Here is what happens when you attempt to do a compression test on a Sp80 with 203psi.

Good thing they interchange with so many ten series excepting of course the right hand starters and the newer 82cc MACs. Ron

PS This is a good picture to show all those macho guys who think decompression valves are just for wimps. I have a 125 that looks just about the same.

it would be dumb to try to start a healthy 82cc mac without decomp pushed in. you will either break the starter as seen above, break the pull rope, or break your fingers. aside from that, there is a good chance of cutting your leg off if you are using the throttle lock set and the decomp not set. i agree buddy, a couple of mine are wore down enough that it can be started with out it but this one is a must.

i can't wait to cut with this saw! david wants to set it up with a 24" bar 3/8 and a 8 tooth sprocket. maybe i should send him a vice to put it in to help starting.

Yep. Decomps save the the 54cc spec starter componants when starting a high compression 82cc engine. I pulled the knot THROUGH the handle on my SP-81 when I forgot to reset the decomp...

The big saws have 77cc starter componants for high compression 103cc and 123cc engines. Using the DSP (if it's there) just makes sense.

Was thinking about bidding on this crusty 890 for parts (hoping to get it for the starting bid), as I could use it to build a good 890 using my 790 engine and spares.........................................until I saw who the seller was. Same #### head who burned BroncoRN on his roached SP-80. Watch out guys...

Avoid him like the plague. Guy is a junk dealer look at his other auctions.

Speaking of cracks in recoil parts, the one I have for my 790 project had two... I stop drilled one and JB welded it. Yes, I sanded the paint off and got down to shiny new mag for a proper bond on both cracks. The other, I did not stop drill since I can't find where it ends due to its awkward location, so I just JB welded the heck out of it.

I'll go get some pics for you folks to look at. This is making me wonder if I should fit a decomp to the 790 cylinder. Question is, how would one go about that?

Alright... here's some pics. One is a minor spoiler to give you another part painted with the paint scheme I decided to go with.

Here's the recoil cover... not perfect paint by any means, but who cares? I'm not trying to win any concourse bull crap. I'll enter that with the nice all original 250 and any other all original saws in good shape that I stumble across... no beautifying needed on a Mac.

Here's one crack... three pics of it from different angles. This one is the one I discovered today while cleaning off the spray bomb gold/silver paint someone else put on years ago.

Here's the other. This one is the first one I found. I stop drilled it and then JB welded it. If I had a decent Miller TIG welding set up and some mag filler rods, I'd try welding magnesium (first practicing on that old white death drain holed 10 series fuel tank left over from the PM850 project)

You're not going to easily be able to add DSP to a 790 cylinder.

Okay. Guess that idea went right out the window.

I have a super evil idea... still plotting... it would fit right in with that six cube 10 series evil plan that you guys are still working some kinks out of... only my idea would be done on an older saw. Not a super old one, but an older one...

Kinks, I wish it was just kinks, I am coming to believe if we want a 6 cube 10 series a bigger cylinder is going to have to be made which will put me out of the running due to lack of funds, plus getting shop time and my work schedule is only getting me about a hour of work a week. There may have been a reason McCulloch stopped at 82cc in the 10 series, for one the cylinders are too small. Any way I will chug along and see if my feeble brain will come up with something that will work.

Idea... pm sent...

Might not be cheap, but boring and relining a cylinder ain't cheap either...
