Drug my first McCulloch home today. Really no clue about the saw but Ive seen them mentioned on here so I grabbed it.

Cylinder looked good, decent compression but has been sitting a very long time. Before I order a carb kit I cheated and shot it with some fuel and she fired. Next pull, no fire at all. Not sure why I would have strong spark then nothing all the sudden so I got some digging to do. I would like to get this up and going, seems like a decent saw.

Pulled coil and cleaned all contacts, and flywheel. Pulled flywheel to make sure the key wasn't sheered, all looks good. Put back together, gaped at .010, left on/off switch disconnected and still no fire.

Dead coil I assume so I will have to hunt one down. May have to go look in the chainsaw bone yard a friend has as I cant drop a bunch of money in this thing right now so decisions decisions. :bang:

You will like that saw. A 10-10S was the first McCulloch I ever owned. I bought it from the original owner back in the early 90's and it is still my go-to firewood saw in that size class. Before you drop the dough on a coil, try a new spark plug. I have seen even good looking plugs cause problems.

Sounds like that saw would take a 10 Series points coil. Those are everywhere and not expensive. If the wire needs replacing, that's not a big deal either.

I thought I posted this earlier today, not sure what happened. For BDM53ENT - the electronic coil is the same for all 10 Series saws and are plentiful. In fact the same coil with a longer lead is used on the 600 Series saws (605, 610, etc.) and there are many of those saws available for parts. The 600 Series have a longer spark plug lead but that can be cut down easily enough. If you find an electronic coil with a bad lead, you can always remove the bad one and install a new one.

I posted some photos earlier in this thread of my SP81E with electronic ignition; that will give you a good idea of what you are looking for, the brown colored one piece unit.

That model doesn't take points. you have one, you should know.

Two, actually.

The mounts are different between the electronic coil and the points style coil.

I know that, too.

BAM! Wow....the abuse on here...lol

Kris, are you joining in while the carcass is fresh? :hmm3grin2orange:

I re-read the original post about 4 times .... the contacts were cleaned, not the points. That was the real source of my confusion.

You got two special edition 10-10s? Or one 10-10s and one 10-10s special?

Ok guys break it up or Ill have to tap a keg for everyone

Mine has the electronic coil, no points. I tired many plugs but she wasnt having it. Thanks for the info on the other saws that have the same coil as I am going digging tomorrow. I didnt see many Macs there when I picked this one up but I will dig to the bottom and hope for the best. Ebayers are wanting $25 and up so If I cant find one it may be awhile before she runs.

No reason to break anything up. I have a lot of respect for everyone on here, these guys helped me many times. The problem comes in from me using my Iphone to respond so I keep my sentences short and it's hard read people's body language anyway when typing.

With all that said, I would still jump at the opportunity to rib Ted any chance I get.

I may also have a spare coil if Ted doesn't

If we can't even bust on each other in jest, I'm out..lol...

I just had to jump on that when I read it..;). I love the chance to have some fun and I knew it was in jest.

While I'm in here... I have an older friend that wants me to make him a pm700 out of two saws. Anything weird about these, I never tore one down. Same deal as the pm850?
