Yep that cotter pin is the vent. Old saw, they did things different back then and it works.

I should have that manual if you need it.

I would appreciate it. I am going to be finishing the "cleaning" phase of my rebuild on this saw. It was really buried in grime! I would like to start putting things back together tomorrow.

4200

I just finished painting and looked at the ads. I saw the little red saw and then the green one behind it. No one passed me on the highway on my way there. 20" Windsor bar with spare chain.

It's in pretty good shape although I haven't gone through it. It hasn't run for a few years. The cool angle pipe is missing from the muffler. Compression is right up there.
The little red saw was a Remington Mighty Mite. I would have bought that too but it was in rough shape. Small enough you could almost put it in a back pack
I would say my day ended on a high note.

That saw is a beauty Roger.

The Poulan gang would be proud today. Felled a 41" post oak, limbed, and blocked with 655, 505, 330 and S25. The only other saws there was an old XL12 and a MS 290. Needless to say the POULANS were the best.:

those oil lines don't go out to easy.... might be the diaphragm ...put oil in it and push the black button on top after you take the clutch cover off.... if it squirts oil your probably ok....i would rebuild your carb and ditto on fuel lines and fuel filter ,,,and airfilter....one turn out on the low and high screw will get you started.... those are great lil saws.... well worth the time....oh and that was a real nice job on the bar......

You are correct about the oil line. Once I got all the grime off of it, it looks to be fine. I didn't realize it used real compression fittings, a nice touch. I believe the oiler is diaphragm based. I couldn't get the manual oiler to work prior to dis-assembly. I am debating if I should disassemble it or not. I think the automatic part works correctly as it appears to move oil out when you spin the crank by hand.

The fuel line cracked when in quite a few places, its will be replaced. The air filter is totally missing.

Anyone ever try making a billet felling spike for one of these? Thinking that might be a fun project once it is running again.

Looks like you were covered for anything coming at you in the woods.

I need a email address to send it to!

You should pull that oiler apart while you have it apart to check it out, lots of time if the manual wont work the auto wont either. Some of it is spelled out in the manual. You need to check that diaphragm, the check valve under the oiler that the oil pickup line hooks to and to make sure the oil pickup line is not cracked as well.

Air filters can still be got for these, from Poulan, Ebay and Oregon makes a replacemet also.

I thought I mentioned the other day that I have a few NOS spikes for these and I could be talked out of one.

If I had seen that ad I'd have raced you to it!!!

Still looking for a real Poulan!

Wow Tim 180 psi you are really going to like that saw. When you get that much compression you can really lean on them. Good buy on the 4200.

Thanks. I didn't check it there because it felt good. My 5200 is at 170 and I was happy with that.
Looking forward to going through it and getting it going. I have to get the red H 77 cc up first.

The best part is..... The air filter is in good shape!

I seemed to have rubbed a Poulan guy the wrong way. I lost my Poulan Craftsman 4200 in a fire. I lost a lifetime of tools and equipment but for some reason that chainsaw was what I missed the most. I bought it new and used it for almost 30 years. Replacing it infected me with cad. By some miracle I found one on a Wisconsin CL for around $100 and the seller agreed to ship it to me. And it came with a great pair of Jonserend gloves. That guy made me the happiest guy on the planet. I am to old and gimpy to use this saw as it could be used, but I love it.
this is what I have left of my first 4200..:msp_scared:

now I have way to many chainsaws......hey but somebody has to give them shelter and love right?

That's way too bad. Glad you found a replacement.

Old and gimpy? I'm old and grumpy. Good pair of geezers.

yes, my old one looked and ran like new....it is just above the mirror on the Kawasaki Ninja....the insurance company gave me $27 for the chainsaw and $1000 for the boat. I hauled 600 pounds of melted aluminum to the scrap yard...it used to be my boat.

I feel the same way about insurance companies as I do about politicians

You think it's bad that the first thing I noticed in this picture was the harbor freight flyer in the top corner?
