Thanks for coming through guys. I'll let you know what I find.

I put a kit in the carb from another saw and the saw ran fine. I cleaned out the troubled carb, removed the welch plugs and cleaned in there as well but it still has the same symptoms.

I will try some other treatments on it before I give up on it. I have a Tillotson HS 147 on a parts saw that I think I can use so I'll give that a try as well.

Thanks for the help.

Tim

I picked up an old cast muffler. Don't know why as it doesn't fit anything I have. Its much smaller than the 306A muffler but the bolt holes match up. Mark, believes its for an old 25D saw. If anyone has need of it, PM me. Its yours.
Bob

Can you send pic? I have been searching forever for a cast muffler for my old Poulan. Kelly 318-348-3252, [email protected]

Is the plug wire on a tranformer for 2 piece ignition on a 4200-5200 Poulan removable/replaceable? One of my saws with this style ignition system has a bite taken out of the plug wire about 1/2 way between the transformer and the plug cap. I see on the 5200 IPL that the plug wire does have a part # (separate from the transformer), so I'm hoping the wire is removable. I gave the plug wire a twist and it didn't "unscrew". Was a bit timid about it, since I wasn't sure if the wire was removable however...

Thanks for any guidance. Also...........Mark I believe you sent me a Service Manual for the 4200-8500 CounterVibe saws.........but I can't find the damn thing. Would you please send me the SM again? Thinking I lost it when I had computer troubles last year...:(

Aaron, the Manual is sent. (again)

I have never tried to replace that high tension wire, but it wont be easy as I know they just dont screw in.

I think I would try to repair the wire if I could, maybe some liquid tape covered with some heat shrink tubing?

I heard it on the internet....so it must be true......bonjour.....actually this site. I have used ATF before as it is relatively harmelss, and has seal conditioners......but tried silicone spray on advice I got there.....It sounds like it may be a "learning moment".

I will get a kit. Thanks

I'm slow. Just got your "Bonjour" comment. Your a French Actor.

I believe its shown as a separate item in the Ipls for the 4200, 5200 and 5400. However if its like the 3400 which I removed the lead from a bad coil, as an experiment, its not easy. Seems to be some high strength glue or resin they use to keep in place. I didn't do a pretty job.

5400? crank shaft thread /clutch question

one of the saws i got (i believe it is a 5400) has the 176 carb on it, i have not measured the bore yet. it has 5/16 bar studs and the smaller chrankshaft clutch shaft threads.

the crank shaft threads where you screw the clutch on are shorter than my other saws (5200, 6900 etc). i cannot find a clutch that will screw on far enough to clear the bar clamp housing even when i install the chain guards, bar the clutch still rubs the housing. what do you guys think is going on with this?

I do not have any experience with either of those saws I am sad to say but, maybe if you post some pictures someone might identify a problem.

Are you sure you don't have an extra washer behind the clutch in the drum or maybe the little spacer washer if you are going from a rim to a spur set up?
Is the clutch drum a Poulan drum or an aftermarket drum?

Fossil, you have a very good point, i read the manual and the service bulletin on changing from rim to a spur etc. it says to switch the washers, small black washer goes towards saw and larger washer goes after clutch cover. my question is, do some of the clutch covers have a built in washer? i have several and one looks to have the washer built into it. I did however confirn the 5400.

All of mine, spur or rim look lke they have a built in washer. Is your set up a rim or spur?

I'll go down and pull both off and take some pics. I know there is not much space between the clutch cover and the clutch.

Here's the rim set up. The thicknesses were taken with a vernier

The spur setup

There's obviously some wear on the washer that goes behind the spur and first in the drum on the rim setup. (same PN)
