Good Morning All:
My 5200 has no spark after a long rest. I have replaced the transformer with a NOS piece but still no spark.
I have traced the wires, all seem good, dosconnected the on/off switch still no go. Is the only other piece left to replace the ignition module?
Any other options I am missing?? All help is appreciated. Frank

If my memory serves me doesn't the 4200 and 5200 have a ground wire connected to the side of the top handle? Did you check that? If that's okay I think you're looking that the ignotion module.
Bob

I think generally we can forget about checking modules with an ohmmeter. I looked at a schematic of one and to ohm it out would be a waste of time because you can't ohm out all the circuitry.
You can easily check a coil though..

Hello Frank, was the saw running when you put it away years ago? have you tried just replacing the spark plug? do you have another saw you can swap parts around to eliminate transformer/coil etc? yes there is a ground wire on the bar clamp side of the handle bar. please also check your coil gap and make sure the contacts are clean.

good luck.

Yes, the saw was running fine. It sat for about 14 months.

I have been removing the plug and checking with a spark checker thingie (Technical term there) and I have checked other saws just to make sure it checker was indicating spark.

I have removed the flywheel looked behind it and reset the coil gap using the business card method. Also cleaned out all the junk in there. I will recheck the ground wire this afternoon. Thank you for all your tips!! Frank

so have you taken an ohmeter after the coil, points, and condenser?

Don't forget to check the spark plug wire itself. They do fail or loose contact at the coil.

I don't know if they all do, but this one has electronic ignition. Frank

loosen and re tighten the nut/bolts on the ground wires when you check them. there may be some light surface rust/flash rust from sitting for so long (condensation etc)

put a new plug in it and see if you are getting fuel to the plug as well.

That ground wire on the side is mainly to ground the chassis to the handle so the switch will work.

Odd it went bad setting, did you make sure the flywheel magnets are clean and not rusty? Other then that remove the wireing to make sure there are no bare spots under the hold downs.

Ok, I'm at work, but just to let you guys know, the Poulan hats just came in.

Thing is there was a mix up. Someone wanted non mesh back hats so I ordered them. Told them I wanted a doz just like the others but in a winter cap. Well what I got was sock hats. LOL. There sure nice ones though, got the same logo on them as the others. I'm not dealing with telling them about that after the deal they give me and will keep them, most of us wear sock hats sometime anyway.

I'll post up some picture tonight.

Agree.Plus that if the ground wire is not conected and try to touch the saw while running, you will feel something unpleasant to your fingers, not big deal but is true.

Mark, if you have an extra hat, please let me know....I always need something to cover my gray hair. Thank you.
