Tore my new to me PP380 apart and found a long crack in the flywheel side case half. Thinking of using JB Weld to fix but wonder what other cases might fit. I split case to access the crack and hopefully fix it unless someone has a better idea.

Bob, My 380 had a small crack near the bar studs. I replaced it with a 330 case. Worked like a charm. I never tried to repair it.

Gregg,

I want to get a new bar for the s25cva I recently got and Gregg showed me an example of the one I need on ebay, thanks Gregg! But my question is, right now it has a 16" b/c on it that is 3/8 050 and the chain is low profile. Can I use a non low profile chain with the sprocket that is currently on the saw?

That Mac cuts good, hard to stall in a cut but weighs like two concrete blocks. I have a Echo that's light and so is my 2800. But want both power and light weight. That 4000 sounds like what I may go for next. If its like the 2800, it will be easy to strip down for a restore.

I am planning a little showdown with some 4'ish cube saws when the weather changes and I get them all running as they should. A 4000, sp60, sl-11, p41, 036...etc. I still have to modify the muffler on the 4000 as it came with a non-ported 3400 set-up from the factory. It will be nice to get some video and measure some times in a big Larch.

I just wrapped up a PP335 and am anxious to see what it can do as well up against a squished low hours 3400. The 335 idles and accelerates impressively with the dual port muffler and 16" bar. It feels like it will rip well enough.

Gregg,
Yea Gregg, think I'll look for a 330 parts saw. In the meantime I JBWelded the case last night. Will see how it holds up till I get a replacement case.

Maybe I've worked on so many but the 4000 I find easier to work on then the 2800 or 3000 saws.

Nate, I'll defer to someone with more experience with the S25 series saws. Common sense would make one think if they both were 3/8" pitch chain, it would work. I have never tried it. I always used LP chain on them. Even if the full size 3/8" chain works, you will probably need to have a chain made for it. The drive link count is probably different than what most pre-made loops are. Just my GUESS.

Gregg,

I really want a 4000 as my next saw. Might even sell a saw I currently have to get some funds for one. Or trade somebody here that might have an extra one:)

I'm with you. I have the one 3700 (my Skil 1621 could be larger, will check later today) and 4 3400 types.

Really want to come across a 4000.

Does anyone know:

Did they have any durability issues compared to the smaller displacement 3400/3700? Thinner cylinder ... Just curious

I agree with statement 100% Bob. The 3400/3700/4000 series of saws are very easy to work on. The only tricky thing on them might be the piston pin is pressed in, as opposed to using a cir-clip used on a lot of saws. Not a problem with the proper tool, or you can make one. It is very easy to damage something, bend the connecting rod etc. if just trying to drive them out.

Bob, I will check next time I go out to the shop, extreme cold and crappy here now.. :cold: You can have my old 380 case if you want it. I think you said yours was cracked on flywheel side. Mine was opposite side. Maybe you can use a case half from each, since you already split yours.

None whatsoever! That I'm aware of. I have often wondered why they stopped at 64cc 3.9cu in. with these though.
Why not 65cc and 4.0 cu. in. LOL;)

Gregg,

I'm the other way around I prefer to work and own 285-380 2800-3750 saws. I dont like working on or owning the 3400-4000 ones.
I was spoiled with a 4000 saw first of that series so I never even look at the others now.
Guess it is just where your  heart is.

Thats why we have choices in life. To each their own.

Poulan was owned by E-Lux and the decision was made for them.

Just like Partner Jonsereds Roper Husky. Then Husky splits and buys Redmax . Buy them for their ahead of the game technology and then drown them.

Poulan nested under Husky now. So you know they aint going to allow any big saws now days.

Maybe that is why I like my 385xp so well. Its part of the "family" so to speak. Even if it is by marriage. :D Dang in-laws.

Gregg,

Oh yeah.......I'm experienced with these saws Gregg. When me and Glenda first got married, I cut all my firewood with one.

I was like a hog in slop when I got an well used 028.
