This sounds like what the guy used for Pogo. I never knew this stuff existed. Definitely something to keep handy for the occasional buggered up thread.

There are a whole pile of different sizes. Just for quick reference 1/64" is 0.015625" or 0.396875 mm.

You may be on to it. I happened to stop by there this afternoon to ask about it and he called it a millimeter "thread file" (vs. SAE) and said it was a toothed tool that had graduated sized teeth from one end to the other in various degrees of size (in millimeters) but was still wrapped around the threads somehow for its abrasive effect as opposed to other styles of straight thread files. Was too busy to dig it out for me to see it, but did say it was a weird animal that probably wouldn't just pop up on a Google search. You may have found it.

This may be a stupid question, I tried doing some research first. But on the 4200-8500 model saws, is the S clip that the bar goes over on the studs necessary or can you run them
with out it? What is it's purpose?

Yes, all them older Poulans, with the smaller 5/16" studs use the S-clip when using bars like a Windsor Speed Tip with the larger 3/8" slot. The Oregon bars like the D176 are already sized to fit the smaller studs. I use quite a few of the Windsor bars, and only had a few of them clips, so started making them when I need one. There must be millions of them clips out there, but ya don't often see them for sale.

Gregg,

Thanks Gregg. I just wasn't sure because the 5400 that I was working on for my father in law had an S clip on it but it needed a bar still so I put that 20" Oregon bar on it but it wouldn't go over the
S clip. I took the S clip off and it worked just fine. Makes sense now, thanks fellas!

Nate,

The "S"clips are getting hard to find. If you pick up a 3/8" OD extension spring (very common) at the hardware store and cut sections out of it a little narrower than the bar and slip those on they work perfectly. Just bend one end of the last loop in a tiny bit so they don't fall off when you remove the bar.
The 5200, 3400 - 4000 and lots of early Homelites. had 5/16" bar studs. A lot of the Windsor bars sold with the Poulans used to come with that "S" clip.

Cool, thanks for the info. I have the S clip, the bar I was putting on just didn't fit over it so I wondered what it was for:)

I have some S-clips for the XL-12 and Super Ez Homelite saws. I don't know if the are the right length to fit any Poulan stud set-up.
chainsawlady

The spacing on the bar 5/16" bar studs center to center for the Poulan 306, 4200, 5200, 3400, 3700, 3800 and 4000 is 1-1/4"

My Super XL's are at 1-1/4" as well. I don't have an XL-12 to check.

I think the EZ models have a smaller spacing.

Hope that helps J.

There seems to be Poulan guys looking for them.

Here are a couple examples of S-Clips and the spring type Tim is talking about. Mark gave me some of these coiled spring type once. Have no clue where he found them. If I did know, I have forgotten.

The one on the left is an original S-Clip, The other 2 are some I made out of the metal strips that hold the rubber in your windshield wipers. :D They aren't formed quite as nice, but work well.
