Hey mark,

never thought of that... i had no idea the 'oil tank' cover, thing was so easily removed...

take a peek at the pic again... ABSOOLUTELY bigger than 3/8ths...

when i measured the stud, it was BEFORE the larger portion threaded in the tank....

homelite bars???? yeah, those are easy to find too :dizzy:

lol

old big Poulans

If I didn't already have a useable 4200 & a 5400, I would be looking for
a big saw, have the need occasionally on big trees.

4000 woes...

I'm having some trouble with my 4000. I rebuilt the carb, new lines, I also removed the base gasket and used a copper silicone permex. I adjusted the metering lever already. I took it out today and got it to run at WOT for about 30 seconds. It would die at idle then no restart. I wouldn't be posting help if I didn't need it. I haven't checked for consistent spark yet, but I have it at the start. I will check tomm. The carb was clean, I always clean them good wheni rebuild too. I have a spare one off a 3400 I might rebuild and put on. Just frustrating because of all my saw I wanted this one the most and I want to use it!!

Joe,

Put a known good carb on it and go from there.
You won't eliminate any possibilities with an untested carb.
Try a new plug too. They are cheap.
You'll get a handle on it, this ain't your first rodeo!

Haha thanks Mike. I feel like an amature postin in the first place but, I also know where to get the expertise. Ill swap my 3.7's carb and see what happens.

Did you double check the line for a kink? I had one once that had a new line in it but previous owner put cover down against the line, blocking it.

Joe, A year or so ago, I was working on a 4000, the one I ended up painting Ford tractor blue & grey.:dizzy: I was having problems similar to yours.
I swapped carbs, tried tearing the carb apart and rechecking what I previosly did. Couldn't figure it out. As a last desperate stab, I changed the fuel filter.
I didn't replace it when I put it together, it looke like a new one to me..LOL
Well, I put a New one in, and it solved my problem.:dizzy: Never over look the the obvious little things, or take something for granted.

Gregg,

Went to the flea market again today, kinda a bad day but did manage to pick up three Poulan built saws, a XXV counter vibe, a Poulan 2000 and a Craftsman version of the 2000. I also bought a running Homelite XL12 but that's for another thread. I actually bought the 2000s for parts but they don't look too bad when they're cleaned up. Very reasonable after a little haggling, $35 for all. Glad I bought some extra fuel line last week, the 2000s always need it.

4000 happy

Well the saw runs! This one has bothered me for months. I even droped it off at the saw shop to see if my saw guy could figure it out. He never got a chance to look at it so I grabbed it the other day, and then posted. Sooo I brought my 3.7 on the bench. I swapped carbs. Then I noticed the 4000's vent was kinked, I fixed that then I looked up the spark gap in my manual. Poulan calls for.025 for a CJ8. Mine was set to about .035 so I set that. I then put fresh mix in. The saw fired right up. Revved idled and re-starts no problem, 5 seconds of 30 min. I then bolted the 4000's carb on the 3.7. and it ran great too! I have to cut with both to be sure but all seems well. Thanks to Mike, Mark, Gregg and JR. reps sent. can someone send some to mike mark and Gregg? met my limit i guess!
Also these saws HAVE to be the easiest to work on! Never a problem.

Lets try this again..... Thought I had posted pictures of the 3300 I got from Scooterbum last month but must not have hit the "submit" button. It came to me not running with only 4" of bar hidden under the clutch cover. It appears the bar had been broken off and the saw ditched after that.

Looked hard for an 18" bar and all I could find locally was a 20" job. Here it is:

As you can see, the handle got tweaked a bit which will not allow the air filter cover to go on straight.

I see you lurking down there Nik!!!
just catching up. Glad Joe got the 4000 going. I was gonna say plug. The day before Gregg's GTG Marko's saw gave me fits for hours. Andre came over and even he couldn't get the carb set right. After he messed with it for a while, he asked me if it was a new plug. I said no it was one out of my toolbox that looked pretty good. I swapped it out for a known one. Problem solved...

Thanks Nik. It could have been part of the problem. I reset the gap along with the swapped carb and vent.

I got the help here! I should have asked sooner. I just bought my first house and it is loaded with huge bushes and some trees. I cant wait to introduce the 3.7 and 4000 to them:chainsaw:
Thanks again.
The Poulan guys are the best:cheers:

Man sometimes the obvious things are the culprit. I likely would never have looked at the tank vent.
