I got a pm from a member here that has some dealings with a Chinese manufacturer of big bore kits, He said the guy's keen on doing business. That got the old wheels a turnin'. The first thing I though was could he reproduce big old poulan p/c? Would there be enough interest? I mean how many of these big old saws are out there? You usually see a 4200 on ebay once every month or two....what do you guys think?

Not only the 85cc P/C, but think of the numbers of 245 saws that are out there. And of course all the other comman old Poulans, thats becomming hard to find good parts for. There has been a number of times I have noticed in someones sig, or whatever, that they have a old Poulan just sitting, waiting for a P/C. Even a 4000 P/C would be a good seller. But like most things, price would be a BIG factor.

Gregg,

Ok, lets see.. Any ya'll fellers that run the Poo-Lans got any parts saw out in the old tobacky barn? Would be forever beholden to ya.:D

Gregg,

LOL!!!

I reckon that rite there was purty good for a fellers first effort!
Good enough that I slipped off to the terbacker barn and poked around a mite.

Reckon this is what you're huntin'

Looks like it had a close encounter with a maverick chain a time or two but I believe it will do ya!

Mike

While we're on the subject of mini saws, I got my Craftsman 2.0 out today and tried cutting some wood with it. I'll admit it has too big of a bar for this size saw but the chain was sharp, and it seemed a lot slower than my 2.1 Poulans and Craftsman(s). I have another 2.0 I'll try later that has the correct bar and chain on it to see if it's any better. I guess it's possible that the compression might also be down a little on this saw. Anybody got an opinion of the 2.0 vs. the 2.1?

Yes sir, just make em all 85cc clys though, for the big ones and all 65cc for the others.

I read your post and that sorta got the wheels to turning. To keep cost down (and volume up) I would limit to two or 3 cylinders, hear me out on this one. Instead of manufacturing the 3.4, 3.7, and 4.0 cylinder for that series just settle on the 4000 cyl. Do the same thing with the 4200, 4900, 5200, 7700, and 8500 series saw and just make the 85cc version. I'm not sure if the 245 and 306 interchange, maybe Mark can answer that one.

After making this post I saw where Mark made basically the same while I was typing. Sorry for the double post.

Anyone have a source for rings? Have my Dayton apart and as such I may as well install new ones , if they are available.
Bob

Bob, I got some from Calvin the last time I got any, but I think I got the last ones he had. I have a set of rings for a Sthil 038MagII (I think thats what they are) here that I was going to file down to fit but then ran across the right ones.

WHO did you say talks funny?????LOL

I thought Steve sounded perfectly normal!!!

Mike

No you both talk funny! :hmm3grin2orange:

Wanted to post a few pics of the Ugly Beast I been workin on. I guess it could be a beauty too, depending on your point of view.
Its been going fairly well, was pretty rough, but had a great P/C, that was a BIG plus.
I have hit a snag though. The oiler line and pickup were rattling around in the tank. So I pulled the oiler, following the service manual procedure, and following Marks advice to replace the o-ring in there also.

The adjuster screw would turn in either direction without stopping. Something was for sure not right. Well, I broke the housing after struggling with it..(Dammit) Even after I fad it apart, there was no way to get the adj. screw to engage, so its probably good I broke it. So the search, begging, lol begins for another oiler. I think the 5200/4200 use the same part, so that might make the search easier.

There is still a number of small things that need taking care of, fixed, or whatever. But hopefully she will live again.

Gregg,

Greg, you got it down that far you might as well do the crank seals while your at it. I would hate to see one burnt up over $10. Hell you got the oiler off, all you need to do on the other side is pull the flywheel and your right there!

Did you say you were going to ring it too? Both the rings, seals and gaskets you can still order from Poulan. I also have the aftermarket seal #'s in the shop for them as well.

That saw looks like it will be a good runner when your done!

I see Mike has a oiler, otherwise I was going to pull one off of one of these project saws to get you going at least.

Good idea, and the smart thing to do. I had a set of rings that were suppose to fit the 85cc Poulans but they were the wrong ones. I allready had it apart, debated seals etc. also. I have the seals and gaskets. It appears to be in good shape. I was gonna wait untill some future tear down to replace that stuff and do a proper paint job on it.

But, if they are easy enough to do, I just might try replacing the seals now, before I run it. The fella that I bought this from, said the saw had 160 lb. compression. Sounds like it should be good to go. I did rebuild the carb, new fuel line, filter.

Gregg,

Hey guys I want to take a moment and thank Steve(67 mustang) for all the help the other day. It was great to watch a Poulan pro in action. The way you tore into that monster and fixed it was amazing, even if you had to do the recoil 3 times.

Joe

Guess you thought I needed the practice doing the recoil since LP gave me that rotten starter rope. You didn't tell these guys you scored a 245A with a good P&C for $5. It will probably turn into a good runner. There was a time when he would have been on the phone asking if I wanted to buy it but those times have passed!

Wanted to post a few pics of the Ugly Beast I been workin on.

Gregg,

Ugly's in the eye of the beholder. Looks good to me. Looks like since you're going to get that oiler sooner than you thought I better get that muffler in the mail.

did all 85cc Poulans share the same p/c?

The 8500 has a different piston than the 5200 & 5400. The cylinders are the same.

BTW, I'm often lurking around here even if I don't chime in. Gotta bunch of projects on my bench. Been waiting for it to cool off. Ol' Possum has ac in his shop now so that's reason enough to go down and rewind a starter for him and get a free lunch at Rick's in Denton.

I gotcha, the seals are just cheap insurance but might not be needed. You could do a vac test on it and go from there.

After buying that slightly scored Craftsman 5.2 which was caused by a seal that popped out, maybe I'm just gun shy.

Glad to see you pop in there Steve, don't be a stranger.

Hell why didnt you tell me you guys were rewinding Poulan starters, I might have come down to help if I knew there was a free lunch involved. :hmm3grin2orange:
