Mark, you drank beer and I got toasted? The 'net is a wonderfull thing.
When I get home, I'll toast you with a shot of Beam. That would be, what 0830 your time?

One of the little guys works just fine, the other needs the fuel system go through. dang if they aren't easy to work on. I need a set of dogs, I'm giving one to my Bro, he has only partial use of his left arm, dogs will help keep it in the wood.

I'm happy to own one of the most underrated chainsaw brands on earth. If you can get someone to tinker with one and cut with one, they will go screamin' green.

I don't know about the west coast but they were not underrated around here in the midwest they were preferred.

At least in the 70's- late 80'-early 90's.

I don't remember seeing Poulans, either in the woods or backyards. I did work with a couple oddballs that ran Pioneers though.
I'm hoping for a good high water year to put a bunch of wood on the beaches, it's been years since that has happened.

Wow... beautiful...absolutely beautiful...and the wood looks good also!

I love my 3600...heck I love all my saws...but I will tell you one thing the 3600 keeps up with my 455 and all of my buddies own farm bosses, I love to pull out the 3600 now and let it rip...it use to bug me when they bad mouthed her...but it is funny how a few days of watching her rip has silenced the group!

But boy oh boy...I think I need a 4000 now...yikes they are nice looking saws!

Thanks Colesy, The 4000 is my favorite all around saw. They have enough power, simple, easy as heck to work on, will handle a variety of bar sizes, and just plain good looking saws. :)

The Poulan that I get the most kick out of running though, is the 5200:rock:
They will flat out pull like an old Lima Berkshire locomotive in big wood!
Heck, I'll use mine once in a while, even if the wood is not huge, just so I can hear it run..LOL

Being in Canada, you will have to look out for orange Poulans. I think a lot of them were orange & black, and usually had chain brakes, on the Poulans sold in Canada.
Gregg,

2900?

Ok fellas..need some help here. Visiting dad and looked on Craigslist for his area. found a 2900. Is this saw in the same group as the 4000/5400 or was it made later...looked on Acers site and didnt see it there.

guy still has it might go take a look on the way home.

You need to know the time frame it was manufactured so you can select the proper company name. You will find it under POULAN (ELECTROLUX) as the 4th item down. 46 cc's of raw power......

My question comes to what models do we need to stay away from? Just wondering what to stay away from.. The pictures seem to look like its better made than the current ones.

It's an alright saw, most came with a .325 20" bar, not the most powerful and the 20" chain kinda bogs them. I did a muffler mod and tuned the carb on one, it was better but but an older 3400 will kill it. An 18 or a 16" bar would be better.

Another 4000...and another great pile:jawdrop:

I hope the other members realize that these saws are not a POS!!

On a side note guys...is a decent 4000 hard to find ? I am in Ontario

Oh and wish me luck...my first project saw officially starts tomorrow...The "Wild Thing" project.

Well the Wild Thing was easy to fix...I just loosened the allen screw in the center of the starting pulley...the cord sprung around tight...I put it back together...threw fresh fuel mix into it and Bob's your uncle...it fired right up:clap:...for free I am quite happy! I am going to throw a new bar and chain on it ... I am also going to try the muffler mod for it...any links to a Wild Thing Muf Mod?

I think I would call it a little better then just alright. There built with Swedish cranks, chrome bores etc.

That said your correct that they need a muffler mod badly and yes a 20" bar is much on it, just like it would be on most any 46cc saw.

245A tear down

I started on my free 245A tonight. It was locked up tight, but looking at rings through the ex. port the piston looked pretty good. I took it all down and found good, bad and ugly! The flywheel is toast, 5 fins broken off, which broke from the next problem. The SS ign was loose and the coil rubbed on the fins finally breaking them also one of the mounts is broken. The coil looks shot too, which made me mad as SS igns for these saws are not that easy to come by. The fan cover is pretty banged up, but the clutch cover is good. The fuel tank is very oxidized as is the reed cage, water got in this saw at some point. I had no hop for the P&C. And I never had such a hard time pulling a cylinder in my life! But I was surprised, the cylinder has no scoring, just a glaze that broke off with my finger, underneath was a very smooth cyl wall. The piston looks good too, no grooves, rings are free. So i will be polishing them both with some emory cloth and looking for a new chasis to bolt them too. pardon my out of focus pics

Good score Joe!! those top ends are hard to find in good shape...

I scored 2 306a's last weekend for cheap $...BOTH recoils are PERFECT and one clutch cover (and decal is almost perfect!)

One was PHO, the other had a 20" roller nose! thought that was cool!!

OH!! what size fuel line for the 306's?????

So Joe, what are your plans now? I might have some things to help you put that thing back together but I think you need to get it the rest of the way apart and inspect that crank and rod very close if it had water in it.

Honestly if the crank and rod are shot, you maybe ahead to just save that P/C for another saw.

For the line in the carb box, you will need a 3/16ID x 5/16OD while the line in the tank needs to be 1/8ID x 3/16OD but I sometimes use .117ID x .211OD as it's a little thicker.

You will have to fight to get that tank line on the fuel line fitting and the fuel filter. Any bigger line won't be flexable enough to let the filter stay in the fuel.

Was the 306 with the roller nose a 306SA?

I found this when I got home yesterday. A thanks goes out to Walt41 for hooking me up with it. I mainly got it just because I have never personally seen one myself and info on them are hard to find.

I'll check it out closer when I get some time, pull it down for a cleanup and check over.

It appears to be a 4cube 361 style saw that originally came power sharp equipped but sadly those parts are missing.

At this point I think that the 401 was just a power sharp version of the 400? I'm still looking for info on it such as production dates etc.

I was hoping it would be a version of the 400A which was a auto oiler.

Anyway it has a cool Poulan branded roller nose bar on it.

What do I win Mark? :) I guessed a 400. Nice looking old rare beast for sure.
There was a 23" NOS Poulan bar on the bay recently that would compliment or finish off an old saw. I'm sure you seen that.:)

Oh, By the way, I got to run Mike's Craftsman 5.2/30 yesterday down at Nik's place. That saw impressed alot of folks. :D

Gregg,

Gregg, I'm so sorry, but there are no prizes for guessing wrong. You were close though.

Yes, Mikes 5.2 is a very nice one for sure. He's lucky I already had one if you know what I mean. LOL

I think I bid on that bar you speak of, but forgot to recheck on it.

Mike metioned about the deal yesterday, I wish I could have made it, but I had to work and will probaly be working the rest of Saturdays till near Christmas.

306 was a 'A' model... no decomp (IIRC the differences...)

is the .117x.211 the 3/32X 3/16??

maybe just too lazy to think...lol

Nice find on the 401 Mark. The 401 that I had did'nt have a PS system on it and the clutch cover that was on it looked to be the original with the color and wear matching the rest of the saw perfectly.
