245A: Death by water

Not quite as bad as my XL 12 was, but destructive just as well. I took your advice Mark abouth\ removing the clutch. Pipe wrench wouldnt bite so i put it in the vise, that worked. I took off the oiler assembly and I must say that is a well built oiler. I could see the 2 screws that held the flywheel side of the crank in but they were so badly oxidized the screwdriver just stripped the heads. I wound up getting the piston and rod out be removing the rod bolts. The needle bearing on the crank were toast, rusted up. The bearing on the flywheel side too was siezed by rust. Not too often you come across a parts saw where only the P/C are salvageable, but thats the case here.

Glad ya met with success, and your right, thats a mess! I had a 3400 parts saw one time like that. Corrosion of the magnesium was unbelievable from being wet.
If ya need some usable part ya don't have, just let me know, and I'll see if I have a good one.:)
Gregg,

Hey Guido you can use corn cobs for them little saws gas cap.
When they get all soaked up you can smoke um too. It's a blast.

Gregg,

Thanks Gregg. My plan is to find a solid 245A with a blown P/C and use the top end off this saw. The recoil cover is broken, the fuel tank is coroded and the ign system destroyed. The carb is good as is the clutch cove and oiler. I got this saw thrown in for free with 2 SXLAO's so I'm happy with what I got. The salvagable top end is a nice bonus.

Saw a parts saw on Ebay , JOe. Not sure if it has what you need though.

Hey Bob! I got that 3000 out finally the other day, and what a little runner it is! Man it rips.

I would run it against the 5100s that I got from Mike but I would have to keep the results to myself. It would stirr too much stuff if it would hang with it. (it maynot be far behind)

She runs good, you got it tuned in really well.

Joe, don't sweat it, your still way, way ahead if you only came out with a clutch cover! I still got this set of Stihl 038 mag rings here I was going to file fit to a 245 if you need them.

Do not know if any of the guys on here purchased the flywheel i had in the obsolete poulan catalog for the breaker pt ignition on the S25da saw but if any of you are the one who purchased it today i thank you much cause its all ready sent out

I may have it im trying to think what model you have there i know it says craftsman but poulan made craftsman at that cause i can tell its a poulan cause of the air filter cover

i'm preety sure it's the poulan s25da.
thanks

Yes sir it is indeed a S25DA and no you do not need a new gas cap. You do need to replace the rubber duckbill check valve that is missing from it.

I don't remember the part # for it with out looking it up but Calvin has some and there easy to replace. I use the Homelite valves alot myself but you have to modify the center hole in the retainer some for those to fit.

I posted pictures here in this thread sometime ago how to do it, but I should have started a new thread on it. I will the next time I do one.

You will see the little metal retainer in the cap and can use a small pick to remove it. I use a gutted Bic stick pen as a driver to reinstall it.

i do have a few of those homelite duckbill checkvalves lying around. i bought a few extra last time i needed one. i will give it a try. thanks mark
the answer might be obvious when i look at it, which direction will i install it?duckbill up or down?
thanks kevin

Kevin,

The duckbill will go toward the fuel.
