Just going to throw some pis of my projects up to you guys, I know how you like pics.

Someone requested them too.

The 245 is running now, just needs some minor stuff before I put it to wood. The 361 will run too, just put new fuel lines on it, gotta clean the gas tank out and reassemble.

The 306 is a runner.

Poulan 306A

Howdy, I just had a really nice 306A given to me from a friend at church. He tells me he was cutting a tree when it died. Looked in the tank and says the fuel line was busted. Replaced the fuel line and it never cranked again after that. He did a compression test and it's got around 75psi. I figured it leaned out with the busted fuel line. Going to pull the muffler and see what I can see through the exhaust port. I found a piston and cylinder on eBay, but the cylinder is listed for a 361, the piston is a Piston 2576 , Rings 2577. Don't think that cylinder will work on the 306A.
Where is the best place to buy a piston and parts to put this back together with? I have seen where this is a 59cc saw. Are they powerful saws and is this saw worth putting a piston in? The saw is in great condition with a super nice B&C. I'll get a pic up soon.
Thanks.

May want to put this up on the Swap Meet thread and/or the Classifieds under Saws as a WTB. Someone on the forum may have something to swap or sell. Welcome to the forum!

Mark will correct me if I am wrong, but I am reasonably confident the 361 and 306 have interchangeable P/C.

Ok, I'll have to tell you then. LOL

The 306 and 361 do share pistons and rings, but the cylinders will not interchange.

To the previous poster, parts can come and go on ebay, you just have to keep a watch out. I just picked up a nice used 306 cylinder myself along with a nice coil for like $20.

Sounds like you got no money in the saw so you can afford to spend a couple dollars on it. '

Just pay attention to the cyl you have as some were a little bit differnent. Some had a threaded boss behind the exhaust port for the screw on the tin muffler to fasten to.

If yours has the older cast muffler, any of the cyls will work but you may have to grind the threaded boss down on the later cyl to clear it.

Chris the 361 is old saw so it don't look to bad at all. The 306 looks great but somenone needs horsewhipped for what they did to that 245A. :hmm3grin2orange:

Probably a good runner though. LOL

That 306 runs great too! That saw sold me on green saws, in and of itself.

The orange 245 should be no problem, being that it was a hack job the orange paint will peel right off. Just gotta put that flywheel on (Thank you Mark) get some longer screws for the recoil, fix that fuel tank gasket and we'll be in business. Should be back to green after a couple of days of 40" hardwood I'm going to be getting, wish I had a bigger bar for it.

Looks like I'm gonna have my own muscle saw 70cc class showdown!

245 vs PM700.

The 361 is dirty on the outside, but underneath the recoil cover it's rather clean.
The reeds look like they just came out of a package. Just about have to pull that whole saw down for fuel line replacement, but what fun are they if you don't have to do anything to them?

Awesome!

I love this place. Who'd a thunk we could come around and BS about chainsaws? I'm with you Mark, I don't have a dime in it, and I b'lieve a piston and rings will bring it back ta life, but this thing is going to beat the heck out my boy trying to sling it around like a Husky 36. Haha.
Are these 306As powerful 60cc saws? Is there something I need to do while I'm in there replacing the slug?
We're in the middle of stacking firewood and unloading a truck load of elm or I'd snap a pic of it. Clean little saw. Thanks for the replies.

Im glad you posted some pics of your latest work Chris. That 245 might be ugly as hell but it can make up for it in the wood. The more I look at that 361, the more I like it, but it would still be in the corner if I still had it. If you have a way, try and make some videos.

I've got some big wood coming this week, I believe.

Gonna have to set the camera up and test these saws out

Nothing out of the ordinary on the 306A, petty straight forward. Just check it over well to make sure you know the cause of the original meltdown. Crank seals don't cause alot of problems on them but you never know on saws this old.

Uh oh Mitch, is that your handie work on that 245's paint job?:mad-tongue:

Between the 245 and 700 you can cut up alot of wood in a day!

You were very quick to question the 180# reading on my 4200. You called my gage a P.O.S. O.K. that is fair, perhaps it is. I will have it tested in our instrument shop even though it closely matched a much more expensive gage. Other than shaving .060 off the mating surfaces of the cases and re boring the main bearing seats I would have to say perhaps this guys gage is a P.O.S. also. I find it strange that you did not mention it as possibility. You were very quick to point out the fact that mine was/is a P.O.S.

You calling me out? Are you sure you want to do that?

I didn't question Mitch and his gage because I know that he knows these saw engines. Of course I also know he modifies stuff so the kind of compression he's showing me on that saw does not surprise me any at all. Mitch also confided in me privatly about how he reached those compression numbers.

My Poulan Pro 475's puts out 190lbs but then again there modified also. Don't believe me? Ask Mitch he owns one of them now.

Also from experiance with lots of 4200's and 5200's that were stock, some with new pistons and rings I never seen one put out what yours is showing so forgive me if I'm skeptical of your findings.

You also come on here spewing goofy junk like boring main bearing seats, WTF does that mean? You really think you can offset the crank brg bores in a saw case easily? Yet I'm supposed to take you seriously?

Yes the harbor freight compression testers are a POS, mine and yours.

No go back to your normal sensless babbling.
