I got the 4400 finished today and started a new thread on it. http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/169037.htm

Found a great looking P/C but it failed a vac test badly. It did hold somewhat on a pressure test.

Some grease on the PTO side seal showed the vac leak in a hurry.

It runs great now.

Mark.
What few saw engines I've gotten into, I have expected to find double lip crank seals but have only found single lip. I don't see how they could hold much vacume to begin with.

Kind of disturbing.
Carl.

No not at all. Single lip seals are fine most of the time and most that you see that look like double are probably a single lip with a wiper.

These single lip seals lasted 30 years.

Thought you guys might want to see some fuel line pictures of it.

I used the last fitting that I had from Bob, and this newer style tank had the step closer to the fuel line hole then the older style tanks.

I had to use a flat ended burr in a dremal to make enough space to put the new fitting in it.

Not a big deal.

Like any old saw I get I tore it down for a good cleaning and a close inspection. This one was a challange to get cleaned up, it was a mess.

Great job, as usual Mark. I took particular notice of the foam stuffed down at the bottom, to block off dust/chips. I have never seen just how that was suppose to be in there. IPL's just show a foam piece. On my 5200, I just cut a piece of foam and tucked it down there. I guess it will suffice. :msp_thumbsup:

Gregg,

Thany you.

I got the chance to work on some saws tonight. The last several weeks have been kind of rough. I had back surgery and then two weeks ago my 17 year old nephew was killed in a accident on his way home from school. The weekend after his funeral we had to take my 7 year old son to the hospital and he had to stay for three days. Last Friday we went to my nephew's high schools first game to support them as he was the captain of the team. He had played ball since he was 5. So this week things slowed down and the family doing better I got the chance tonight to work on some saws. As I sat there trying to get my mind off of things a 1800 I had sitting there caught my eye. I realized then that working on saws can be good for you especially the green ones. At least it helps me relax. Now if I was working on one of them white and orange ones that might be different. I will say the Lord has given us strength and I thank him for giving me something to work on.

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. I do believe the Lord allows things to make us stronger. And as hard as it is losing someone that close good things can and have came of it. Twelve kids from his school have come to know the Lord threw this time. As soon as my back heals more I got a 306 that needs some work and a 3700 until then I have another 1800 and a 25 DA waiting they are a little lighter and easy er on the back.

Gregg,

Greg, I done the same with the foam. Thats all that was there from the factory. If you have the tank off you can really do a nice job with the foam and glue it in place.

I wondered how you got around that. Do you think the fitting will seat properly and seal the tank?

Yes they fit and seat fine. Just for insurance I wrap the threads with teflon tape.

That was my last fitting, so are you going to be able to make some as we discussed? As you see, 3/16 on one side and 1/8 on the other.

This is the best setup on these that I have found.

making it shouldn't be an issue. I've not been able to locate 5/16" aluminum hex from our regular suppliers. I may just have to make them from round stock and then flat them like the other guy did.

Let me check on something Nik.
I'm not sure on the size but the driveshaft out of some of the weed trimmers is aluminun hex stock.
I know a guy that junks them out and he might have one or two laying around that I can pick up for the price of the scrap aluminum........or a six pack of really cheap beer!!!

In the end, there only worth what you think there worth. Condition means everything on these. P/C's are hard to come by. So make sure of the conditon before deciding on prices.

As you know, the 245A is one of my favorites.

Good deal! Don't know why it made a difference, but maybe they had a differnt brand ign on between the 2 of them. Poulan did that from time to time.

You got a 59B carb on that one?

not sure what the carb is. Andre brought up a point that sounds reasonable but I have yet to confirm it. He read somewhere on here than Lakeside had a similar problem with a saw and it turns out that the particular saw he was working on had an insert in the flwheel that slipped. I have to put them both side by side and see if that is in fact what happened. Now, what's it mean when the carb spits a little fuel back at you? Reed not working properly?

That's probably the reason Nik.
I looked at the IPL and couldn't tell if those reeds can be flipped over or not.
The max standoff on them is .010.
Not sure if they are the same but I have a set from a 4200 (Andre should have them) and a set from a 5200 here if you need them.

Mike
P.S.
I went and out and pulled the reed cage on this 5200 and they should be able to be flipped over.
