Hey guys...

I'll probably get flamed for this, BUT :check:

I got this saw with a bunch of others... it cleaned up nice, and I heard that the POWER on these was pretty damn good.

I thought it odd to be SO clean, with seemingly low hrs (the factory paint is still on most of the muffler) and have play in the lower end bearings....

knowing other saws, and what is required to keep the integrity of the seals, I would think that this is NOT so good...

It seems to tune ok, and run GOOD till it gets warm...then it will almost only run with the choke half on. not sure if it's the carb or not, BUT, presuming the seals get warm, and soft...

it pulls 130psi... should I pitch it outside and work on something more exciting, or swap the top end to the newer craftsman version that has a scored piston?? :check:

Jay

Jay if your talking end play on the crank, forget about it. Those saws run on needle brgs and have end play built in.

It could be a seal problem though, I mean it is a old saw and rubber goes bad. Vac test it to know but I think you have other problems.

crank end play as in UP and DOWN with the flywheel...

It idles great, and will sit there an idle for 10 minutes in the yard, so, didn't think seals...although, after those 10 minutes, I picked it up, and it immediately stalled when I was half-way to the upright position :bang:... sometimes only restarting with the throttle open. :dunno:

I really need to put together a VAC tester...that's for sure. something I've been meaning to do, just HAVE NOT...

Jay ... I think you have other problems.

Mark, what in the .... is THAT supposed to mean?!

Up and down play or radial play isn't good. I'd bet Mark was alluding to seal problems. Agree vac test is needed.

:hmm3grin2orange: Not those kind of problems.

Fuel problems maybe. I have never seen one of those really run enough to have alot of up and down play in them.

Like I said they do have needle brgs and are not as tight as a ball brg setup.

No need to not have a vac setup, you can make one way cheap.

LOL...

by the looks of this saw, cover paint, oil tank paint, plastic not faded, etc, I gotta say, I was a bit befuddled with what seemed like excessive bearing play, up-down on the flywheel.

I'd like to build a vac setup 'way cheap' :hmm3grin2orange: but the $40 for the harbor freight stuff could buy me a saw! lol

Well it looks like the 71-A will soon be able to do duty as a bow saw soon. Soon as I get a chain for it anyway.

Thanks to Tom Coker for sending me the proper upper handguard for this plate bow for it.

I was originally going to use this bow on the 252 but since Cliff is sending me a original 2 piece bow for it and since there is no mods needed to the 71-A to fit the bow to it, I thought it might be fun this way sometimes.

I'm thinking that the 71-A will shine with a bow.

Very nice saws, Mark!

.............. but why do you have your thermostat mounted on (what looks to be) an exterior metal wall? :msp_biggrin:

I like the 71 better as a bow. It just looks "natural".

Still drooling over that 6000, hard to find one at all...let alone that nice.

Flint I agree the 71 looks right like that. I got to get off my butt and get some .404 chains. I'm thinking a semi chisel for the bow might be best.

For the 6000, yes there are some out there, not rare but kinda hard to find. I passed on several before I got this one, as I didnt want to have to find parts for one as parts are pretty hard to find for them. This one cost more but I think it was worth it in the long run.

Stephen -
I bounced that ad info over to ModifiedMark a few days ago (Mark already had one). Seller has not reponded? I hate when crap like this happens ... :angry2:

About 2 weeks ago I contacted a seller in central IL about a really unique saw they had up for sale. No matter how I bent/twisted, we could not agree on when I could arrive to look at it. Keeping in mind I have a JOB too ...

So I see the saw posted on CL a couple days ago. I send the email and explain to them that its like a 3.5 hr trip one way for me. I also explain that if the compression and spark are good (as advertised) the sale is as good as done. I ask if they would drive about :45 - 1hr so to save me 2 hours of driving and they decline.

I'm like COME ON .... if the ad is accurate and the price is what you're asking .... don't whine about the lack of business! :angrysoapbox:

Maybe a silver lining here, though .... I may have a line on a nicer one for not much more $$.

CL Sellers can be STRANGE...

I've been jerked around many times by CL sellers. Very squirrely when it comes to setting/keeping a meeting time or date. I've had guys decide they're not going to sell afterall.................after I've told them that they can consider it sold as I'm coming right over and will pay thier asking price. Had guys do the 'not return calls or emails' thing after they RESPONDED to my CL want ad. If you don't want to sell, then why contact me in the first place??? Strange...

... and I responed to an ad (a bit aged), but still active, tonight. The seller thought I was the buyer calling him back to prank him! Really! Wanted to slap him through the phone!
