I'm glad it's not just me!!!

I have a 2000 here that kicked my dealers butt, so he pawned it off on me and it has given me FITS!!!

The little scoundrel will start and run like a new saw for about 3 cuts then it falls on its face and won't accelerate enough to spin the chain.
If it dies it will start back up immediately but will NOT accelerate.
I've done EVERYTHING that I can possibly think of that might even remotely cause this and I'm totally at a loss.
I guess I'll start on the things that can't possibly cause it next!!!:msp_angry:

My micro acted sorta like that when I first got it. I rebuilt the carb and it got a little better. But mine was gasket between carb and saw body. Once I replaced that it ran perfect.

I'm with ya brother. Yesterday my 4018 would hardly run. This morning I went out and it started and ran fine. Even made some test cuts with it. I'm scared to see what happens tomorrow as I may just junk the whole saw. Drag it behind my truck. I'm at the stage that these saws just aren't worth the effort.

That was actually the very next thing I was gonna try thanks for the encouragement!

I believe both of those saws the 2000 and 180 are reed valve engines. There is no intake port on the cylinder for those. The carb sits above the crank case and right below that is the reed valve. If you know the carb is good then it has to be the seals leaking or you could check the reed valve, but I am not sure what effect that would have. I have a 2000 that I pulled the cylinder on and put in a new ring and mildly ported it just for fun and it runs great.

Hey guys, you are definitely the most dedicated brand group of them all. The Poulan thread has more posts than any other brand thread on AS.

Anyways, I think this is my first post here. Just wanted to share two of my Poulans with you all:

Great looking saws. I sold my 505 but still have my 655bp and 405.

Nice saws!

Ambull, those aren't "real" Poulan saws. I'll help you out by taking the 655BP off your hands .

Now a serious question for 5020AV owners--How 'soft' does the recoil feel? I was looking at the Craftsman version, model 358.35098, and it almost felt as though it had no compression, much like using the decomp on a 50cc saw.

I answered my own question, cut & pasted from the PoulanPro site:

"Effortless Pull Starting™ - Spring assisted starter system for ease of starting."

yeah, they both are reed valves. i pulled the reed out of mine during cleanup and cleaned it real well. looks like it seals properly. gonna have to make me a gasket and try that. i really don't know that the carb is good. gonna put it on another saw and see. if not those then i'll have to pull a vacuum and check seals.
