:monkey: LOL, I used to know a guy that tried making some of those. He gave up, but just might try again in the future.:msp_thumbup:

Gregg,

Gregg. If you go there I need about 3 sets. You should be compensated and I am good with that. Wish I knew how to make them.

anybody know the bar mount pattern for the 5400? is by chance d009(large husky/dolmar).mikes doesnt list it.

Current mount is Oregon D176. You can also use a D196 or Windsor TXL (XL series Homelite) mount bars if you use the 'S' bar stud shim (because your saw has 5/16" studs and the D196/TXL bars have 3/8" slots). Same for most of the models in this series. The 6900, 7700, and 8500 saws (last ones in the series) have 3/8" bar studs and take the D196/TXL mount bars without need for the 'S' shim.

They use the same D176 mount that most other mid- to large size older Poulans use. 306, 245, 3400-4000, 4200, 5200 etc. The large Husky bar can be made to work, but dr. link count will be different

Jim do those have a 3/8" slot or 5/16" slot? They look like Poulan branded Windsors, and I don't think Windsor ever made a true D176 type mount. The Windsor made bar I have on my 306A has a 3/8" slot. The saw has an 'S' shim to take up the space. I think it's a TXL mount bar. Do the bar adjuster holes have oil passages leading to the bar rail (in addition to the sepperate oiler holes near the bar rails)? Mine does.

they have the big slot that fits on my 8500's and came with the S clip so I can mount it on my 5400, they also have the oil passages in the adjuster holes as well as a separate. Will these bars mount up to my 2100 husky? The 36 inch bar would go nice on there with some .404, if not it will go nice on my 8500.

They probably would. You'd have to double check that the oiler hole is in the right place, and that the adjuster nut peg fits right in the hole in the bar. DL count for the chain may be off from 'standard'. It'd be a little loose, as the Husky bar studs are 9mm while the slots on those bars are 9.5mm. Not enough to worry about I'd bet. Put that bar on the 8500 however....:msp_thumbup:

Poulan 245A - Looking for Bar Advice

Greetings All,

I am fairly new to the site and have been enjoying the great amount of information available. To say the least, it has fueled a bad case of CAD.

Recently my father-in-law gave me his old Poulan 245A with a 16" bar. Since the saw is from the family I want to do it right and keep it in good condition in hopes my son may will want his Grandad's saw some day. It is in great condition and runs strong. I am looking to replace the worn 16" bar and wanted to ask for your recommendations on bar length.

First off I know the chain is a 3/8 but not sure if the gauge is .50 or .58. Did Poulan offer a .58 for this saw?

Currently I am considering a 20" bar as I feel it would be a good balance for the power. For those of you who have this saw or have owned it, what length's have you run and what seems to work the best?

Secondly, which brand ('s) would you recommend? The saw will be run occasionally but for the most part will be on display since parts are harder to find.

Your advice is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Deer Camp

I don't have a 245A but I am looking to acquire a nice one someday.
I have been around a few through the years and they are one fantastic saw. It looks from the pics like your son will inherit a really nice example of one someday.
They are great with a 20"-24" but will pull a 28" without any problem.
As for brand, that saw would look great with an original Poulan bar and if I had one in that condition I certainly would be looking for one.

A 20" is what I have on mine and it does just fine. It'll handle a little longer if you'd want but 20 is what I settled on.

I would be in for a set for my 4000 if there is a production run being made. Obviously, I would compensate accordingly also.

Nice saws! Your 245A (and that Mac) will take an Oregon D176 mount bar. The Poulan (but not the Mac) will also take an Oregon D196 or Windsor TXL Homelite bar so long as you use one of the spring steel "S" spacers on the studs. Your saw may have one of those spacers already (my 306A did when i got it). You can run .050G, .058G, or .063G chain on that saw so long as the chain matches the gauge of the bar you end up getting. The saw won't care. I agree with Mike. Get a 20-24" bar for the saw. While it is strong enough to run a 28" bar, the 20-24" bars ballance better with that saw chassis. I have a 20" Windsor TXL bar on my 306A and really like the way it handles. I have a Dayton branded Poulan 245SA that I'm going to run an old 20" Poulan roller nose on with a loop of 3/8" chain and a 3/8"-8 rim.:D

Aaron, what is that saw in your avatar? I have a chance to get one about like it but it has a bow bar, no chain. I have to buy about 50 or more parts saws to get it, he wants 150 for all. What do you think?

Unfortunately there is a story behind that psychedelic paint job. About 25 years ago my Mom was backing out of the garage and ran over a can of pool, I mean cement pond paint, and plastered the entire garage. As a kid my brothers and I thought it was funny but today I am in tears because I cannot get the stuff off without damaging the original finish.

Since this is the first saw I learned on, it is a lasting connection to my childhood spent alongside my grandfather.

Now I have my father-in-law's Poulan (which is in amazing shape) to enjoy.

Thanks Mike. I have been leaning toward the Oregon bars since they are readily available; however, you bring up a great point. If I want to give this saw some much earned respect and pass it on someday, perhaps I should spend some time seeking a nice Poulan bar to compliment it.

Do you have any advice on particular Poulan branded bars and where I may look, other than the bay?

Thanks again for your help.
