Aaron, what is that saw in your avatar? I have a chance to get one about like it but it has a bow bar, no chain. I have to buy about 50 or more parts saws to get it, he wants 150 for all. What do you think?

Joe that's a Homelite 900D. Look closely at my avatar pic.....and send a pic of his saw to me if you can. Lots of Homelites have that basic layout. The 9-series Homelites are worth far more than the rest of them however...........except for the 770GS Stick Shift saws. Get me that pic before you commit if you can. Any other good stuff in the 50 saw lot? A complete 9-series Homelite with a good P/C is worth that price. Others of similar looks but less displacement on the other hand........

I'll probably be going that way sometime this week. There's a gob of parts saws, mostly common stuff. Trying to coax him into throwing the Mac 250 in the bunch to make the deal more attractive. He has mostly Homelite XL12, Super XL parts saws, some Macs, a Solo plastic thing, etc. A couple of them I wouldn't mind having, some probably should be in the landfill. He's wanting out of the saw business but every day he picks out another saw and says "I think I'll keep this one." He was just gonna keep 3 for his personal use and now that number is over a dozen, so doubt if he'll get rid of the 250.

Here's an example of one of the "common" saws I purchase from him last time I was there. It runs great!

Greetings All,

I am fairly new to the site and have been enjoying the great amount of information available. To say the least, it has fueled a bad case of CAD.

Recently my father-in-law gave me his old Poulan 245A with a 16" bar. Since the saw is from the family I want to do it right and keep it in good condition in hopes my son may will want his Grandad's saw some day. It is in great condition and runs strong. I am looking to replace the worn 16" bar and wanted to ask for your recommendations on bar length.

First off I know the chain is a 3/8 but not sure if the gauge is .50 or .58. Did Poulan offer a .58 for this saw?

Currently I am considering a 20" bar as I feel it would be a good balance for the power. For those of you who have this saw or have owned it, what length's have you run and what seems to work the best?

Secondly, which brand ('s) would you recommend? The saw will be run occasionally but for the most part will be on display since parts are harder to find.

Your advice is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Deer Camp

the one I had ran a 28 inch bar with ease, still seemed to pull the 7500 RPM without much bogging in thick wood, plus it oiled it really well.

Here's my 900D right after I got it.

Good lord, look at that hidous looking thing! I'm blind now!:ices_rofl:

Show me a circa 1960 Poulan that could hang with it.:D

This is a photo of a 1960 Homelite full line poster that Chris B put up a while ago.

The 'big three' North American manufactures of old each had their market leaders at one time or another. This was one of Homelite's best, and ruled that size class at that time. Poulan's fantastic 85cc saws came out 15 years later and eclipsed the red and yellow saws in their class (there's the Poulan content).:D

I'll be right back. I got to go post some poulan pictures in the wrong thread :D

RandyMac's been doing that sort of thing for a while. Post a 5200 or 8500 pic wherever you end up. It has to be an answer to a question posed by someone in the thread however (that's what I did). Them's the rules....:D

Some folks say these saws are the answer to everything.
