I enjoyed fixing up my 3400 and I am going to look at a red Craftsman Poulan tomorrow.
The lady I spoke with pulled the model number which I can't match up with anything but she said it was hard to read.
The number she gave me was,

358 958 570

Does that number mean anything to any of you? It has a 20" bar and chain which I assume both 3400 and 3700's came with.

I'm hoping it's a 3700 but would take another 3400.

My Gray 3.7 has the number 358.356091
My Red 3.7 has the number 358.354831 something seems wrong.

I looked it up on the Sears website, seems like the numbers are correct.

Now I just have to find someone who likes old these old Poulans and enjoys trading saws...

Don't know how many you've priced lately, but the bar and chain on that saw are worth what you paid for it!
Get a couple of losads of firewood with that saw, you might not want to trade it at all!

Where are points on 3400? Pulled flywheel and didnt know where to find them.

Wood Shark

I didn't have anything better to do so I went to the local shop and asked if they had any non-running saws for sale. He came out with this wood shark they couldn't get running. I took it home and did my usual primer bulb bypass and turned the H and L screws to about 2 turns each and got it running. Problem is the thing oils the bar too much, way too much! It also oiled the table it was on after I shut it off. I took the oil cap off to relieve the pressure but when I ran it again it still oiled the bar too much. Anybody got any suggestions? I believe this saw has the gear type oiler, if I'm not mistaken...

I noticed the oil was really thin also, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with this 100 degree weather...I'll try draining the oil tank and putting something thicker in it this time.

Could Be A 4200, 358.358870 Is A Craftsman 4.2

When your ready for your money back, just say the word....

I'm not a big fan of the older saws, I really just got it to play with or trade. Another member expressed some interest but hasn't said anything beyond that. You know what I paid for it. I figure $30 bucks on top of that would ship it nicely via Fed Ex. Anything above or beyond that would be interesting.

I'm looking for an Echo CS 400 piston and cylinder and open to other possibilities...

poulans in florida !

finally starting to see more poulans here.... picked up a nice lil25da super in a case ten bucks last week it poped with fuel in the carb piston looks good ...only kinda dark brown not sure whats up with that ? and i have a deal for what looks like a very nice 3700 in green this week ima pay about 125.00 for her but she looks mighty nice.....:blob2:been workin so much i have ten new saws in my lil shop and have not got to any.... oh well at least i have extra cash to buy more LMAO!

Picked up the Craftsman 3.4 today

My Gray 3.7 has the number 358.356091
My Red 3.7 has the number 358.354831 something seems wrong.

I looked it up on the Sears website, seems like the numbers are correct.

Well I bought the saw I had hoped for a 3.7 but it's a 3.4/20

Model number according to the owner's manual is 358.598370
The book notes both Sears Roebuck and Sears Canada. The lady told me her husband bought it in 1981.

It has a 20" Windsor bar with one of those Oregon LP safety chains on it. She gave me 4 X 100 ml bottles of Echo 2 stoke oil, a new Oregon chain (another one of those safety chains) and a Pioneer bar.
Mike, I don't know if my bench grinder wheel will have anything left on it when I take the safety bumpers off three chains.

It's in much nicer shape than the 3400 I have.
Interestingly, it has an adjustable oiler according to the manual. The hole in the case is there.

The left side of the handle has Poulan green paint under the red.

I haven't gotten into it too much but the piston and cylinder look great. Compression is around 125-130., and good spark. The manual oiler works.
The starter pulley will need replacing as 2 of the engagement notches are broken off.

I will get some pics up later.

Got it for $50 which is pretty good for around here.

By the way guys. have a great Independence Day!
