As far as the Poulan numbering system goes: the saws with odd model numbers were direct drive (31,33,45,53,71,etc). Even numbered saws were either chain reduction or gear reduction (32,54,68,72,86,92,etc.)

Poulan chain saw

We bought our Poulan 3400 Counter-Vibe new in 1980. It still starts and runs well and has outlasted several name brand saws. I have the original manuals and parts list. Our newer Dolmar 5100S has much more power but also requires a much stronger pull to get it started. The Poulan vibrates more than the Dolmar. I can't tell how much is due to the modern steel spring anti-vibe on the Domar and how much is due to old-age deterioration of the rubber mounts on the Poulan.

I will get a picture of the 744 tomorrow. I might even try to get a video of it too.

guys i need your help on something had a customer today called me up needing a pts and condenser for a 245A he said he has one that was prior to them making the one with cdi ignition so my question is what is the part #s for the pts and condenser for the 245A is it the same as the 306A ?
since the only ipl for the 245A i have is showing the solid state coil and not the pts system

thanks

If you want to find a Poulan gear drive get a Super 72. That is the best gear drive saw Poulan built.
