I too left my saws stock, I muff modded my 4000 tho. I haven't started on my 3400 yet but a clutch cover is on the way. The saw needs the usual, has great comp and spark, will clean up well. The S25's are great little saws too.
cover is trashed

Poulan S25 Deluxe

I ran mine today in the yard slicing up some small limbs.
Light & nimble, but no chain brake. When they were newer,
I remember cutting with friends who had 3400's, but the 4200 would
make more firewood if you were stout enough to handle it.

3400

Nice one again, Joe. Your right, the paint still looks good, just some cleaning. To bad on the clutch cover, those are gettin expensive, especially a good one. I noticed that an early version also, with the smaller screws on the rear handle antivibe. Looks good.

My favorite Poulan is the 4000. I have one with a 20" bar and one with a 24".
They cut the bulk of my wood, along with the 385xp. The 385 is the first saw I ever owned that had a chain brake. So, I don't mind running a saw without one.:D

Gregg,

Yeah those covers are getting pricey, Ive seen them on the 'bay as high as $35. Hopefully I win the auction I found mine at. I thought it might be an early model as well Gregg. I was told (maybe by you) that some of them had adjustable oilers. This one has the green hood too as opposed to the black. I like the black better...it might see a gloss black hood for its re-build.

I just used my 5200 bow saw to cut up a pine I felled behind the house. Makes short work of anything 20" and smaller.

An adjustable oiler on them is something I have not seen. I wish all saws had that feature. Its gettin harder to find them clutch covers in metal, a lot ya find are plastic.

Good luck with the restore Joe!
Gregg,

Well I lost on the cluch cover :bang: :censored: My fault, wasnt watching. Ill find another. Thanks Gregg, I do find the Poulans my favorite saws to work on too.

Joe let me know if you don't find one, I know a guy who has some new ones but there the plastic ones.

I kinda like them anyway, there wider so they won't clog up as bad and there already green.

Oh and welcome to the new guys, glad to see you here.

Thanks Mark:cheers:, Ill let you know. To Mark and Gregg, my 5 saws in this class: 2 3400s, 4000, Craftsman 3.7 and Dayton 3.4 all have the plastic covers. I thought the only saws with the mag covers were the brake equipped saws from the north.

When did they start using plastic covers on the 3400s, Mine has a metal sprocket cover, Now the filter cover is plastic.

I don't know for sure, I think it was when they went to the newer/blacker decals.

The filter covers were always plastic were they not?

I remember drilling holes in dads new one in about 80 and it was plastic.

Pretty sure mine was bought in the really late 70s or early 80s. and the filter cover is plastic.

I've got some pretty nice ones. 4000, 3800, 3700, 3400, PPS25DA, PP455, and S25CVA. These are the runners and the projects are 254A, 4000, old "4400 bow", and several 1800, 2000, 2300's. I did run my 4000 at the GTG in Arkansas for the first time and it is going to be a decent saw.
