oil

i got a 2 stroke engine synthetic castrol TTS ; but castrol recommends much lesser(something around 2%) that the 5% that oleo mac suggests; so what should i do?i do have a little trouble, cuz the little scred thats next to the on/off it was too much unsrewed so i had to adjust it, but still not running smooth; i did respect that castrol recommended mix, but i am afraid i might damage the engine, is that right? need some help from experts tomorow pics, promise

What fuel mix Oleo Mac recommended 30 years ago is not relevant now, the high quality oils of today can be used at 50:1 in all 2 stroke engines.

thanx

here in spain, we´ve got 2 colour 2cycle engines:red and green and they saying for high revolution should be used green and low rev´s the red one - so i have a red castrol tts synthetic and i am supposed to use 2% for the 271 oleo mac? is this model a high revs or low revs? thanx

soon to the wood

sadly haven´t got chance to take it to the woods yet but as soon as posible.....keep ya guys informed

::(

it won´t start; i only touched the screw next to the on/off button, but no way to start it; where should i start , carburator screws, i havent yet open it inside

really sweet saws. your just gonna have to go back to the basics on firing it up though. need fuel, air, and spark. got all three?

?

good spark, also fuel gets into the piston (probably to much, as it throws out and dont get the chance to fire up?) - air seems all fine

Closely inspect the fuel, impulse and vent lines on that saw. They could be cracked from old age. If they are, replace them. Also, if saw is flooding, are you starting it right? I'm not saying this to be sarcastic, but there are a a lot of people who don't know how to start a saw.

1 Ignition switch on
2 Choke on ( check choke flap when air cleaner is off, and mark choke lever "on" with a sharpy marker) I do this to all my saws because my eyes are old and I don't know what those symbols are half the time. You may not want to write on that saw because that saw is cherry.
3 Pull rope till you hear that pop. Or the sound of the engine trying to start.
4 Turn choke off, and pull rope. Let the motor idle 30 seconds or so before you trigger the throttle. If its revving to high, blip the trigger to slow it down.

I have a buddy who has many machines and dirtbikes and other motorized toys, and he doesn't know how to start his saw. So I'm not kidding when Iask if you know how to start a saw. I have a 272 Oly with a baddly scored piston that somebody reringed and it fires right up. Those Oly's are dependable beasts and if nothing else they are easy starters.

I would love to have that saw.

thanx

well these steps already i done, the choke aint a problem how to use it neither (there is an A aperto-open and a C chiudi-close miy italian pretyy good though), and all the tubes look like new (this saw was storaged inside it´s box always? couldn´t see any crack on it - it does seem to start very easy pulling the rope (very fine), but it wouldnt just fire up - i will need to look closely to the carburator (probably air issue), even though i am doing my best not to touch it before checking all other options - indeed , it is a beautifull saw, heavy also, but weight is no problem for me, i would only use it once in a while (hopefully would leave no marks on it, just to keep it shining)

yes we can

didnt had much time, but got it fixed finally, after removing crab, cilnder etc. runs smooth, and lots of torque; it might have another problem with the oil pump for the chain, it seems that is leaking , didnt had time to look after; if anybody could help me, i would like to give it some more power to this chainsaw, is there any chance ? thanx

Glad you got it going. What did you have to do to it?

regarding the oil leaking. they do that; some more than others. if you feel its leaking excessively there are some things to look at.
1.you can adjust the oil output as described:

"The quantity of oil supplied to the chain can be varied by turning oil adjustment screw. (Do not loosen retaining plug to make adjustment). If the screw is tightened clock-wise until it stops, oil supply to chain is cut off, by turning counter-clockwise oil flow is increased. Basic adjustment: turn screw out (counter-clockwise) to stop; then turn one turn in."

2.the o-rings and/or oil pick-up may have gotten some dry rot from sitting so long. they may be leaking.

Regarding more power, you may be able to get more by modifying the muffler or getting the saw ported. if you were in US i could point you to some good saw mechanics. Since you're not here, i can't help you with a reference.

Olympyk

I bought my first Olympyk in 1979, a used 261, which I proceeded to use extensively in Vermont. It has a million plus miles on it and has needed only very minor repairs. I bought my next one in 1992, a 264f, dont like the exhaust blowing on my hands but otherwise a good saw. I have three others, two 264`s and a 254......love all these Italian saws, very dependable. Who would ever imagine that Italians would know anything about wood? Do they even have trees in Italy? But seriously, I never understood why the brand never seemed to take off here.....they are great!

funny story about Husky vs Olympyk

I had had such good luck with my 261 oly that I decided Id buy another one. I went to a local equipment dealer and even though he wasnt an Oly dealer , tried to convince him to order me a new 26ff. He bought all his saw parts from the same warehouse distributor that sold Oly but he refused. He twisted my arm and finally talked me into a Husky 262xp....it LOOKED impressive, and was $600 so how could I NOT be getting a good saw, right? A few weeks later I decide im going down into the woods with the dozer and saw and all the necessary stuff and Im going to fell some oaks and drag them out.....mmm yeah. I get all the way down in the woods and the new husky wont even think about starting....go back to the shop and get the Oly, do the work....Later that day I take the Husky back where I bought it, leave it. Guy calls me few days later, its fixed, I go there, he says couldnt find the problem but replaced all electronics in it and that it runs, no charge and Im going home.....Was in the process of moving out of state so didnt get a chance to use the saw again until a month or so later, now Im in Indiana. Same deal, load up the dozer drive3/4 mile into the woods and the husky wont start. Walk back and get the Oly and do the work. I look up a local Husky dealer and take the damn thing there, leave it. Two days later its "fixed" so I pick it up. Guy says the rings were bad.....and asks me what kind of oil Im using with my fuel, I say valvoline he says Oh thats the problem, you need to use HUSKY brand oil.....Dont you just hate being talked to like you dont know crap and in a condescending tone? First off, I never put any fuel in it, it still had the fuel in it the seller put in it, secondly it hadnt been run more than a few minutes since new so there was no way it needed rings.....I doidnt argue with the guy cause I knew it was pointless. Next day I drive back into the woods with the Husky, yep, it wont start....That was it, a man can only stand just so much harassment, I threw the thing down in the dirt and ran over it with the dozer. Next time I went back to the area where I bought the thing I took it in and put it on the counter. Guys looks at it says "what the heck happened?" I told him send it back to Husky and tell them to shove it" Next day I found a dealer that would order me a new 264f and been happy ever since :)

Love our Italian saws.

First off WELCOME! I have both a 156 Efco and a 262 Husky. I agree the Italians make a great saw. Who would think!? We Americans with all our great forests can't make beans for a saw and the Italians can. The World is upside down.

My 262 is hard to start(but not always). I've gotten used to carrying WD-40 and starting fluid with me. It likes being warm to start. Starts right up after it's run for awhile. I've learned to live with this inconvenience because it's such an incredible saw. I wish I'd known you before you ran over it with your dozer. I'd gladly taken it off your hands. But anyway we still both love our Italian saws. Love to get a 7200 Efco and port it. Maybe someday. Glad your on here. Good Luck. Bob

Glad to hear that about the 261. I just got done putting one back together that I bought on Ebay last year. Its almost to nice to use. Its a heavy beast and seems to run differantly than my 264's, but the thing chomps. I'm currently looking for a nice clutch cover. The one thats on it has the bottom trimmed off.

husky vs oly

Bob, thanks for the welcome and nice to swap info with oleo-minded folks, but honestly, I wouldnt have wished that 262 husky on my worst enemy :) I tell people the story and they look at me like there is something wrong with me, like as if the $600 I spent for the saw should dictate.....well, you know, a guy can only put up with so much, lol
