been wonderin bout somethin. given that there seem to be very few Oly collector/users (if AS is any indication) and given that they prolly sold at least a couple thousand. where have all the saws gone? have noticed that most of the older parts/runner saws come from MI/PA/WI etc. don't think i've ever seen one from the south. hmmmm.

One of the reasons they're popular (relatively) up here, was that during the energy crunch of the 70s, the Jonsered distributor, Tilton Equipment, couldn't source enough of the Swede saws to keep up with the demand for firewood saws, and took on Olympik. Instant presence in a lot of good saw shops, and a decent product kept them going around here, although dealers are getting scarce these days other than Menards, etc.

posted this as a new thread but decided to duplicate it here.
looking for some rings for my Olys - 251B (49cc),251 Super (53cc), and 264 (61cc). think the last may be available through the dealer but would really like to find an aftermarket distributor. seems like i may have seen one mentioned on AS before but i may just be dreaming. anyone know of one? thanks, jerry

Only guy I know of Jerry is "the Greek", he sells on the feebay, good guy, takes a long time, usually a week and a half-two weeks. Good luck. There is another guy on the East coast, makes them I think, thats all I know about him.

Oly 240 sprocket

Would the oregon sprocket ref 28001 for a Husqvarna 34,35,37 ect be suitable, it has similar dimensions to the Oly sprocket except for the drum depth which is 2mm smaller than the Oly. The Banta web site gives sprocket drum dimensions for various makes of chainsaw so you can compare one with another. Hope this helps.

oleo mac 271

hi huys, apreciate everybody for the good hints - i am into buying a brand new oleo mac 271, but have no idea about this saw - if anybody has some pics and details (manufacture year, horse power, cc etc) it would cost 350€ - i know is a lot of money and don´t know if i could get something as good for the same money

I've got one, well used, here. I don't have any exact dates of manufacture, but the design dates back to the mid 1970s, and was replaced by the 272 sometime during the 80s. Acres' web site doesn't have much information on them, but they're 65cc+- a couple ccs by my measurements, not a real high revving saw like the newer ones, but lots of torque.

350 euros is almost $500 American. It sounds like a lot to me, even for new in box, but I don't know what a new saw goes for over there either.

If you're buying it for use, there are a lot smoother running saws out there, the 271 has no anti vibration at all and will get really old after a while (Trust me, I pretty much grew up running the one I have). For a collection or just for a toy, it's a fine example of the Italian saws.

Jeff, I completely forgot to send that AF cover!!!! You can flog me as needed the next time ya see me. I'll pop it in the mail Monday.

wow

thanx for the answer - well chainsaws aint cheap around here, probably double as US are, example a jonsered 2171 i cannot get for less that 600 € (900bucks ?) - so i assumed i would better get that oleo mac 271 , but still not sure about it - what do you mean that ´´soon will get really old´´ regarding this oleo mac 271? (my english is so and so, just didnt get the point)

?

if that the only difference, i would be k with it, as long i would only use it to cut firewoods once a month; i cant find better offer for a newer chainsaw (modern) for a similar amount of money , with 65cc

Kinetics,

I will pay for shipping both ways and send you a great running Olympik 264 (good antivibe) for that 271. Like I said, I grew up on that saw and would love to have a NIB one.

PM me if you are interested. Any saw in my signature is possibly up for trade.

thanx for your response; i am actually into buyin it or not, as my idea is to get a brand new saw, around 60cc, but of course, what i am looking for over here, goes for at least 600€(+-850$) which i consider a lot for my budget, so i found this oleo mac 271 bnib for 350€ , which i have no clue about it, as i can´t really find any details around the internet;my wonder, are they that old saws and why isn´t there any info´s about it? to change it for another saw, i would only consider a more recent (actual) model of saws if posible, new one, as i could also get for 450€ a stihl ms440; i am still not sure if i should buy the oleo mac (for the years it´s got, antivib etc.) or shoud i get the stihl ms 440 (also bnib)for 100€ more?

I hate to say it, but the Stihl might be a better idea for you. For someone who just wants to play with it, the Oly is a nice machine. If you just want something that's gonna work, and have parts easily available when it doesn't, the 440 is probably much better. Coils and such are hard to find for the older Olys if one decides to quit, at least here in the states.

As far as Stihls go, the 440 is probably one of the best saws they made.

well

could you send me some pics of that olympuk 264 and what is the manuf date on it and model ; parts for the oli are easy to find either directly from italy (mostly original oli, oleo etc.) or from greece and they are very cheap; what other saws you could offer for swap?thanx

steve,
if you and kinetix can work a deal it might be a good idea to have him drop some electronic coils in the box when he ships it. man, you would be in tall cotton if you could come up with some nib coils for our saws. hmmmm! struggling to keep my hopes under control.

kinetix,
my first saw was the 251B oly which i bought new back in early 80's. not an AV saw. point is, i don't seem to have as much issue with non AV features as many others since i've never had opportunity to do much cutting with an AV saw until i got my 264. that 271 would be a fun saw to get. like steve, i think its probly overpriced but then you gotta go with the market value where you are. how much would NIB electronic coils cost and how much would shipping be?

too bad

i would sadly have to say you guys that i will probably let go that 271, as other better deals come up to me (ex: was that stihl144) - i would need couple of days to do some research to look for the parts you asking me) and my interest is to have a ´´actual´´ saw and posibly the 271 it isnt the right one for my needs as i understood from your messages, guys(even though i would have to pay a bit more);
