Looks like a good one to start on, seems to be all there so what you gonna do with it? Full restore or cleanup and paint.?

Jerry, That polished recoil cover is not original, it was painted but when I stripped the paint I just thought it would look nice to leave it unpainted & polished.

I like that look better than the factory yellow. Just make sure it doesn't flash the sun in your eyes when you turn the saw on its side to make your face cuts. :)

I'm interested to see what you end up doing with your Canadien...

I'll make sure I'm wearing my extra dark tint safety glases.. :)

My 620 is looking better now,

Gmax,

That looks like another excellent restoration. Those old Pioneers just seem to have the lines and curves to make them stand out restored. You guys here, are getting so good, I'm second guessing posting pics. Knowing the competition I'm up against.....\
Great work

Drew, As far as I'm concerned this is not any sort of a competition , i just enjoy tinkering with old chainsaws, painting them is the easy part for me.
I used to be an Industrial spray painter for 15 years, please post all the pics you want, (the more the better).

x2

As far as I am concerned we are just a bunch of guys that like chainsaws. Some of us prefer different brands, although we still recognize a fine looking saw when we see one.

I will be doing my first restore on a Jonsereds M36 soon and will start a thread on it. It certainly won't be strictly for show as I hope that guys like Pioneerguy600, gmax, stinkbait, bsnelling, etc will read the thread and comment on my work. I expect to learn a lot doing that first one and hope for a lot of comments from AS members, and especially hope for some constructive criticism.

I'll tell you what, tho - I've been watching this thread with interest and you can bet that if I ever find a suitable prospect I will be restoring one of those old Pioneers myself. A lot of it is the care and attention to detail that these guys dedicate to their restorations, but those Pioneers sure come out looking pretty!

Thanks for a great thread, guys.

Gmax,

The comment was intended with the utmost respect to the work you have done on your restoration. I never intended it to be taken in the context that this was somehow a competition/race or other such notion. You, along with Jerry, Propliner, and all the others that have taken the time to capture their respective restorations on digital media and post them here, deserve the kudo's you receive, for a job well done.
Please do not take my comment as anything other than an excellent job on your restoration. I sincerely regret, that my comment was taken as any type of challenge or competition. I really enjoy all of the hard work that is posted here for the rest of us to admire. I apologize for not thinking about my comment before it was posted

I didn't take gmax's comments as being a reaction to any perceived negativity on your part.

IMO his comments were meant to be supportive of new guys like me who may want to get into restoring old saws, but may be too intimidated by the high level of skill shown in this thread (I am not intimidated, but I certainly could be by the skill level shown here! :D).

I applaud your willingness to apologize (rep sent), but really feel that no apology is necessary as gmax was merely encouraging you (and others) to post up pics of your work.

I have learned a huge amount from this site and the people here have really gone above and beyond to help me out with a variety of questions and concerns. I was just making sure that I didn't muddy the waters ;)

Omc

Wow! I can’t believe the amount of knowledge, information and collections of Pioneers that are posted in this forum!

I have an OMC chain saw. I'm wondering if anyone knows any more history on it, like how many were produced, what year, etc. There is very little information on this chainsaw on the web and doesn’t seem like there is many of them out there.

What really prompted me to post is seeing that last picture of the GMAXs 620 and how identical it looks to my OMC.

I hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree in this forum with the OMC. I figured it would be a good place for me to start learning how the forums work.

Disston

Welcome to AS!

The Pioneer gurus will be along shortly, but in the meantime try doing a web search on the Pioneer 650. It was introduced in 1964 to replace the RA. Your saw looks an awful lot like the 650.

I just learned a lot more in just a few minutes. I was thinking it was prior to Pioneer buying out OMC. It all makes sense and now I know. Thanks for the information Chris!

The Pioneer guys must be off restoring some saws! I know very little about these saws, but here is a bit of info to keep you going.

By the looks of your saw, it was quite a bit before Pioneer bought out OMC in 1977.

Here is the basic rundown of the timelines:
- OMC bought out IEL (Pioneer) in 1956.
- OMC quite making chainsaws in 1977.
- Pioneer employees form group to take over operation (LMBO?) in 1977.
- New group starts producing saws in 1978.
- Pioneer sold to Electrolux in 1983.*
- Pioneer become Pioneer/Partner

*When the "Pioneer" doors closed they were testing the P35, few of which made it out the door. They are super rare and if you ever come across one it would definitely be worth grabbing.

wayne what was the paint brand and colour for the yellow you used on the 620. make it easier for me to tell the local shop what i need, thanks aaron

arron, The brand paint is "protec" 604 acrylic urethane enamel, it's a 2 pack paint 4-1 mix, it's pretty toxic stuff so don't breath in to much of it.

The colour of the chart is custard" but it had green tinter added to get a closer
match.

Another thing, I use Protec "426 vinyl etch primer" on the bare metal areas,
otherwise the 2 pack paint will peel off in no time (especially on mag alloy).

It's good that you have a mate that can spray paint, "lumpy custard" can be a nightmare to fix :dizzy:

yeah he said he gonna teach me a few tricks on spraying properly, ive worked with him a few times spraying truck trailers and big stuff but nothing small and detailed
