Well a couple of weeks ago a package from Danny Henry (dozerdan) arrived and it contained a power ported 372XP sporting a 20" bar and some 72LG. Dan warned me that the saw would not win a beauty contest and he did not disappoint. The saw is a demo that everyone and their brother on the east coast has tried out.
Power Porting is Dan's process for hopping up stock saws(i.e. Walkerizing). He can explain the differences in his process versus others. Since no one on the East Coast on this board has been offering this service I was glad to hear that he has been modifying saws for the last couple of years. Shipping to British Columbia sucks due to cost and down time.
Well anyway he sent this saw and I ran it against my Jonsey 670 with a Walkerized muffler and K/N. Since the 372 has 5 more cc's I expected to lose but I noticed the difference immediately. In the 20" test oak I had dropped the PP372 just sang. Completely buried in red oak and I had to work to keep the saw occupied. The 670 was getting the job done but the 372 was a riot
And anything under 16" I COULD NOT slow the saw down no matter what I tried.
Next I let my buddy borrow it for three days in his tree service business. His saw of choice is a stock 046 I almost had him talked into sending to Walkers since it is only a season old. He was very impressed with the PP372 and despite the 5cc disadvantage the 372 outcut the 046 in every test. Myself, my buddy and his old man(Homelite 650 and 750 guy) all agreed there was a distinct difference in the saws. This saw would fit right in between the 046 and 066 if they were stock.
Now keep in mind this is well worn saw and we all know the worst thing one can do to a saw is let everyone and his brother use it. It starts quickly and has loads of compression. Sadly this is my last weekend with it.
If I had to put my impression of the saw into two words they would be PISSED OFF
Thanks Dan
Now its time for a little port work on the 670
