Here's some pics of the piston, I wet sanded it with 800 grit sandpaper and brake cleaner. Worked well.

In this photo, you can really see the single dark spot in the middle of the piston, that is what I believe to be a piece of embedded carbon. Anyone think it'll be a problem to leave it there?

I'm not sure, think it will be ok might be able to polish up the top of the piston with some very fine steel wool.

I was wondering if I could make it shinier... :) Thanks for the tip, I will look around the barn and see if I can find some super fine steel wool.

Now as for the modern filter, I'd have to cut the fuel line, I would rather not if I didn't have to. If a modern filter is significantly better than the felt filter, then I might do the swap. What modern filter would I need?

I would still throw that stupid felt thing in the trash or you will just end up rebuilding the carb again after you do get it running and it sucks all the little felt pieces that break off the old filter up into the carb...

my 2 cents...

Curious, I have perhaps 3 dozen McCulloch saws running with the felt filters and no problems, wonder what I am doing wrong???

Mark

I guess I was just frustrated after getting my 70E running so nice and after a couple hours it started getting all bogged down. Took the carb apart again and found little felt pieces all over in there.

You would definitely know better than me.

I will inspect it very closely and determine if it looks like it'll start coming apart on me. If it looks like it will, then I will replace it with either a new felt, or put that almost new orange Stihl filter on there. I found it laying around, no idea where I got it from. Some garage monkey must've stopped by and pulled it out of his sleeve. Those monkeys... ever seen the trunk monkey videos? :D Look them up on youtube, they're funny. :)

Okay... I need to go work some more on the saw, so I can post more pics... :D

Now that you mention it, I do have one saw, the 200 with a bow bar, that can be unpredictable. Probably worth the time and effort to pull the carburetor off and have a look. Not sure when that will happen but I will try to remember and report back if I find anything.

I replaced the fuel line, fuel filter, carburetor kit, the works and it starts just fine but some times seems to run a bit lean wide open in the cut. As I said, unpredictable...

I now put the new style filters in everything. Just because they don't cost much.

610, I don't think you need to cut the fuel line you should be able to find a new style that fits. The Stihl ones have a huge barb (maybe what you need anyway)and depending on who makes the Husky style ones they have two different size barbs.

I will have to see if the Stihl filter I have will fit. If it does, I will use it. The super fine mesh looks like it would filter better, and let more fuel go through. We'll know for sure in a while.

As usual, I got sidetracked by the various threads on this site... but, I remembered I had this fixed today...

This is the weld that actually made this one piece again...

This is the weld that simply covers up the chain marks... I decided to leave it as is, I I think it looks nice. The possible future owner may grind it down, so it's blended in with the rest of the tubing profile, if they like.

This is the whole handle... as you can see, it still has the crap left on the inside area of the handle, I am not one of those who would try buffing that off with the 3hp wire wheel buffers we have there... I plan on buying a stainless steel brush for the angle grinder to clean the rest of that gunk off. New owner can use a torch or whatever pleases him/her to clean that off, if I don't do it already.

I really hate to bring you all news of yet ANOTHER car-related setback... :bang:

I did an oil change on my 1984 Maxima... everything was all fine and dandy, until I started driving it from my house to the highway on ramp... that's about when the belts started squealing like stuck pigs, so I looked at the alternator output gauge, and it was reading about 8 volts... crap.

So, I pulled into a gas station and popped the hood. As soon as I opened the hood, it was raining coolant. The water pump decided 174,000 miles was a good time to take a ####. (yes, original water pump from the factory, damn long time for any water pump) So, I now have to do the water pump and some hoses, and the belts, and new coolant on the Mad Max... I guess this is what I get for being a guy that works on cars... how fun. :bulgy-eyes:

Good thing is, I should be able to get it done by the weekend. (knock on wood, I really hate Murphy) I said this car was reliable, and he decided now is the time to make the water pump go bad.

The moral of this story... DON'T FORGET TO SAY "KNOCK ON WOOD" AFTER MAKING A POSITIVE STATEMENT ON ANY QUALITIES OF YOUR MECHNICAL EQUIPMENT. Sorry for yelling... needed to get the point across. Should I make a thread on it in the OT forum? I don't think many would be interested in the first place.

:bang::bang::blob2::angry::censored:

Alright everybody, I'm back to the saw... temporarily... :( I will be working on the CRX this week, starting tomorrow, to put a new timing belt and water pump on before it decides 160,000 miles is the time to quit... Last thing I want is to get stuck with a cylinder head with bent valves. My brother drives this thing 120 miles a week. this is a four day week too :dizzy:

Moving on... I got the recoil cover and rim today in the mail... the recoil cover fits perfectly and will top off that "well-used" look. :) As for the 3/8's rim, a little bad news... it's too small to fit on the clutch drum. Apparentely McCulloch has two... or worse... more different sizes of rims and clutch drums.

Here is a pic of the recoil covers... the one I have on the recoil assembly is the one I recieved in the mail. It is perfect. :) The one to the right is the one I'm sending back.

Here is a close up pic of the rims... if you look close, you can see the size differences in them. The .404 is on the right, 3/8 on the left.

I love this project... getting excessively sidelined with other priorities is annoying. :deadhorse: To be honest, I'll be okay as long as I am able to get it done by April. We'll see how it goes.

Sorry I send one off a 10-10. I'll put the correct one in the mail tomorrow a 3/8" 8 pin. Ron

As far as I know, there are three different size splines and rim sprocket.

Mini - used only by Stihl on smaller saws, which happens to include my 036

Small - used an many smaller saws including some but not all of the 10 and 600 Series drums

Large - standard used on most bigger saws

I don't remember all the particulars, but I think the large is 7/8" across.

Everyone should have a supply of sprockets for large and small splines just to be prepared...

I see. Well, if he wants those rim sprockets back, I will send them back to him. Otherwise, I will hang onto them for another project.

The 8 pin 3/8" sprocket is in the mail. Ron

Thanks Ron!

Good news... I will be able to work on the saw! Finally. :) (knock on wood) As a result, there will be more pics and some progress... however, I do have to return some cans at meijers first, as the garage is completely packed, lol. :)
