I'm looking for a project saw. Anybody got a recomendation on one? I'm pretty much set for a Stihl or a Husky because of available local parts. I really just want to make sure I don't get one that has a lot of hard to find stuff. I was thinking of something in the 30-50 cc range.

What are you looking to do with the saw? The perfect project saw is one that costs you nothing to obtain and will meet a need when you are done with it. I found a couple of Craftsman 2.3s that will be good for limbing when I am done, and they were almost free. You could probably get a small project saw from someone here for shipping if you're not too picky.

I'm not real picky, like I said, just don't want to get something with hard to find parts. It will most likely be a limbing, around the yard saw, stuff like that. But it will also be a backup for the 570.

An 029 is always a project saw; as its a real ????? to work on compared to the 26/36/46/66 etc saws. In fact the one I did for a local rancher almost cured me of working on project saws. :deadhorse: On the other hand, when its in good shape, its a nice performing saw for limbing, etc. If you are looking for an easier project, the 028 and other above saws are great to work on I think.

I'm liking the 034 for a project saw. Lots of parts out there, easier to work on than the 029, great saw to cut with and has more value when you' done!!

I'd say 024 or 034, carcasses are cheaper and parts are readily available many and interchangable parts with the larger 026/036s. 028 is a great saw to learn on too, just seem to have a lot of extra parts compared to the following generation of saws. long production run too, great crossover saw, definitely look for one with the safety features, chain break etc..Building for resale, 034 would be my choice, a real joy to cut with also.
my 2 cents, which frankly is worth less and less every day....B

I just finished a project Poulan Micro XXV - granted, it's not a Stihl........ $10 for the saw, got new rings, complete gasket set, air filter, crank bearings & seals & fuel lines for $35 from Ordertree. I've got a great little limbing saw for less than 50 bucks. Matt

Its real hard to find good used 024 cylinders and there isn't an aftermarket source for them. There is however genuine oem readily available on ebay along with alot of aftermarket companies that have 026 pistons and cylinders. If your looking for a saw in the 034/036 class you might as well go for an 034 super or an 036 since they are a better saw, lot of parts are interchangeable with the 034, and they are more valuable when completed. My vote would be 026, 028 super, or an 034 Super/036.

034/036 Interchange

Will the cylinders from the 036 fit the 034? What are some noticible differences that seperate the two saws?

No one rebuilds Huskys?:D All the votes are for 026, 028, 034, 036. Where's all the Husky fans?

Yes an 036 piston and cylinder will work on an 034. There are some other differences in the muffler, plastic, etc though.

I wish I could get going on my project 028. If I dont soon Imma get rid of it, we have another young one on the way I just found out...:jawdrop: By the way...034..Awesome saw.
