Thanks! Try as I might I just can't seem to get them posted live. I believe it's my os. I appreciate the assistance. guess I'm just too old to learn this new trick.:frown:

Sl-9

What can you guys tell me about an SL-9? A coworker brought one in today - I guess it was his FIL's and he hasn't run it in 10 years. He misplaced the plug, and I was able to look up what it needs. I offered to try to get it running for him, but I think he's going to try to get a plug and see if it runs (he has some stuff to cut up after the storm). Most likely he'll be back, so I figured I'd find out what I could first.

It's a nice little saw, seems complete. Someone did a fiberglass repair to the rear handle, but it seems serviceable that way. The air filter is clogged pretty good, but there is an inner filter too and the airbox wasn't too awfully dirty. Chain was marked 72 on an Oregon bar, so I assume it's 3/8 0.050"?

Any particular areas I should watch out for?

The recoils seem to be the main problem with those style Rems. If its good and spark and comp are good it shoundn;t be that hard to get going. I've heard of oiler problems with those saws too.

The recoil starter on the SL-9 is a miniature Fairbanks Morse setup. I've never seen an FM starter that small before. It's like you shrunk a Homelite C-5 starter by about 50%. Sometimes the FM starters can be cranky....

Remington IPL on CL....

This guy has been listing his Remington IPL on my local CL off and on for the last year (at least). I have no connection with him at all. It's too far from me to bother driving to get it. Maybe somebody here wants it and can get the seller to ship it to him. His listing mentions the electric start versions as well...

No glaring areas to watch out for. Usually a good cleaning is all they need. Pretty good homeowner saw for it size. The recoils can be tricky, and they need to be clean and free of grease to work well. Especially on the fiber thrust washers. Clean them off with carb clean or brake clean, then touch them up with some fine sand paper, clean again and reassemble. Pay attention to how worn the starter cup is also.
Run into problems, post them up here.:msp_biggrin:

Operation of the F-M starter dogs can be improved by making shure the spring and fiber washers are doing their job. If you have the room under the 'E' clip on the end of the pulley spindle an extra thin washer to increase the spring preload don't hurt at all.

I have the ones on my C5 and Skilsaw 1645 stacked almost solid.

Thanks for the info guys. My coworker is taking the day off and planning to try and get it going, if not I expect he'll bring it back in and I'll take a shot at it, and I'll see how what kind of condition it's really in.

Well, he called me today and said it fired up and cut pretty well. I had told him what file to use and he dressed the chain. The biggest problem he had was that apparently bar oil is not to be found around here after the storm. Which is a problem because I'm getting low, but then I'll be out of town until Friday so hopefully they'll get more before the weekend.

My Grandfather recently passed away, and I inherited his old Remington chain saws. 3 of them that have not been run in some time.

Remington Powerlite PL-4

Remington Mighty Mite Featherweight 2.1 CI

Remington Super 990

All 3 saws were used, but still look to be in fairly decent shape for their age. The last I can remember, all of them were in running condition, but have not been run in probably 10 years.
I have read that they are great saws, and I was looking to purchase one anyway, So I would like to fix them up. I have spent two days trying to dig up research on these saws with little luck. I saw many posts from this forum, so I figured I would give it a try.

I'm looking for some service manuals, Parts breakdowns, and some tips on how to properly restore these saws.

If needed, I can upload pictures of each, and the serial numbers on the PL-4 and super 990. The might mite has no tag on it that I can find.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I first made a new thread about this, then was instructed to ask questions here. I have posted pics on the other thread.

Glad it all worked out. Interesting take on the bar oil. It''s the one thing you never think will be a problem getting, but all cutting "grinds" to a standstill without it. ;)

Sl-4

I've found some info on this with a search, but not my answer. I need a clutch drum/sprocket and bearing for my saw. The clutch itself looks good. At some point someone has replaced the old drum with an ill fitting one, wrong diameter for the journal. The bar and chain are 3/8", which appears appropriate for this saw (I think the PL-4 was .404). My journal measures about .353. Thanks for any input.

Do you have part numbers? I have many odd-ball spur sprockets, some w/ bearings, some w/out. When I researched them I didn't find any Remington references, but that doesn't mean some of them wouldn't work.
