It irks me how some people who claim they are the only ones who love dogs have driven the cost of pet ownership through the roof. I've had pets my whole life, vetted them mostly at home minus a few necessary vaccines and all have lived long happy lives. Many lived longer than expected for their breed etc. On average I would guess I spent less that $100 on each one for their entire life.
Today's vets are convinced they deserve matching pay to top brain surgeons and have pushed the cost of pet ownership well beyond the reach of many. Going so far as to tell you what treatment plan you will use as if you have no say and expect you to be fine with hundreds of not thousands in bills. Their arrogance is astounding. I wonder how many people have taken their pets home and put them down because they couldn't find a reasonable vet?
I watched sadly as our last real vet in this area was bashed by all the new young greedy vets who simply wanted his customers. ( Of which he had hundreds and hundreds who loved him dearly) They did their best to take him down so they could conspire together to ramp prices but his reputation was too solid. He had long lines every single day til he passed.
RIP. Doc Brester
Thank you for speaking my mind, Bob.

We took our cat to the vet a couple years ago, he was obviously in bad shape and I think it was his time to go.
They said they had to keep him overnight to run some tests, the next morning he was dead and they handed me a $550 vet bill, and a dead cat....with no real diagnosis... 🤬

Sounds like you have some pretty rotten vets around you. My wife is a certified vet tech, has worked at the same place for going on 10 years and they daily have to turn new customers away. Yep, some of the bills are expensive, but that medical. They are using basically the same equipment and drugs we get treated with. Let alone go through years of schooling, and need to keep up with continuing education credits to keep their licenses. Let alone the cost increases of the meds, equipment etc.
I do agree it's your pet, and they should give you options, which the clinic my wife works for is pretty good with that.
At the end of the day it's still a business and costs need covered.
I agree costs have gone up and I expect it to be more these days. I'm sure as well that there are good vets out there just not around here anymore. The NECESSARY stuff I have no issue with. It's the things that aren't that bother me. For example, I took a pup in recently to get round 2 of dewormer. He had cc ame from a reputable breeder and had been seen by a reputable vet. I had full documentations to prove it. Had the list of meds he had been given and he was a perfectly healthy pup. Still no vet in sight would even consider giving me the meds over the counter which doc Brester had done for years. He would say " I know you know what you are doing and I need to be available for babies that really need me". All the vets I called refused to even talk to me unless we did an initial " first visit check up" usually ranging in the $250 range, then there would be a separate bill for the $5 dewormer that would probably have came out to another $100.
Simple greed, and completely unecessary.

That sounds like the worst vet around here. I gave a dog regular flea baths and kept meds on him. He did NOT have fleas! Took him to the crook, err I mean vet for routine stuff and when I got the bill, I had been charged for flea treatment $125 extra!!!! . They said they found a flea on him. Imagine that, I sat in a vets office for an hour , waiting and they found a flea on him hmmmm. At a minimum, they should have asked if he had been treated already. I was scared he'd have a reaction. They probably didn't give him anything anyway. I found out later, almost every animal owner that went in there got the same sham racket.

Wow that's crazy. Office visits are $85.00 where my wife works. Can't comment on how they dispense medications. I know there's a lot of stuff that requires prescriptions, and that requires a visit. Over the counter meds shouldn't, I don't get real involved though. Really sounds like your getting taken advantage of imo.

Looks like about $20 worth. What do you cook them in?

I spent the coldest winter of my life building scallop gear. Upside was that a gallon of scallops off the boat was $24.
Cast Iron Skillet, fresh butter from a local farm , and sea salt, done 👍

I use 50-50 butter and olive oil. After the scallops are out I deglaze the the pan with lemon juice, reduce the liquid and serve it over the scallops. Yours are browned better than mine. I'll have to try straight butter next time.

I really think it's a local thing. I know of a vet who still has a vets heart, but they are too far away for day to day pet needs.
I think ( and several hundred others ) that the vets in this area literally conspired to fix prices knowing there was nothing else close. There was much discussion on it a few years back , even articles in the paper. The vipers even called inspectors claiming the one good vet was providing sub standard care. They found nothing of course and the vipers just had to wait til doc passed to do their dirty business.
One more.example of docs character.....years ago I took a stray over ( they get dumped here constantly). Doc asked if it was another stray and I said yes. You keep finding them homes don't you? I said yes. He answers " how bout this, on the strays, you feed em and I'll vet em! " I never saw another bill for the strays.

Not so much with the vipers.
