It irks me how some people who claim they are the only ones who love dogs have driven the cost of pet ownership through the roof. I've had pets my whole life, vetted them mostly at home minus a few necessary vaccines and all have lived long happy lives. Many lived longer than expected for their breed etc. On average I would guess I spent less that $100 on each one for their entire life.
Today's vets are convinced they deserve matching pay to top brain surgeons and have pushed the cost of pet ownership well beyond the reach of many. Going so far as to tell you what treatment plan you will use as if you have no say and expect you to be fine with hundreds of not thousands in bills. Their arrogance is astounding. I wonder how many people have taken their pets home and put them down because they couldn't find a reasonable vet?
I watched sadly as our last real vet in this area was bashed by all the new young greedy vets who simply wanted his customers. ( Of which he had hundreds and hundreds who loved him dearly) They did their best to take him down so they could conspire together to ramp prices but his reputation was too solid. He had long lines every single day til he passed.
RIP. Doc Brester
I grew up in a town with a vet like Doc Brester. Supposedly he was the head of his class at U of I vet school. Horse/farm doctor. He hunted quail and rabbits and dogs of his own. Bare bones office at his home. One exam table.
Well he eventually passed away too early and another vet set up shop in town. New building was built, 4 or 5 exam rooms. When you went there, you felt you were at a docs office (MD). I inherited a cat from my Sister and last year towards the end of here live I took her to the new vet in town where she got her annual shots. I got the cat registered there because it was close. Took her in because she wasn't eating any more. The new vet wanted to do $200 of tests. I left with a $65 general exam bill.
The vet that had passed away had a friend/classmate in a neighboring town. Carbon copy of the old doc. House converted into a shop and a horse/farm doctor too. I took my cat there a couple of days later. He smelled the cat's breath and knew what was wrong. Kidney failure. He ran a urine test strip and a diabetes test strip (like humans) that ran $10 each. So the end was near. He tried to restart the kidneys by hanging a bag of fluids ($20) which worked for a day. She passed a few days later early last year. I think the total bill was only $75. An old time doctor with some common sense and compassion.

Yep. Those days are gone I fear. Sadly in the end , it's the animal that suffers due to a humans greed. I can no longer afford to care for the strays so they go to the pound and wind up being killed. I know others who have had to give up pets they loved because of this new craze of spending insane amounts of money on unnecessary things. It's sick how some try to shame others in to spending money on frivolous things. If you ever hear of me getting my dog's nails done, load a gun and shoot me please!

Thank you for speaking my mind, Bob.

We took our cat to the vet a couple years ago, he was obviously in bad shape and I think it was his time to go.
They said they had to keep him overnight to run some tests, the next morning he was dead and they handed me a $550 vet bill, and a dead cat....with no real diagnosis... 🤬
My wife took our very sick dog 20 years ago to Tufts Veternary Center in Mass. I knew the dog was terminal and she wouldn't listen. I think she dragged this out for 4 days before I blew my top. We put the dog down and she paid the bill in the low thousands. They couldn't tell us what was wrong with the dog. Our last dog was a real sweetheart. She tore a hip at 12 years old. My wife paid $4500 to have that repaired. We got 2 more good years out of the dog before her hips started giving out. My wife pumped her with drugs for 2 more years before I gave her an ultimatum of putting the dog down or I will. I couldn't deal with my dog suffering anymore. I had just gotten my knee replaced and couldn't afford to have this 80 pounder falling over into my leg. I sure do miss her.

We'll be going the puppy route if/when we get another dog. My wife seems to think we should get both the kids dogs.... and wants them to have the puppy experience. Which im.not opposed to. Just the cost associated with getting dogs has been overwhelming. It will be some time either way.
Sawdust Man has some pups for sale. I don't know if you live near him or not.

That sounds like the worst vet around here. I gave a dog regular flea baths and kept meds on him. He did NOT have fleas! Took him to the crook, err I mean vet for routine stuff and when I got the bill, I had been charged for flea treatment $125 extra!!!! . They said they found a flea on him. Imagine that, I sat in a vets office for an hour , waiting and they found a flea on him hmmmm. At a minimum, they should have asked if he had been treated already. I was scared he'd have a reaction. They probably didn't give him anything anyway. I found out later, almost every animal owner that went in there got the same sham racket.
That is ridiculous. I would have said no way, I just gave the dog a flea bath.

One for the Ford guys too

1978 and 1979 Ford Faimont and Mercury Zepher bodies were so cheaply made that they made tin can popping noises when stepping on the gas and letting off the gas. On the highway they had vibration sounds down under. That included the Mustangs. The cure was to hang a tuning bar weight off of the rear end chuck area. The popping sound cure was to dimple the crap out of the drivers side rear seat floor pan with a 3 pound ball peen hammer. I did a lot of these cars back then.

$27 a pound for the big ones here in Mass now. I love them but I can get Lobsters for $8.99 a pound.
Wow, I'll have to pass on both...☹️
$4 a pound for meat is about where I turn "vegetarian"....... I guess that's why we have about 50 hogs in the back forty...

You too Nate, and thanks for the beautiful pic!

I've got to go back to some of our old hiking pictures to find anything close, but a lot of folks don't know the beauty of NY (too bad about the politics).

These are all from near the Hudson River just above Cold Spring. The bridge is Rte 84 Beacon/Newburg, to the North are the Gunks in New Palz (Limestone) and the Catskills farther North. The last pic shows Breakneak Ridge to the North of Mt. Taurus. Granite from Breakneck Ridge was cabled down to barges in the Hudson, and was used for the Brooklyn Bridge, West Point and the steps of the Capital building in Albany.

Several of these peaks served as lookout points for the British coming up the Hudson during the Revolutionary War. So. Mt. Beacon has a restored fire tower and is the tallest peak between the Catskills and the Ocean.

We celebrated our Canada Day on Saturday. BBQ with friends. A couple of us had exchange students so we had some Canadian traditions to share with kids from France, Italy and Switzerland. Our students flew home yesterday after being here for the school year. We sure will miss ours.
Happy 4th to my American friends here. Hopefully you enjoy family, food and fireworks!

If he didn't live so far away, or I had the time for a few day drive I'd happily go out to meet him/ take a pup or two off his hands. I live in Lebanon, PA BTW. On Mt Wilson, moat know Mt Gretna the yuppie side of the Mt.
