When I redid the roof about 28-29 years ago the tree (the 4 tree clump) were not terribly big. They were far enough from the house that catkins and burrs never landed on the roof and there were certainly no overhanging branches or even shade. The moss and lichen issues started maybe 3-4 years ago. I am due for a tear off reroofing in the next 3-5 years and a continuous roof vent and zinc strips are in those plans. I redid one of my back neighbor's roofs around the same time (also added sky lights, repaired a broken rafter, etc.). She had moss and lichen problems so I put zinc strips on her roof and it helped. She had picked out a different brand and style of shingle and they didn't hold up as well as mine... She reroofed last year and I did not see any zinc strips added so she may have a problem again on the north side of the gable roof.

I do happen to have one of those interpreters....
Maybe she has less ventilation, it's certainly an issue most don't understand. Continuous venting goes a long way, as does good soffit vents to get the fresh air from the eves. On most roofs I make sure there is less than 16' from the end of the eve to the ridge/vent, if more I add pod vents. I also like at least 2" of opening total at the ridge, more if possible, but that depends on the vent being used and whether you have trusses, or a ridge board/boards which reduce the amount of the opening and the coverage of the vent.
Zink strips work great, many of the newer shingles have anti fungal properties(read chemicals) to help stop growth/blackening of the roof. Newer shingles are also rated higher than in the past, looking at the actual weight per square is a helpful indicator of quality.

If you use the interpreter, they may just start actually speaking english lol. That being said, you can always tell anyone who asks that you thought they could help you tear it down for cleaning, you weren't threatening/brandishing, unless it's not a Chinese model . Too bad those can't be bought for the prices like they used to get for them at the shows back in the day(that was about 75 for my day). The last one I bought was 125 iirc.

She's got a finished and insulated attic with the ridge oriented due E and W. The north side is the problem child... They used to put zinc in shingles when they were organic. Do they still make organic shingles?

When I got the interpreter it came with a bunch of accessories (pouch, oiler, pointy thing, etc.) and 100 refills for $130 out the door.

Pointy thing and refills. 👍

That can be an issue. Soft wash now and then goes a long way.
You mean shake shingles or slate 😆. Technically they are all "organic"...

Nice, it's been 20yrs since I owned one.
Speaking of interpreters... I was looking at the squirrels out back thinking about a chipmunk that's been running around and how I'd never be able to see it with all the leaves on the ground. Next thing you know, there it is lol. You know what happens next, some interpretation ;).

It is nice when interpreters drive home a point!

The organic shingles have an asphalt soaked paper mat. Somewhere along the way fiberglass mats came into use. I haven't looked at shingles in a while and haven't done a roof in a while so I'm not up on the current market. The roof my sons are doing now is being done with Elk architectural shingles. My brother had a roofing business that he ran while on layoffs as a union tin knocker. He passed away after a long disability (spinal cord injury while on a tin knocker job) and there were enough shingles in his storage building to do the house... Saved us from spending a couple grand for shingles now.

I recently saw my neighbor's cat trotting off with one of my grinnies (chipmunks). Less hassle than have uniformed government officials showing up...

Yep, 17gr of point lol.

Well, I managed to get another today  .
They've never shown up here, .17, .22, 223 and 9 are normals here, glad I have good neighbors :).

I know what they are, not sure if anyone still makes them, they weren't the best by any means.
I just laugh at the term organic.
The first wood splitter I bough was down @H-Ranch way. I get there and it's pouring rain, I'm broke as heck and couldn't care if it runs or not, I just know I don't have the time or extra strength to split firewood (hindsight I should have just bought my first couple yrs of wood, but I wouldn't be where I am today ;)). So the guy shows me the splitter and I pulled it over a few times and it didn't start, he insists it runs. So, he pulls and pulls and it finally starts , then I can see it's spraying oil out all over the beam:oops:, and he has to show me it actually splits :dizzy:. I had already told him I's take it, not sure why that was so important to him. Now, what's really funny, it was an organic salsa farm, and he's spewing oil all over the ground not thinking a thing about it (that's how I see many organic folks being). Now, oil is organic after all lol.
Done a good number of jobs with those, depending on the location I used different suppliers, or if the customer had different needs. They go down just like most the other architectural shingles, easy, it's getting them up and to the spot you need them after prepping the roof that's the hard part... Good thing you guys didn't have to come up with the cash, they've come up a lot in the recent past, not sure why :innocent:. Sorry to hear about your brother, can't imagine.

Just threw the last chunk of uglies in the stove. Gonna be a BIG pile of them to burn next year. I went around and collected all the shorts, crooks, knots etc that I had tucked away in odd corners and collected them into one big bunch. Should keep the fire going good well into Nov next year.

Just cleaned up a bunch here, all from cutting the storm damage, they won't be ready for the wood stove for quite a while. I keep them out by the bonfire pit in case I need them as I already have a wire bin with a bunch in there that I can burn in the house if needed. I give them away to people who are short on cash, short on cash, you get short firewood lol.

Really, I'm trying to keep up fellas - I just can't maintain this breakneck pace! (Oak for you firewood snobs out there, and you know who are.)

put you a shelf on that thing brother! you will love it! fabbed me one up last year and after the first use, I wished I had done it long ago! will send a pic.

LOL, funny you say that, I was going to add a 6"x20" cookie to the top but I didn't plan so well to balance it so I didn't.
I saw this and thought of you, I'm sure you can pull that seat off and double your hauling capacity.

Also found this, need a trailer :surprised3:.
This was from the storm that went thru here, it's just east of me, went right by on my way to get some metal for the barn today.
