I have two cylinders need to pick one,, what ya all think.
Big one 6.8 OD 2.5 rod 24 stroke 3/4 ports heavy, calculates to 15sec cycle time about 35ton
Red one 5.5 OD 2 rod 24 stroke #8 orb (1/2 in?)ports cycle 10 sec about 25 ton it is new, might get 3/4 ports
Honda gx390 22gpm all 3/4 stuff.

The bottom red cylinder looks like it was made by PlaySkool compared to the one show at the top.of the photo. Seems like an easy choice to me.

The red one is one up from what most people use for splitters, I gave $200 for it, never used, had to buy it to get my beam, 12ft x 8x8 about W40, package deal.
The big one is near 200lbs and the small is 72lbs.

Thanks.
I am leaning toward the red.
I think you used the OD for the calculation, I guesstimated the ID for the above calculations.
Any body think I should get the red ones ports made to 3/4???

Why would you.use.the PlaySkool.red one? Because.that is.what is on every cost.cutting big box store and.Chinamade Import cheapo logsplitter? Just curious.

not sure if there are other items in addition to size that might steer your decision: overall weight, mounting, etc. Since I was in the mood for some math (finished helping with some 8th grade homework earlier) I took a guess at 1/4 inch thick sidewalls for the big cylinder and 3/16" thick sidewalls for the red one and based on the dimensions you provided, and using a pressure of 2500psi and ignoring losses, I get 32.8 tons for the big one and 21.8 tons for the red one, so 50.4% more tonnage with the larger one. Depending on what you intend to be splitting, you might not need the extra oomph, but wanted to reinforce the old adage that size does matter...........just sayin'.

Worst case splitting 24inch dry douglas fir,,,some has big knots. Used a 28 ton b4 work pretty good, had to do a few from both ends..
Never thought about the losses. Do the factory ones figure that loss factor into their splitters,, probably not,,they like to sell, so on with the big numbers.
Guess I could always try either one, swap if I am not happy.

I would go with the big cylinder and use a 4 way thereby increasing your productivity.
It really boils down to how hard you want to work.
As far as enlarging the ports, I doubt you would notice a difference all said and done. I have a 22 gpm pump and only 1/2" work ports on my valves and it's plenty fast enough, of course heat for me is not and issue as I have a large baffled tank with about 17 gal. of fluid.
Good luck

I for got to add my tank choices as well, a 16US gallon aluminum ex fuel tank, or a proper 45 gallon aluminum hydraulic tank with all the stuff.
I was thinking of getting the large tank re-sized to about 15 gallons, it is also thicker gauge.
An old honda civic rear axle.
My beam is 12 ft long 8x8 around 3/8+ thick, will cut its length later
I have collected all this stuff over the last year or so
Keep the replies coming, and thanks.

if you have the right design wedge the smaller cylinder would be better, better cycle time, and you can still use a 4 way. Again, it's all about wedge design.
The above post appears to be very bad advice and you should most likely ignore that persons posts on this thread and possibly all threads. Yup
