Some serious 090 action... I think I need one of these haha

In that run it looks like Trevor Baker and Ashley Yaxley came out together followed by Wayne Donavan with Brice Pearse haveing some hickup forceing a non finish.

090's are fun for an odd run like that one and its basicly a memorial run in honour of a former compeitor who's choice of saw was the 090. Most of the year they stay at home with only a couple competing year round.

Bricey is a good young fella and is learning every day, he comes from a raceing family with his father (darrel pearse) a champion QLD post cutter and speed racer and his mom ( Tamzin Pearse ) who competes in ladies speed, jack n jill post rips and is also a very highly respected race starter and is the 1st choice of race organizers setting up a team to manage large events.

Never underestimate the power of swearing. It really shows those saws who's boss. Now stop playing with the H jet and go cut sumfin :D Oh and let me say again 066/660's are most definately fuel hogs...

More fuel must mean more power right... and don't forget more awesomeness

Yeah I enjoyed the 090 races - so much noise! haha. I noticed they smelt a bit different to the other saws... they might have been running a different mix? The 88's were fast to but it was hard to tell the difference in speed compared to the 090's, which model would you say is generally faster with all the mods?

Everyone has their pet mix oil Rudi, one NSW competitor I suspect was running ELF HTX909 in his post rip 3120 saw from the smell, or at least something similar at the last training day I was at.

It could just be that they were all using 25:1 or richer in the old 090's too ;)

[edit] BTW it's a frigging freezing day here today after a couple of gloriously warm ones for this time of year.
25-30km/h nor westerly that cuts like a knife.

I was just down at the Fire Shed with a couple of the other fella's and all our noses were running.

Oh right, I thought the fuel mix might have been 'standard' for all competitors but the different mixes would explain it.

gday
just wondering has anyone compeard VALLORBE 7/32 with STIHL 7/32 FILES would like to know how they compare
do they bite and last
cheers

Vallorbe make excellent files, it's what Matt usually supplies me by the box, round, raker and double bevel.

If the Stihl files are marked 'Made in Switzerland', there's a fair chance they are Vallorbe anyway.

rick i tried them pferd crap they are so fine takes about 20 strokes, the smooth finish might be good for a comp chain but up the bush cutting fire wood need some thing with bite

Files are usually available in different 'cuts', if you ever have a look in a catalogue you'll see what I mean, but most of the time suppliers and retailers wouldn't have a clue what types are actually available.......

Actually I just grabbed some of mine and they are 'smooth' (DX), not 2nd cut (MDX) and IMO they are plenty aggressive.

[edit] Put it this way, I only use 8-10 strokes on the chains I cut old sleepers with, and they're full of dirt, stones, etc ;)

Vallorbe or pferd

yeah i got 7 box's of the save edge in 7/32 it's a weird thing the save edge file work's good on the stihl 404 chain i have but they seem too aggressive on the carlton 3/8 and skip across if you know what i mean as i only file one handed maybe i need to get a vice or somthing and file two handed

good evening men,,,, Vallorbe straight cut double bevel is my choice for race and log falling chains. Its also a easier file to learn with when trying to perfect a nice square filed chain.

For my general work chains for firewood and log yard, the bench grinder get plenty of use......

heres a new race chain in 3/8 i'm working on after first reshape of the cutting edge, this chain needs a few hours work yet to be any where competitive and is still full and wide in the kerf. A new chain beside to show the changes.

True true. More fuel ALWAYS means more awesomeness :D

I was just down at the Fire Shed with a couple of the other fella's and all our noses were running.

Snorting cocaine off the firetruck always has that effect. Apparently...

I was running it at about 13,600rpm on BP Ultimate at 40:1 full synthetic. It seemed to be happiest about those rpm's. It came pulling 14,000rpm but was too lean there and lacked torque. Glad it's running properly again :)

I've tried some Pferds as well and found the same as you Darren. Not aggressive enough.

I've found the Save Edge 7/32" excellent across all the 3/8" chain I've sharpened. It is probably just different techniques between individuals but I reckon they're the best file on the market and I've tried most of them. They have a good balance between aggressive and nice finish. I rarely hand file .404" though and it nearly always sees the grinder for some reason :)

Hiya Neil.

You still in Qld ATM ?

You'll get a shock if/when you come back to work, it's frigging freezing, we had our first real frost last night and another on it's way tonight :msp_scared:

No mate, i had to come back to work straight after the titles and been here since, catch up time now as the cost of national titles adds up and my mill gets behind.
I had to pass on the 2 qld shows this weekend, dam shame as they both are worth attending.
Yes bloody cold up here today and a big frost today, today is the first taste of whats comeing....

ooh, ooh, square chain show and tell :D

Here's some old photo's of my first, part finished effort.
Still needed thinning and smoothing after this, and when Neil saw it he informed me I didn't need the dog boning in our timber. Not doing that saves a hell of a lot of work.
