Counsel supplied workbench. ..cool.

Harmonics and resonance are beyond my ability when it comes to a 2t.

The baffle in the 461 looked very much like it was put there for the above reason, that's why I didn't touch the thing....mind you I did drill the muffler cover upside down and ended up with the hole at the bottom when I planned on putting it at the top, a bit further away from the fuel tank, but it's okay, luckily.

Hack Porting specialty....duh!

I should dig through my shelf of proofs, proof of how things don't work, got a 3120 muff drilled out to far, screamed like a winner until it hit the wood :(

Vince. Did you see my spray job on the 461 muffler cover?

Jealous?
Did you? Saw the 029 one which is looking awesome but nothing of the 461. [emoji15]
Edit: just went for a look and saw it. Wow top job! Very impressive paint job.
Should just get a double port front cover.
Holes aiming straight at the log could be interesting. Especially on stringy bark that's nice and dry.

Have triple ported the muffler on the 461. Left the baffle in it as it's not restrictive by the looks of it. Wound the high speed screw out on the carb and I'm out of adjustment and it may be a tad lean but I can't check cause I can't find where rough rich is.....and I don't have a tacho so have to do it the old way....it's idling nicely though.

Now, what do we do to these limiters to get them out and trim them or something? I have no idea as I haven't dealt with limiters on carbs before.View attachment 440508
Chippy just watch going too far forward out from under the deflector with the new outlets, sometimes the exhaust gases can be blown into the brake handle and melt it.. Personally I don't like holes straight out the front on a saw muffler especially cutting timber like stringybark in the middle of summer. Aamazing how fast a little bit of bark on fire falls into the grass and the next thing you're fighting a major grass fire! don't ask me how I know that :innocent: haha...

I have been running with that hole marginally forward of the deflector since I ran that saw in....no problems yet....and the saw picked up nicely as a result of that one hole....was told the go is to triple port that muffler for best results which I did the third hole today........throttle response improved even more but haven't tested it under load yet as I'm not sure of its state of tune as I ran out of turn on the H screw.

As far as the stringy goes, I'll just have to put on a 36" bar to solve that problem, or a bit of high temp race tape should do the trick...

Vince, if you drill a hole on the other side of the muffler and when you finish the hole lever down hard on the drill bit, it will blow hot air over the fuel cap and evaporate all fuel spills...auto clean up.....works better than brake cleaner, honest.

no chance of anything rusting in side there. do they have an internal baffle ?
thansk

Some people call it a baffle, but I don't think it is. It is in no way restrictive.

It appears to me that it is for harmonics/resonance but I'm no expert on that and I could be totally wrong.

It been reported that the saw performs better with it than without it.

Vince, does your exhaust port have an insert in it?
not sure what ya mean by an insert in it chippy?

Thats the same as mine and the ways to go.
What oil you using champ looks like plenty of it in the muff.
using mobil 1. i run 25:1 and there was a batch i made that was heavy handed. it maybe still running that.

yep all well oiled in there!! i didnt do this muffler mod. there looks to be evidence there was an internal baffle once upon a time.

Vince, looking closely at your exhaust port it looks like the port has been narrowed with a liner or insert....it's hard to tell from the pics though.

I'll take a pic of the standard setup on the 461 muffler internals later today and post it then we can work out if it's a baffle or something else all together....will try and get a good pic of the port in standard trim also.
