 Have you been sneaking peaks at young James down the roads 79 Series Land Bruiser ?

You forgot his twin stacks, more antennas than a cop car and 100 LED lights (seriously ;))

I went to Roseworthy Agricultural College Rick. The amount of crap those tools used to hang off of HZ utes still haunts me, even home made bull bars using railway iron and daddy's welder...

talk about close....gotta feel a little sorry for zarko, thought he had one and was celebrating only to get back and be told sorry its a tie and your second because the other guy had a faster best lap.

now bring on moto2 good luck westy

Big tires? Who needs big tires? I've gotten my crummy little first generation Datsun/Nissan Maxima wagon through 2.5 feet of snow several times. It does not stop. Hell, you don't even need a running start, and my driveway is quite steep.

It rolls on 185/75R14's... got some mean ass Hankook iPikes on the back, and some old ass Mastercraft winters on the front... only threw the iPikes on because of the old tires really getting bad on ice due to harder tread compound, and I had an incident where a drift started while I was driving down the highway... managed to keep it in my lane, and correct. Pretty hairy moment there. Traffic on all sides of me... left, behind, in front... they must've #### their pants...

Oh yeah, she still breaks them rears loose... even with 175,000 miles... does not burn a drop of oil... they say the old L series engines are the best Nissan ever made. 400,000 miles without a rebuild is not unheard of.

I wish they sold the Patrols here... I'd definitely buy one for my next vehicle. Just stupid how most trucks here don't even have the reliability a chinese wristwatch. Not to mention all kinds of problems with all of these damned computers and ####...

I'm looking for an old school truck, like a 60's-80's carbureted V8 truck. I want simple and fixable with duct tape, some screws, a rag, a couple of wrenches and a screwdriver. Nothing sold in dealer lots are like that now... stupid americans indeed...

I will say Ford is the only brand I would buy if I had to buy a new vehicle fresh from the lot... probably get an SVT Raptor F-150... I'd have fun driving that through the pond and at Silver Lake sand dunes...

A SVT Raptor F-150 would definitely be lot of fun! And yes nissan do make great trucks/utes - I have one for that reason

I saw a red one with interstate plates getting fuel here in Australia about a month ago. Dang near wet my pants I did. I didn't even know they existed - when I got home I was straight on Google looking them up :) One of the nicest utes/trucks/pickups I've ever laid eyes on...

They are sweet and the 410hp should come in handy... ohh and you can put some saws in the back - perfect!

I didn't know you aussies could get a Raptor...

Yes, they are very capable, and probably are the only US manufactured truck that could handle the outback that you guys call home.

I know the Silverado, Ram, etc. would probably break down when it is very unfeasible for such an action, and could potentially make a deadly situation to you and your passengers.

A few cruise around here on the streets, and probably for a good reason. Some of the roads downtown are downright gnarly, potholes 2 feet in diameter and 1.5 foot deep ain't uncommon... with a truck like this, you won't even feel it... :D

My Mad Max would do alright in the outback... I'd have to make my own trails, as ruts would stop me... it rides about 1.5" lower than stock since the springs are sagging...

You can count on that L24E being cool as a cucumber in a fridge... even on the hottest summer days, with hard driving, she does not approach the halfway mark on the temp gauge. Can't ask for more than that.

Oh, let me tell you guys... do not ever, and I mean, ever let anyone tell you a GMB water pump is a good one... they are POS that will fail prematurely and at an inopportune moment... the bearing on the one that the crappy mechanic installed simply exploded... it was preceded by strange belt squealing... for the longest time, we couldn't figure out what the noise was... it was the water pump bearing going out. The one on the Mad Max went out after only 40,000 miles. Should've just left the old one on there... :bang: Mechanic told me to change it, and so I went along. Needless to say, I do my own work now...

Go for a Saleri, they are only a few bucks more or in fact, sometimes less than crappy water pumps, and are the best water pumps you can buy. All the company does is water pumps and a couple of other products, so they know exactly what they are doing. The one I bought for my VW has a sick impeller on it... it fills the housing to reduce cavitation and increase flow. It certainly does that.

while were on the subject of fourbys, what kind of clutch would you all reccomend for my gq, is a 4.2efi petrol running 33"s and towing 2 tons daily. the current one is a std duty and is only just hanging on with only 50,000kms on it

i e-mailed both exedy and xtreme clutches this is what i got from xtreme

"I have quoted you on a couple of options including an Xtreme Outback Heavy Duty Clutch Kit (KNI28001HD) which consists of a Heavy Duty Pressure Plate, Sprung Organic Clutch Plate & Thrust Bearing. This would be suitable for Street Use only. There is also the option of an Xtreme Heavy Duty Cushioned-Button Clutch Kit (KNI28001DCBHD) which consists of a Heavy Duty Pressure Plate, Sprung Ceramic Clutch Plate & Thrust Bearing. This has the same clamp load but the pedal effort will be quite a bit firmer & the clutch will also be more aggressive on pedal engagement. This would also be suitable for Street Use, Off-road or Towing Use."

and exedy so far havent bothered to reply

so what does everyone think

4x4's are something I have a little more experience with than chainsaws! I have a 4 Terrain clutch in my cruiser, done about 40,000km and its gripping well and works smoothly.

I've got a BJ74 Landcruisers that I have done alot of work too and use it regularly for what its meant for.

Al, you have clearly taken some of my comments personally. I did not bring "you" into this discussion. Lets address what I have said:

LSD comment: was half poke/joke and have truth. Im 100% certain it helps the perfromance of Terry's ute, but that doesnt dismiss what I have said about its supension design.

Nissan and Toy/bigger tyres: fact is more Nissans and Toys are sold than any other brands, and more percentage (not just numbers) are modiffied. As you know I live on the Gold Coast, here you see everyday lifted (whether it be spring or body) and big tyres 33+ but Id bet on the modded vehicles more 35's than 33's....this comment was not directed at you becuase you drive a Nissan with bigger tyres. The amount and type of offroad work most of these vehicles see do not require bigger tyres and lift. But it is the norm now. If you drive ANY brand with stock size tyres you will come stuck in the bigger ruts left by bigger tyres....

Suspension and tyres/changing the perfromance of the vehilce: Lets take your Nissan as an example. Now with your lift and tyres you can go more places than a stock version.....this does not mean your suspension is doing its primary jobs better. Unless you have changed the axle and chassis mounts on your vehicle with regards to suspension links you have changed all peramiters of it: AS, AD, axle roll angle, roll center heights, vehicle roll axis, bump steer etc. Now yes you can go further becasue you have better traction from a bigger tyre, but part of this is not just the size but the compound and tread......not many 32's have the tread and compound of a simex swamper etc....you probably have more wheel travel and have changed spring rates and shocks.....But I put this to you, a stock sized tyre patrol on stock height springs, but tuned rates and shocks will perform its job better on and off road than any lifted set up.....YET it WONT get as far....can you understand what I mean here. ie the results skew the facts....

Im sure you are one of the people that actually uses his vehicle to its full and definitly gets the need out of the bigger tyre, but here(GC) that is the minority. Hell even out west 99% of the cursiers and patrols run 7.50-16 rags....mostly famers and roo shooters. You dont have to explain to me why your rig is set up the way it is...its YOUR rig and your happy with it. Just like Terry and his little work Lux fits his needs.....I still stand by my comments on tyre and suspension. If im wrong on any of the suspenion ideas im happy to hear, as this is something im very interested in but have only just scratched the surface and need to learn alot more.

Nissans do build a very nice ute with a bullet proof driveline

Generally no I wasn't taking it personal, but I will defend even when it's not directed at me. I basically agree with you but I do see the benefits of "larger" mods and recognize there small drawbacks. You do find yourself constantly defending yourself for your choice in tyres, lifts, vehicles etc though. I have never been able to understand why it's such a problem for others if someone else runs these mods! Seems to be a real problem for them. :dizzy:

I was using my vehicle as an example of people putting to use equipment others regard as basically used for show.

Matt the saw has been running well and getting a fair amount of use. The last couple of days though it's been running a little strange and I haven't been able to tune it out. It has been consuming the fuel like you wouldn't believe, alot more than the 371, so will have to strip the carb and have a look see. As much as it doesn't have the go of the 371, it's still a really nice saw to use.

R M William stickers??? Yeah right!!!

like i said 2 ton tandem tradies trailer + 33's + pretty much all stop start driving trips less that 15mins = major pain at servos

It still seems very excessive.
Give Joel a call at 4B Fabrications | Custom fabrication for your 4x4 and have a chat regarding tuning and your clutch. He used to race patrols and is a wizard with all things 4wd and runs the dyno here.

Billy, don't have any experience with the Nissan clutches but will have soon, our GU has passed 365,000km and it's still original.
I'm waiting for the 'HELP' phone call from SWMBO everytime she drives out the gate.......

and how about the 125 race just run ?

A tie/dead heat for first, they couldn't separate them even after looking at the photo's ! :msp_ohmy:

I wouldn't stress with plenty of life still left in the ol' girl.

Three great races.

The rads definitely shagged though.
She rang this morning from near Wollongong (roughly 5.5hours away) saying that there was a spray pattern across the battery again and the overflow bottle was showing more than normal. Of course the system was down about 1l :censored:

I'm sitting here about to fire off emails to PWR, ARE and Aussie Desert coolers for quotes.......

[edit] BTW, talking tyres I'm only a #####, I only have 10" wide 33's on mine.......

Oh yeah the radiator! Forgot about that. 5.5 hrs away? Yuck.
Mines 315,000 and clean as a whistle. The fan shroud has little teats that like to rub through the cores so they usually need to be ground down. :bang:

I know it shouldn't be about looks, but the GU looks disgusting with 265's!
You must have a bigger #### than me!

The early GU's have a different front crossmember and radiator, it's not as deep and much wider and they all seem to overheat...

The GU has the original 265/75's (32's) but the Defender has 255/85's instead of 7.50/16's or 235/85's and are a genuine 33.3" tall when new, yet slip onto the stock rim.
It looks legal :D

Awe come on Al, this doesn't excuse the fact you need a ladder to get in your lifted Troll :D

Oh, and you need wanky lights, an RM Williams sticker across the back window, and CAT or Kenworth mudflaps. Don't ask why, you just do...

Oh and an upgraded alternator to run all the lights...

Nope, only a couple of old Cibie's converted to HID (is that allowed?). No ladder needed ( I carry the ladder for work). :msp_thumbsup: Now with the odd sticker I may be guilty-

Wasn't aware of the different front crossmember and radiator. Mine is the 2000 series 2. Yeah it can get a touch warm at times in summer.

Ours is an '01.

If you look at the later models the front crossmember dips down in the middle severely and the rad is narrower but much deeper than ours. It's unusual to hear of them overheating.

Looks like you're running the same rubber as me.

When i said to Mrs Rick to come and look at my new tyres she knew something was up. The eye roll when she read the sidewall was a good un :D
