Looks like you're running the same rubber as me.

When i said to Mrs Rick to come and look at my new tyres she knew something was up. The eye roll when she read the sidewall was a good un :D

Mine are only a few days old.

I couldn't justify $418 for KM2's. Next time from the States I hear is the go.

I don't get it! The 32's on the GQ have got "bighorn" on them as well. I thought it would have been reserved for 35's and bigger? :D

I rate the bighorn pretty highly, great value and a good tough tyre. I did about 70,000km on my set of 5 33''s before I sold them with 9mm tread still to move upto my Toyo 35''s.

I've ran them for a few years now after running BFG's.

The sidewall flexes a bit more so need more pressure on road, but otherwise they've been fine.
Not sure how far they'll go but I'm lucky to get 50,000km out any tyre anyway.

A few of blokes on the Landy board have bought through 'Tire Rack' in the US and saved several hundred $.

Others have stated the sidewalls were only two ply (Horns). I needed more than this as I've had plenty of sidewalls staked with the BFG's with three ply. As it turns out, these "horns" have 3 ply walls and 6 tread (one more in the tread than the BFG's). I felt the side walls of both tyres will next to each other off the rims and the BFG's had nothing on the Horns. This is different to what others have said about previous Horns. the 32" I have here is only 2 ply walls.

I got over 70,000klm's out of my last BFG muddies with 65,000 plus from the previous set. I don't expect to get the same mileage out the horns.

Just in regards to overheating. The turboed Surf engine I have in the Lux was constantly running hot. I did some research and found that Toyota had placed a zener diode in the temp guage to keep the needle in the middle of the range. Once the actual water temp got above 95C, the needle would jump as the zener started conducting. I understand that Toyota tweaked the temp guages on a number of vehicles, including Landcruisers.

Fixed the guage with a resistor instead of the zener. Then I noticed that the engine ran in the high range all the time. Ding, the old higher temperature EPA approved thermostat gambit! Diesels run about optimum when around 88C - that's when this POS thermostat started to open. Replaced it with one that started opening at 82C and that had a bigger opening and the temps stabilized at around 90C.

Replaced the 3 core radiator with a 4 core. Then adapted a Surf shroud for the radiator to run a bigger Landcruiser fan. The fan clutch was also in need of a rebuild, so a bit of research turned up the 10,000 wt fluid for the clutch that replaced the stock 6,000 wt fluid. The extra resistance helps to turn the bigger fan.

Even with the truck loaded down and pulling a full trailer up a long hill in 40+C weather won't push the guage over 95C.

Just thought I'd throw this info out there for any of you guys with temp issues, maybe something I did would give you a heads-up on a possible fix.

Yeah well I know for a fact my fan coupling needs a fluid change. I have some toyota fluid ready for the job. The shroud needs some work for sure also as it's not complete and the foam around the radiator etc needs attention. Need to get my butt into gear before summer.

Re the Maxxis 762's, yep, some are 3 ply sidewall, in the catalogue they are marked with an asterisk.

Thanks Terry, I don't trust the Patrol thermometer either, been meaning to install a mechanical one but haven't got around to it yet (that was the fix in the Defender)

Al, well worth replacing and overfilling the fan clutch fluid, did that quite a few years ago.

After talking to the local NRMA mechanic I'm pulling the rad tomorrow and sending it away to see if the split can be brazed. If a had the machine to unfold and fold the crimps I'd have a crack at doing it myself, although it's hard to get the aluminium really clean for the flux to work and the hard braze to take.
Aluminium brazing is a cow, you can't let any flame hit the flux or work area or it oxidises instantly, all heat in the work has to be by conduction. I've tried fixing a few aluminium air con condensers in tractors for a bit of practice :bang:

[chainsaw content] Ran into one of the local firewood cutters in town who runs a 681 Solo. (better saw than a 660 he claims :D) One of his mates is supposedly taking B-Double loads to Sydney, although I didn't think B-Doubles were allowed into the big smoke ?

Generally no I wasn't taking it personal, but I will defend even when it's not directed at me. I basically agree with you but I do see the benefits of "larger" mods and recognize there small drawbacks. You do find yourself constantly defending yourself for your choice in tyres, lifts, vehicles etc though. I have never been able to understand why it's such a problem for others if someone else runs these mods! Seems to be a real problem for them. :dizzy:

You assumed I was trying to or did offend someone...as for constantly defending myself, give me a break...just so you know my truck isnt stock and I do have a set of 34's..................

the whole point I was making re LSD and suspension would not matter for brand, its basic engineering...my trucks lifted suspension has the same +'s and -'s as any brand....but due to the way it(oem) was designed it suffers a little less. Dont take that as a brand thing..............I would still like to change things but QLD laws prevent it

partical blocks are temp for glue up, blue tape is so epoxy doest stick to them and can be used again...same with clad wrap on the temp bench

Sika and epoxy hold this up....not a single nail or screw used so far

these are flooring boards that have been glued together then machined to create a solid look to "wrap" the steel PFC's that support the landing and lift platform...it will be just these on the sides and 48mm thick glass for the walk platform....not a bad little reno, $2 million so far

I went to Roseworthy Agricultural College Rick. The amount of crap those tools used to hang off of HZ utes still haunts me, even home made bull bars using railway iron and daddy's welder...

Hey Matt, what era did you go through rac? They were fun times (mostly). I missed the place for quite a while after I left and joined the real world! Concur on some of the utes being over the top, but still short of some of the monstrosities seen at b&s's in west and central nsw

So that's the view I missed out on last week by driving around the mountain instead of up and over :D

yeah Rick, the phone camera doesnt do it justice....but driving up and over is ok if no trailer on, I recored up the easy side, 500c-92c-40kmph-3rd gear, 12,13 and 15% grades

I had to share this little nugget from today's 'Sydney Morning Herald' on the burgeoning firewood market in the city...

''We supply ironwood and box gum, which burns very well and produces very little smoke,'' he said. The wood was collected mainly off cleared land in Queensland and NSW.

WTF ? :msp_ohmy:

I started to do sums on how much it would cost to take a few truckloads after reading this.....

A tonne cost about $350 delivered to the home and about $320 if picked up,

from here Families feel the squeeze and opt for old-fashioned wood fires over gas

Don't mean to rub it in guys, but that is very close to the view I get from my chair in the shed (no tree, but more pasture in front of the ocean). I enjoy going out there and having a cup of tea, cracking some macadamia nuts and watching the sun come up. I'm sitting at 2,000 ft (600 metres) just inland from the ocean, so I get a great view.

The way the radiator is in the Patrol there was no way i was going the steep road when i saw the gradient listed on the road sign.
