Speeking for my self here, i have bought a lot of saws new over the years and i only get the saw with its standard items. (booklets and tool kit).
My buying power gets the saws at a very competative price for the trade (timber industry) i am part of and i know what they are worth to the trade and to the general comsumer or part time user.
I don't expect anything else thrown in to sweeten the deal or make it a better deal than joe (opersition saw dealer) and i don't worry about ringing round all the dealers trying to save $20.00 on a sale. ( dealers talk to one another and pass on bad costomer details)
These days dealers are trying to survive also in tough times and they don't sell near as many pro saws (used to be their bread and butter) like they used to. By bread and butter i mean, when large amounts of pro saws were sold (any brand) up till the mid 00's,those saws come back to the dealer for repair and serviceing at regular intervils and dealers depended on that to help with their turnover. the smaller consumer saws were of coarse also sold and serviced but not as often and the money earned from consumer saws not as forthcoming as the pro gear.
My point mate is, you get what you pay for and there is no such thing as a free lunch, if by chance a dealer gives something for free to a customer (like a new chain or pack of files) somewhere they usualy recoup that free gift.
Some dealers are rogues for sure but if you look carefully at their clientel, you should notice if the timber industry professionals deal with him or someone else.
My own local husky dealer will do anything possable for me regarding husky saws, because he knows i will be tradeing with him for years to come.
Another thing killing the local dealers slowly is the new generation of internett sales and cheap overseas imports from the likes of china which takes more work/ sales from the local guy.

No offence to anyone here, just my opinion and its a free country so internet sales are legal and here to stay.

Hang the black one on the wall bobby senior, go with the other one and tuck it in close as possable above the side cover. brace it somewhere to stop the wobble. Looks the part tho.

Ideally dealers should discount saw chaps and safety gear eg helmets with a saw purchase.
I got a tip top sandvick screw driver given to me by Ace saw bloke in circa 1983. I never lost it and still got it in me tool box and never forget the goodwill of the simple helping hand

Well that small polished Aluminium pipe is a 100cc pipe off a Mac i have the same thing in steel but with a centre section about a couple of inches long would have
thought the smaller pipe would have choked the saw anyway i have 3 different pipes i can try we'll see .............. that polished pipe is extremely light in weight.

yea, i should have explained it better. i am th same, i see a product i want and buy it and if they offer to throw some thing in ,well all good
i noticed that stihl have the bonus on deals with spending in the shop

Despite being one of those internet guys Neil I agree. Our average gross margin to win quoted business over $10k at work (agricultural supplies) is less than 3% (excluding interest on debtors etc), yet growers think we are the only ones making money. I can assure you that one single 500 acre vineyard made a MUCH larger net profit that our whole store last year.
The biggest problem is with shows like A Current Affair etc running wank segments on how to get discounts and screw suppliers. They have given the general population the idea that every single retailer is making massive margins and trying to shaft them. My missus works in electrical retail and if they hadn't diversified into other areas and had the warranty repair side they'd have been broke years ago. We have stores shutting left, right, and centre in our area although I will admit that some of those were destined for failure well before any global financial crisis etc etc.
Of course there are some retailers attempting to screw everyone but they don't keep their doors open for long as everybody is too price savvy nowadays.
There is just plain old business and then there is good business. I've had issues with certain customers in the past that whine with everything they receive and are just generally hard work. When they rang up for something else I ignored their calls until they left me alone. By the way it wasn't any AS guys but eBay customers who became consistent pains in the arse.
These sorts of floggers are why I have not advertised my business very actively in my home town. Being an after hours setup at I don't want people thinking they can come and go as they please at any hour of the day and night.
We had one winegrape grower a few years ago that I had put a lot of time into to get his vineyard viable. Then come June 30 he quoted everything and asked if we'd drop our price as we were dearer than our opposition. He completely forgot about the hours and hours of help I'd given him (normally charged at $150/hr) so we requoted him alright. We added 10% more than our last quote and we haven't seen him since :D

good straight up responce Matt,,,
my buisness is the same as our proffit margin is low, but its a liveing and thats all i can expect in these trying times.
I guess i like to stick up for the local blokes who trade honestly in their communities, in an increasingly harder enviroment.
I personaly know both saw dealers in our town, both are good blokes and both say after rent and wages ect, theres not a lot left but the door is open and tomorrow is another day.
I hear you on the ebay clients, i would think a lot are just hopeing the seller needs to sell and will except a loss to sell or just plain being a waste of time and pain in the a-s.
Internett tradeing is the future for sure, as is seen on tv more and more, salesmen are being replaced by employee's in vests driveing little forklifts filling online orders from a wharehouse.

Hi everybody, back from the bush.

I go to a block of land where there is a shed, which is quite lavishly appointed. However in the fire dept they were sadly lacking The weather forecast for the weekend overnight was below zero. How much wood did they have. None! (Probably because they blew up their only chainsaw, and now its getting replaced with a plastic clamshell)

So I decided to be selfish, and pulled out the MS441CM :) Only needed to run a tank in order to have enough for a night. The saw went very well, and people on the other side of the ridge about 1km away could hear it in full song.

I need to adjust the oiler, ran out of oil just before I ran out of fuel. Could have won some money off the saw, I had a few people say it wouldnt start. It started 2 pulls from cold and 1 pull when hot! Should have put money or beers on the bet.

One very happy camper, literally.

Graham

I can recall a time now quite a few years ago when i did a bush run selling to bushmen and sawmillers it was they who wanted everything at rock bottom prices and would buy direct from the importers to cut our throat so you can see why i didn't bother chasing them to much after all who had to do the miles not them. Times have changed and its everyman for himself watch a bit more TV and even the big retailers are hurting cant go on adding more millions to there bottom line ...............

Graham99 should be happy at least he has a saw after loosing what he had enjoy it and be satisfied freebies well get what's given and be happy.

Glad to hear it Peter, now go and cut some wood already! :msp_biggrin:

The Stihl 2 stroke oil is fine there are high performance synthetic oils out there which some of us use, but its all down to personal preference I would say.

Bar oil brand doesn't really matter, as long as its a bit sticky and clean. The stihl stuff can get expensive if you use a lot.

mate, caltex bar and chain oil is good and cheaper than stihl,i use the stihl mix oil and love it,i even run all my stuff at 25:1 ,............common fellas let me have it.
