Hey Matt, while you are around what did you think of this file guide? I remember you tried the stihl version.

Bailey's - Pferd CS-X Chain Sharp Filing Guide - 7/32"

I've got both a Stihl 13/64" version and one for .325" - Stihl don't make one in 7/32" but I reckon the Pferd version would be worth a look.
The .325" one is excellent and I've only used it on Carlton K3C semi chisel so far on my MS241C. It doesn't quite get deep enough into the gullet for my tastes but I can tell you one thing the angles etc it leaves cut really well. The main bonus is the depth guage function though but for general filing I'd still rather use a normal guide.
The biggest value I see with these things is when you have forgotten to lower the depth guages properly as it kills two birds with one stone and saves a LOT of time.
The 13/64" version is useless on anything but Stihl 3/8" chain as it gets nowhere near deep enough - it does not work on Carlton or Windsor chain. It's better than not filing at all but only by a small amount. I've found the same thing with the Stihl 7/32" file guides designed for .404" as well. They just don't seem to get deep enough on other brands of 3/8" chain and don't leave enough hook. I do run some Stihl 3/8" RMC and RSC chain but haven't tried it on those yet.
I've run Oregon, Stihl, and Vallorbe file guides and the Vallorbes are the best in 7/32" in my opinion but I'm sure opinions vary depending on how you file.
As you've probably noticed Stihl's 3/8" chain looks to have a slightly smaller cutter than Oregon/Carlton/Windsor etc which I assume is why their 3/8" specific 13/64" guides don't perform well on other brands of chain.

Thanks for the reply Matt, I shall order one. I plan on using it mainly for setting the depth gauge when I need too.

I agree re the Vallorbe guide, but IMHO if you are going to use a guide the Husky roller guide can't be beat.

On Stihl chain you must use a 7/32" file as it gives it a hell of a hook, but geez you should see the chips fly.

I've been using some Stihl full chisel for the last week on some crappy timber, (it's a sacrificial loop) sharpened with one of the husky guides (can't recall which one I'm even using ATM, there's two versions :monkey) and it's flying through it and lasting as long as my semi loops :msp_confused:

It's a pity that Stihl don't run a 7/32" version in Australia (yet) as the price of the Pferd plus freight is hideous. I'd be 99.99999% sure that Pferd make the Stihl ones anyway. OK make that 100% :)

Yeah Pferd do make the Stihl ones. I'll see what I can do about the shipping.

Yeah I'd like to try the Husky one but happy with the Vallorbe for now - when that wears out I'll hunt around for a Husky guide. Also I've never sharpened Stihl chain with a 13/64" file and have always used a 7/32" setup. RMC and RSC cuts way better after a 7/32" raping than the out of the box chain :)

I have found the same thing Matt with the 7/32'' files on Stihl chains.

That's what i love about you Matt, subtlety :D

Whoops. I was going to use the words honing or reaming Rick but with us all being less sophisticated Aussies I thought some confusion might set in ;)
Arse ripping was 2nd on my list after raping.

EDIT: For those that missed my previous post I am talking about filing chains.

Thanks for that review MCW I'd been lookin at them jiggers for awhile and wus unsure how they stacked up or even worked as a chain sharpener.
A wee bit complex for my simple needs but I am a slow adopter of new fangle gear even if proven better, may drive me nuts not being able to feel the file and gullet out the tooth face. A file on old broom stick a flat file in ma hands works ok for me.

Got call tonite er um,, your chipper fell of my utes tow ball,,, Oh you mean you failed to hook it right and it fell off the tow hitch,, any damage? Nope slow speed over a road hump & chains held well so all ok very lucky. Dang, I just spent a hour rewiring the 7 pin plug as last bloke pulled it apart by forgetting to unplug before take off,, shhst its like havin staff again, that phone rings and its never good news just the er um hey boss I er ....

PS I have a system to stop unhitched drive offs a split pin is last used as memory prompt and safe fit to go checker, if it dont go in the ball an't locked down. Was this in place tonite,,,? no let another bloke hitch it but the driver did not check it ,,,this mistake has caught many, even my self. Always check yer load and hitch don't trust any other, your the driver and your responsible.

Dads day Sunday MCW sport hope you get the 1st timer reward as deserved and all others a least a hug n smile I,m getting a ebay watch and a cheapie IR gen 1 night vision 5x binoc

I'm off to snow should be a blast a nice dump and perfect conditions
