mate, i would just watch your stock screws, if 1 falls out replace it with a bigger self tapper. If you get to the point where screws wont hold any more,i would weld the plate onto the muffler.

The problem with bolts, if the nut comes off the bolt it may get sucked into the piston before being spat out through that pipe. At least with screws they just come loose and fall out.

yeah righto mate, with the bolts i was gonna slip them threw from the inside out, having the nut on the outside and bur the bolt over so the nut cant come off if it came loose un-knowingly, but yeah ill run with the screws for now, seems to be very little Vib happening from the saw/mill, its a heavy built MIll, zero's out any vibs really ....thanks mate.

On another note Neil, do you still fell all the timber for your mill yourself? Just wondering what sort of regulations are being placed on what timber you use or fell?
I'll catch up with you next week anyway but thought I'd get in early :)
41°C here so sort of in and out of the house today and playing on AS when I come in. The neighbour wanted a few trees knocked over but I can think of better things to do in this weather and it involves an alcoholic apple product in a 375ml brown bottle...

Self tappers hang on pretty well mate. As far as mill vibrations I've always found it's the chain if I have any :(
You should get Neil to race mod your 3120, you'll pump out 3 times as many slabs :D

Hmmmm, looks like something that I might do  pita getting the tube unstuck on the inside, the outer bit was easy with the dremel.

Will
the inside wasn't budging ,i just cut the back out where the tube was spot welded & welded a new plate back in. fiddly to weld that thin sheet metal with mig tho

Are you going to get to the Bulehdublahblah Show Will?

Want to Matt, but budget restrictions coming up to the silly season have stopped me:msp_angry: Next year I might have to go tho if plans work out for the boys down there ;) Next race for me is Stanthorpe Q in jan.

I have been able to break the inside bit by wiggling the tube back and forth after I got the outside bit freed up. Certainly helps the big girls breath a bit

you got me thinking Neil, thats dangerous for the wallet mate.. .might use these instead of them stock screws, before welding ....im shore they'll hold up? what say you bro ?

nylon lockers might melt, but ill use some high temp locktite

WM - From and engineering point of view - I would avoid using the 316 grade stainless fasteners, and go with a decent 8.8 or 10.9 grade fastener. The 316 fasteners are actually low strength, and may end up breaking in this application.
A good quality Nickel anti seize is the ticket as well. You can also purchase lock nuts which are not of the Nylock variety for high temp applications.

Regards,

Chris.

thanks chris. i was hoping to get some High tensile bolts in M5, but they had everything but M5 in High tensile, they only had M5 in stainless at the service station, limited supply in Moruya on weekends i guess. Should be able to get M5 High tensile (champion brand) tomorrow from the auto shop if i go that route ....think i'll run it for now with the stock screws & see how they hold up while milling.

cheers

No matt, i have moved on from full time falling to full time milling with some falling when needed. I am very fortunite to have the property owner skilled enough to log his own place for my operation.
Regarding regulations, we follow a approved harvesting plan, (PNF or private Native Forestry) which is audited by the dept of Environment,Climate Change & Water , Northern NSW.
However i have 3 more private forestry blocks under approved 15 year agreements in which i will be logging myself.

Thanks Neil. I wasn't sure if you just dropped trees as you needed them for the mill or whether you got other guys to supply the wood. I know in southern NSW the forestry guys have clamped down hard on Redgum firewood fallers on the floodplains which I think is a good idea. There have been a lot of dodgey operators with firewood. Just recently they have been opening up areas in national park around Mildura (Victoria) for mum and dad type firewood cutters. Unfortunately the bigger operators have snuck in there raping and pillaging and the mums and dads are missing out.

Yep. I sold an aftermarket 395XP muffler to a full time firewood cutter in NSW that had a spot welded baffle come loose, work it's way into the exhaust port, and destroyed the Mahle piston and cylinder. I gave the guy a new replacement BB kit with Caber rings but sh*t I felt like a bastard...

Bugger,,,

I guess that comes with the territory of aftermarket parts, a shame the parts sometimes are not made to the same level as the originals.
My question to you now as an importer of this type of product,,,,
Were you compensated by your over seas suplier in lou of your compensation to your client to make it right again.

No Neil I wasn't compensated by my supplier but did get the mufflers for free. Unfortunately my supplier is a middle man and has got no real clout with his suppliers. I have dealt directly with a few manufacturers and they seem keen to assist if you have any issues but only in replacements or discounts. Luckily this muffler issue is the only thing I've sold that has damaged a customer's saw. I have had one MS460 BB kit hook a ring and I replaced that kit. Early on I gave a lot of P&C's away to other members to test for me (as I didn't have that model saw) and apart from one issue with 1st gen MS660 kits and some dodgey port bevelling on some 372XP BB kits (my supplier has since swapped manufacturers) I've been pretty happy overall.
The biggest issue I've had though is that I've done a lot of trial work on P&C's etc etc at my own expense and all of my feedback is then passed onto other potential customers so they don't have the problems I've had. In fact my supplier contacted another Australian AS member here and told him all about what kits were good and bad but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
