Big bars there men, why oh why is a 60'' nessessary today, unless its for a rail mill.

36'' was our standard every day bar for old growth log falling coupled to a 3120. I do still have 2 30'' oregon bars welded together that i used maybe once or twice a year for that monster tallow wood which had hips too big for a 36''.
Today i run a 36'' for docking packs of sawn timber off, the 36 covers the whole pack nicely and its driven by a work 395.
Our standard log falling bars today are 28'' and 30'', no one uses longer unless nessessary, all the remaining old growth timber has been locked up by the government.

Some of us just like a spare 40" hanging out the other side Neil
I suppose it's a bit like AS members who want an 880/3120 but will never cut a tree more than 3' wide :)
There are still some pretty big trees floating around in domestic situations and on private property though old son. There are also some very large downed logs about the place. My 60" probably only gets run once or twice a year. It came in handy in Tassie a while back cutting some big pine logs as there was no way known I wanted to get on the downhill side of some of these logs. Might have ended up "Flat Matt". With an "L" Neil. I already know I could lose a few kg.

True, there are trees which are very large in domestic and PP. In actual fact, some multible leader big butted trees growing in town are probably more dangerouse than the old growth forest logs.
I have seen some hack jobs by self appointed experts and it is scarey to read just what they did in the task at hand. I have also took notice to other jobs in difficult situalions (buildings ect) where the boys have done a marvelouse job in assessing the risks and applying the best safe method to get it done.
Some town jobs would frighten me, no risk.

a few pics from one of the local lucas miller guys from here, plenty of big salvage logs still around Neil

I agree on the hack jobs mate. Unfortunately some of these hack jobs are actually from registered tree businesses. Even a couple of arborists in Melbourne were telling me that one of the main industry insurance mobs are dishing out full house insurance packages to guys that don't even have one single tree or chainsaw qualification.
As far as felling though you're right on the long bar comment. 60"+ bars are only for those absolute monsters that rarely pop up anymore. Well actually even bars over 42" are generally not needed. You only have to look at some of the monsters in the US that were dropped just using 42" bars.

I fell a blue gum very simular to that log only a month or so ago on top of a flat top platau near armidale for a mates friend, i was given the log but am guessing i will never see it again.

May i ask how that log ended up in that possition after falling.

its called a dead Aussie walking flush ground cut, no worries mate '#### the scarf' lol. once she moves a whisker 'Bloody RUNNNNnnnnn!' :msp_scared:

Looks like he put the backcut in flush with the bottom scarf cut and basically zero scarf removed giving the log a flush cut, probably trying to get as much stump as possible for his lucas mill. The guys a tool, Enough said.

Wishing each and everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

May Santa be good all girls and boys and big men. May toys be loud, fast and unstoppable (don't buy from China). Talk to you next year.

MERRY FARTMAS GENTS AND HAVE A GOOD NEW YEARS TOO. MAY SANTA BRING YOU ALL A NEW 550XP. Oh hang on, that's what I'm getting...

Yep. He probably thinks he knows what he's doing as well. I had to laugh on another AS thread where a guy dropped a heavy leaner, had a massive barber chair, yet still thought it was felled correctly because nobody was hurt.

Meerry christmas fellas and familys.

With the Christmas Holiday Season upon us I would like to share a personal
experience with my friends about drinking and driving. We all know of
someone who has had brushes with the authorities on the way home after a
"social session" out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out for an early
Christmas celebration with friends and had several cocktails followed by
some rather nice red wine. Feeling rather jolly, I still had the sense to
know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that
I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home
there was a police road block but since it was a cab, they waved it past. I
arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had
never driven a cab before. I don't remember where I got it and now that
it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it!:msp_biggrin:

Listened to it twice.
