Thanks Rick, Looks like the grinding wheel has just chopped a big hollow in the chain where the file goes.
Would I be best to file the teeth back flat and resart with the file to get the setting right
Regards Peter

question for the 2 stroke experts

i know its not a saw but got a question on my kart, its got a prd fireball water cooled reed valve motor. pulled the jug to check the piston/ring and discovered its had a pretty good failure in the past, looks like the previous owner has blown it damaging a transfer and scoring the bore, but instead or replacing the jug he has just honed it to take the biggest std o/size (54.28mm) piston slapped it together and sold it. thankfully the scoring/transfer damage is mostly below the lowest point the ring reaches otherwise im sure i would have blown it up long before now

so the options,

option 1 is to just waste the best part of 1k replacing everything with std parts kinda boring....

option 2 ive found the piston from a 79 suzuki ts125 which is std in 56mm and has a matching pin size of 14mm. the issues are that its compression height is about 2.7mm higher than the prd piston and its 6ish mm longer overall, also its a twin ring piston.given the jug has a fairly thick steel sleeve assuming i raise the whole jug the 2.7mm and just machine the 6mm off the bottom of the skirt then i should be good to just bore it out for the bigger piston and hopefully gain a few ponies?

heres a pic of the jug showing the scoring

Jut found this.

PRD Fireball - Technical Specifications
PRD Fireball Engine « RLV, Inc.

I wrote a whole bunch of stuff but wiped it all so what the hell, do it and give it a go.

Those engines are good for 28-29HP in stock/restricted form which isn't too bloody shabby at all.
Back when I was young and silly racing karts in the mid-late eighties a full house 100cc International engine only had about that HP but up near 20,000RPM.
The karts were a bucket load lighter though, none of that new fangled water cooling or clutches :D

I knew Delly (as in Peter R Dell, that's what PRD stood for) pretty well too.
He sponsored a mate and nearly sponsored me until I stacked a prototype kart I'd been lent for a major meeting at Oran Park :monkey:
It handed like #### and I was fed a wheel !
Upside down I went in front of an entire field of screaming karts in the second corner :dizzy:

yep thats the motor in question, only looking at the big bore route as i dont race or have any intention to and can get a piston via ebay for about $80 delivered. and yep its a fair bit heavier than my mates same chassis with a speical (also aka illegal) 100s

thinking i might put the number 135 on it and see if any of the rotax boys twig when it passes them down the straight

for the sake of about $100 i figure its worth a go

Normally you just file away and the tooth will match up to the file pretty quickly.

If you can post up a photo I reckon it will confirm that ;)

Remember it's the top and side plates that do the cutting and lifting of the chip, the gullet just gives clearance for the chip to move out of the way.

Basically the sideplate severs the fibre and the top plate lifts the chip up and away.
The depth of cut of the sideplate and top plate is dictated by the height of the depth gauge which with a new chain is only around .025" lower than the top plate.

I forgot to type when I knew Delly it was in the late eighties, he was still racing too then.
I thought he was so bloody old, he might have nearly been forty !

If I wasn't driving he'd request me as his chief spannerman/mechanic at big meetings. Never got paid mind you :D

Amazing to think he's expanded and built up an international kart engine empire.
I remember when he was first getting some bits made in Taipei, they were exact copies of Italian stuff (and Tillo carbies !) and the quality was bloody brilliant.
He said at the time they could make anything as well as anyone else in the world.

File guide and stones, where to buy

Hi Guys,
After finding out my chains need a lot of work to get them right and I was using 5.2mm file, im now thinking of going 5.5mm file and diamond stone for my 12v grinder
Could some one tell me the best place to buy them from for a good price
Regards Peter

i did notice s few similarities between the fireball and parilla lepoard rl. also some of the prd aircooled motors look alot like older parillas

Yep, Peter was an IAME importer, I ran an SS20 Parilla, my mate ran a TT65 then TT75 in Junior International, there were some strong similarities with the early PRD's :D

How many files are you after ?

Most of us tend to buy by the box (and multiple boxes at that) and remember you will need depth gauge files too.

The best place for me and most of the blokes here is Matt/MCW/Riverland Sawchain Supply.
Service second to none, great prices and all round good bloke, regardless of what I may otherwise type from time to time :monkey:

You'll see his contact details on one of his posts a little further back in this thread.

WOW, Rick, did Matt force you to say that, bloody standover internet tough guys.......

Actually Peter,,,, he is dead right, MCW is the go for all your consumerable items.
Just don't ask him for some of his special secret chain, he gets a bit touchy on that subject.

Message sent Peter.

Yeah, the big fella has powers of persuasion I'd rather not reveal, or at least talk of ATM.

Lets just say the conversation included words like "Bubba" "cell" and "Bubba's b!#&h" :help:

All I had to do was mention baby oil and chocolate sprinkles Rick and you've been a loyal customer ever since.

Well thanks for the $10.00, and the kit as well, bloody lovely.

I heard a little rumer that Gmax received a pristine 166 sachs dolmar, I also hear its only missing a few bits, like bar, chain and ......................................................................................................motor.

Yes so true, he's got my respect,,,, earned the day he whipped out that 200t and said, would you like a cut.....
