I think Ruger No.1's are some of the most gorgeous rifles out there. I had one for a bit in 6mm Remington for medium varmint. 55-75 grain bullets for prarie dogs and 95 for deer. Accurate with both. Eventually sold it coz I just was doing too high a volume shooting at the time to not use a bolt action. Here's one of the latter versions of benchrest rifles I had - A Lightforce 12-42 or sumfin silly like that X 56mm Obj(before they became Nightforce), 243Ackley Improved firing 70 grain noslers BT's at 4200 fps or so. Long barrel both for ballistics and to reset it after the throat burns out in 1,000 rounds or so ...

deye223, when you say range I take it you mean distance, and not a particular location? TBH, im open to suggestions. Im a newb. I have shot trap a couple of times and thats about it.
sorry for the delay i just got out of hospital , now if it were me and i was going to take on range shooting with a 223rem i would get at least a 1:9 twist so i can use the 69 match pills out to 800yards .
trust me you will be shooting out that far and further as you get better plus it depends on the what they have set up for one day will be 300 and another day it will be 700 there is a lot more to it but if i were you i you just go along to the range and have a good look , you don't need all the bells and whisles comp guns but it is good to have one , the first time i shot f class just as a looker i beat a couple of custom guns and it raised some eye brows.
so all the best with it mate and have a look and a go it's fun and you will learn heaps and you will not stop learning

cheers D

I suppose what Darren is asking is what do you intend to shoot. For example what competitions does your local range have? No point telling you to get a 1:14 twist barrel if you are shooting longer ranges and need VLD projectiles. For example our local SSAA range only goes out to 300m. The SARA range goes out to 600m. Big difference in what twist rate and even calibre you need.

Yeah it's funny that. I shot a 300m egg shoot at the Little Para range in Adelaide a while back and came second with a stock Win 70 in .22/250 and a badly pitted bore. A full on F class rifle in 6mm/.284 beat me hitting 14 out of 15 eggs. I hit 7 out of 15. A heap of heavy varmint bench rest rifles in 6mm PPC didn't hit a single egg as they weren't used to shooting at that range.

yes the rifle dose not make the marksman (but it helps when he has the skills)

hope your OK Darren,i like that clip of old mate, just proves theres dumber people out there than me...........bit like the clown that stepps up into a ceiling fan going top cog.....................got to be on something real good to do that schit

inserts referrence to Jim Beam can drinkers…..

Matt, Id say my local range would be Belmont. From what I can tell it has 300m and 1000m

Morning Serg,,,,
You would be proud of me after my latest find yesterday at a saw race.
I picked up a lovely complete 2100 in very good order, even the dust looks clean on it and it goes. They are still around and its one of the best examples I have seen.
No picks but be assured I am happy to include it into my collection. Even the chain brake is straight and works.

Well done Neil. Yes those chain brakes are commonly bent as you know. Sounds like it will polish up very nicely. How did you fair at the races?

You probably know this trick: If pulling the oiler right down to give a thorough clean, you need to remove the drive shaft. Do NOT remove the little white plastic end cap. That stuffs them and you cant not buy them. A little heat around the bush end and some light tapping and the shaft should fall out.

More hard rubbish! a friend dropped off a Stihl FS 65, just needed a fuel cap and a carb pump diaphragm (luckily a walbro)
Comp is a 160 psi, runs good now, the guy who dropped it off bought himself a new straight shaft McCulloch (Chinese) brushcutter, I know which one I would rather have :)
