So... reading some of the Oz gun laws of 1996, if guns are not supposed to be used for self defense in Oz, what are you supposed to use for self defense? A baseball bat? Throwing knives? A pool cue? Foul words? Lawyers? Seems that all the guns that I have except my Enfield .303 and Marlin 336 are not legal down undah.

I have a concealed carry permit in 20 some odd states in the US. Mainly so that I can carry a handgun in the glove box my truck and so I can open carry on my property here w/o any legal issues. My favorite long gun is my .30-30 lever action Marlin 336. I used to put sheep down with that and I have hunted deer with it. My AR-15 was pretty worthless for those tasks, but they are the guns that they want to limit the most here. I had a special permit for my semi-auto AR-15 in California, and my semi-auto model 1911 .45 was classified as a 'junk gun' there because it was a Norenco. Here in Oregon they are just a long gun and a hand gun, and no one cares. Though the AR is getting more anti-gun attention here.

In the most western states, you can escalate to the use of lethal force with guns when threatened or when someone is attempting mayhem or committing a felony. You also do not need to retreat from your own property to avoid conflict.

I'd go the Sako mate. If you are buying a Remington make sure you can access a borescope to check the barrel. Remington barrels are either mickey mouse or crap. There doesn't seem to be any in the middle unfortunately. For 4k though you could buy a cheaper Remington and trick it out pretty well through a decent gunsmith (if you could be bothered?). Nothing wrong with the actions at all but there consistency is all over the shop. Darren got a good one and obviously knows how to load and shoot but if you get a bad one you'll regret it big time and there are plenty of bad ones around. My 700BDL-DM shoots well now but only after a new barrel, bedding and floating, and a trigger job. Out of the box it was a waste of space. The factory barrel was a disaster.
If you don't plan on customising anything in the future I'd go a Sako anyday as they all shoot well and I've heard of very few problems. They did have a recall a while back on the fluted barrels in .300 Winchester Magnum only (I think?) but all fixed. Don't spend anything under a grand on a scope - there are some reasonable cheaper scopes but putting a cheap scope on a $2k+ rifle is like putting retreads on a Ferrari. In saying that thought the Bushnell Elites are a cracker scope and they are under a grand. They used to be called Bausch & Lomb - I own a 4-16 x 50 Elite 4000 and it's optics and tracking are as good as any scope I've looked through including Leupolds, Schmidt & Bender, Kahles etc. They run Jap made lenses just like the Leupolds.
If you get a Sako make sure you get the Optilok mounts - they are spendy but awesome.

As far as Raytrade and Remingtons go you may as well not have a warranty. Unless it's something terminal they sure as hell won't honour it if something goes wrong.

What Matt said.

Id go the Sako or Savage.

It is a different world over here. I own a Norenco in 22 mag, it had a horrible stock (which I thinned down and oiled) and shoots ok.

ON a different note,,,, I wanted to give Waynes china 70 a run dismorning,,, its a b**ch to start on cold mornings with yet another starter cord broken. I will get her going later today.

At the end of the day, gun violence is a rarity here (regardless of what's reported in certain media outlets) and in my near 50 odd years on this planet the only times I've been in fear of my life has been through my own recklessness in a car, up a mountain or avoiding stock !

I don't feel the need to carry and never have, regardless of where I've travelled over this big, brown land.

I'm doing a big trip across the Simpson desert and then back down through the Flinders Ranges at the end of August/through September and won't even throw the .22 in to pot a bunny, just one less thing to worry about.
Humans hassling me will be the least of my concerns.

sent from a hand held thingy via magic invisible waves......

Thing is a lot of it could of been prevented if shooters stood up at the time. What I remember more then anything is how at the time that the shooters the laws had no effect on did not support others that were geting screwd and how the leading shooting body did as little as posable and to this day refuse to get involved in politics

Funnily enough there are numerous "laws of precedent" regarding home defense with firearms. There have been many cases of innocent people in fear of their life shooting intruders and none have been charged with murder. The written law and the reality in a courtroom are two different things. A number of years ago a young tosser in Queensland had a drug deal go wrong and picked the wrong house. He started yelling and kicking the front door in of a guy's home who proceeded to lay him out through the front door with a .270 Winchester. Drilled him through the chest - stone dead. He got off fine as he could genuinely show he was in fear of his life.
Outside of that though they could still charge you for improper storage of a firearm and/or ammunition but definitely not for murder unless the guy was shot in the back running from your home.

Your right there has been a few cases of crims shot or stabbed in home invasions but it would be just my luck if I planted some bloke with the 308 IDE be locked up for life hahaha
