Hi guys, sorry to crash in,just had to let off some steam
My wife is in hospital atm in wagga, its the biggest regional hospital in these parts and deal with anthing complicated from outlying areas as well as local patients, anyway she has become friendly with the lady in her room (late 60s id say).I was in there today and one thing lead to another and she mentioned the cost of heating in the winter. We cant afford to light the fire every day as wood is so expensive she tells us.It cost us $420.00 last year....a TONNE.I couldnt help myself and said are you sure or was that for the whole winter? with that her husband walked in and confirmed it was $420.00 a tonne. The wood guy is very freindly and always delivers when we want....i bet the arse#### does i thought.
How can people do that to the elderly who have no family around and dont know any better gets up my nose.
They are a great couple and even though they are an hour from me told them i will supply all there wood free for as long as im breathing.(didnt do that to be the "good guy") just hated them being ripped.Maybe i should give this "friendly wood man" a call while im at it.
Rant over!

Cheers Dave

good on ya i do a similar thing for my farther's mate here he is 78, he was getting ripped $240 a meter for stringy been doing now for 2 years

Matt, yeah the inbox was full, empty now. I may be able to get the China carb working, I'll wait until I finish porting the jug and try it. However, I do like the idea of going Zama as I can get various jets and metering springs for it. It may not matter if the China carb is in the ball park, I may be able to tweak the carb to where I want it.

For you information on those two jugs. Both jugs had the same offset on the position of the ports, however the black one was positioned 5 degrees higher, that put the exhaust at 163 duration and the intake at 142. The other jug was closer for bolt on running (153/152), but both jugs need some transfer work.

I'm reworking the black jug, leaving the exhaust stock, lowering the intake to 155 to start and raising the transfers (cutting the piston crown). I should end up with about 18 degrees of blowdown. It won't be a screamer, but should hold the revs in the cut when I finish.

You did a nice muffler mod on the saw, but I'll be drilling in from the sides to convert the two mounting tubes to outlets. That mod will help drop the backpressure some more (should help with the blowdown) and it doesn't increase the noise of the muffler.

I wish I could get some obviously Chinese bar (perhaps with Engrish writing) to go with the cheap Chinese chain. It would make a neat sleeper to annoy my Stihl and Husky mates.

Good one Dave - old folks need to be looked after. I am bit too far away to bring wood but if you want to set up a day to cut firewood, I can bring some saws and a helping hand. Just let me know.

You're right mate. My uncle's mother in law basically sat shivering in her couch under a rug nearly all winter because of firewood pricing in the Adelaide Hills (she was on a pension). When I heard about it I told my uncle he can bring his ute and trailer up and grab as much wood as she needs for nothing. Sad thing is she only just made it through the winter and passed away. There are a lot of older people suffering in silence that are too proud to say anything unlike the modern generation who always seem to want something for nothing and aren't afraid to whine about it at the drop of a hat. If some young guy was too lazy to work and in need of firewood he can get stuffed but I'd bend over backwards to help the elderly, they've done their time. I have a lot of respect for that generation and if only the younger generation on average had the same mentality we'd be in a lot better shape than we are now.

Thats a generous offer mate,i will keep it in mind.
After re reading my post,i realised i may have sounded like a big head (supplying there wood for free) thats not my go and should have left that bit out.But as my wife would say i have to tell the whole bloody story from start to finish:dizzy:
I just really came home cranky that this guy would rip them off to the point they sit in the cold half the winter.

Cheers Dave

Totally agree Matt, they are a tough generation that just get on with it.

Not at all Dave - definately didn't come across as a big head. Whenever I hear of people price gouging firewood I fire right up and would do exactly what you did, no problem at all.
Stupid thing is that there are pro firewood guys around our area hoping to drive the prices up in the Riverland to Adelaide Hills level. One meathead is even trying to convince consumers in the local paper that if you don't have a moisture testing setup to ensure "perfect timber moisture levels" you're really just a dodgey operator. I'd like to know how his 300 tonne capacity cigar humidifier is going to keep all his wood at the ideal moisture levels. Wanker...

It takes all types...ideal moisture levels come at a premium i guess, might need me one of those moisture meter thingywatits :ices_rofl:

$420 a ton? Electricity would be cheaper!

I was selling peppermint/stringy for $80.

I've seen oldies sitting under blankets because they can't afford heating. They can't bring natural gas here do to living on a rock, electricity for heating is too expensive and you aren't allowed to touch the abundance of firewood lying around.

Argh, but they can look after the influx of illegal immigrants better than our oldies! :dizzy:

Yes i have heard stories like that before, it makes genuine people in timber to be ashamed of the likes of him.
In my mill we have a lot of edgeing and docking waste, anyone who wants it for fire wood can have it, i would charge a bit for the loader fuel should someone want a large truck load but generaly nothing. someone getting a bit of wood is helping us get rid of the waste product and we have made our money from the sawn timber.

My raceing mate over armidale way allows a few armidale aboriginal elders to come on his farm every summer and cut fire wood from dead trees or fall downs for the aboriginal old people in town. Phil goes with them and helps and they get box trailer after trailer and ute loads and get it to town and i beleive no money changes hand. Phil says the same old fellows have been doing that for many, many years and phil says he can still get plenty for himself.

i have no time for men who take advantage of older people just because they can.

Most of the blokes in my area drop their prices for the pensioners, word gets around about the rogues in this area, them oldies do talk to each other. why charge them full price when you leave with a belly full of cakes and sweets?

I always say yes to the cup of tea but no the the biscuit (biscuits are not cheap when they are on a pension)

They usually make them and yeah there better than store bought, good to here all you blokes have the same morals, its no wonder we all get along,
Dave thats highly commendable mate ,that rip off needs to be brought out into the open, hell i supply my inlaws with fire wood cut and split all year round ,i just tell them to bring the trailer up when they visit(3hrs away)and if i visit them i take my trailer(7x5)draggin it arse out ,summer or winter

I was on the front veranda sitting in my new camp chair that I got for my birthday reading a book by tom clancy.

A Pat a neighbour asked me to have a look at a light they could not change for the old people (her aunty) that lived next door to them.

I said sure, went to the shed and got my tool bag,...........I was their for less than a minute and the ceiling rose was broken, I walked out and the aunty said was it that easy, yup it is broken, I can get you one tomorrow be about $2, .
Pat had asked me to look at asked if bunnings would have one I said it would for $5.
Pat offered to drive the old dear to bunnings and she asked if they went would I come back.
"Sure I'm doing nothing just reading a book".

I left my tools behind and went back to my book, Pete , Pats husband came over for a drink and while we were chatting I noticed his wife and the Aunty had come back from bunnings so I walked over Changed the ceiling rose installed the lamp shade and installed the new lamp.

It Uncle wanted to pay me, I said no, I do stuff for all of my neighbours.
He said well I will give you twenty dollars.
I told him I don't want your money.
If you want I will have a cup of black tea but I don't want your money, doing stuff is about being a comunity

Pat and Pete are 60ish and the uncle and Aunty are 80 odd.
