This is my first post on this site. I have been cutting wood since the mid 70's. I have used Mac, Jonsered, Husky, Stihl and Dolmar. Right now I am a Dolmar fan. I have tested a 5100 and a 5105 with a 3/8. 7 tooth and a 325. 7tooth and 325. 8 tooth on a 16" bar using new chain on each and the 325. 8 tooth was 1 to 1.5 seconds faster in 13" round log. The 5100/5105 has the torque to handle the 8 tooth and I just don't believe in stock form that a 346 would have a chance in that size wood. Hope to find out for sure someday.:cheers:

Tommie,

I really like and prefer the 346XP. It feels better in the hands and the throttle response is outstanding. However, the 5100 would satisfy all but the most discriminating user.

Now, it's been a long time since I've run the 260. But, I remember it as a great saw. Small, light, nimble, and reliable. I talk to the Christmas tree farmers every year, and that's all they use. They have a dozen or so 260s. Never fail, never a problem. They just go and go.

I do hereby submit that we shall call the 260, the PROSTITUTE! Why?

1) No respect. No one brags about it.
2) No johnny come lately. Always has been there, is there now, and always will be.
3) No foreplay, no pillow talk, just all business.
4) No expensive dinners to prime the pump, it's always ready.
5) Remember, Timex is the 260 of watches.

ole joat

Good point ole Joat. Ya know there is a old saying, speed and thrills are temporary. Just had a visit yesterday with the rep and we were talking numbers. He gave me some very interesting ones that tend to prove speed and thrills do little in the big scheme of things. Through 6/09 the entire market for handheld power equipment was down 6%. During this down market period Stihl sales were up 2%. Thats a 8% swing showing Stihl is outpeforming the market. So while those 5100's and 346's are zipping through the wood winning the little battle of thrills Stihl is winning the war..

Now I'm gonna go out in the shed and pacify them both and warn them, a new hot rod 50cc Stihl is in the works and they may both have to get out the shed before long,LOLOL

Ooooooh yea?.....Than why is it, that you said earlier Stihl is finally trying to catch up to the pack?.....With this so called 50cc killer. :ices_rofl:

PS.....Maybe cuz they're getting their 50cc arse kicked!....lol

Stihl sales are up around here because there rep cannot have any dealer around without having stihl in there store! Except me and another guy! Honestly do you need stihl dealers less than a mile apart? On the flip side I am not seeing it as far as trimmers on the commercial trailers! Saws maybe in full force but I am happy with what I am doing!

J,

Is this some lame attempt at humor? Too many Stihl dealers! Oh, the shame.

ole joat

No it is not! a town of 100,000 and you have 16 dealers! Honestly way too many! And I forgot to include the john deere guys!

Nothing will die.

When will the stream be aweary of flowing
Under my eye?
When will the wind be aweary of blowing
Over the sky?
When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting?
When will the heart be aweary of beating?
And nature die?
Never, oh! never, nothing will die;
The stream flows,
The wind blows,
The cloud fleets,
The heart beats,
Nothing will die.

Nothing will die;
All things will change
Thro' eternity.
'Tis the world's winter;
Autumn and summer
Are gone long ago;
Earth is dry to the centre,
But spring, a new comer,
A spring rich and strange,
Shall make the winds blow
Round and round,
Thro' and thro',
Here and there,
Till the air
And the ground
Shall be fill'd with life anew.

The world was never made;
It will change, but it will not fade.
So let the wind range;
For even and morn
Ever will be
Thro' eternity.
Nothing was born;
Nothing will die;
All things will change.

All things will change except brand biases and the never ending 50cc debate.

This thread almost sounds like the old Ford VS Chevy arguments,but we all know who wins there...

Sure, but Husky will always win this one!

How they perform in use where a 4.5hp+ 60cc saw is the right "medisine" is totally irrelevant - the both fall on their face vs. the MS361 etc in most wood that a 16" bar doesn't reach trough - earlier in some wood, I am sure......:givebeer:

As THALL said, such cutting isn't the intended use of a 50cc saw!

Exactly!

Btw, I never said the 5100 is a bad saw, rather the opposite - it just isn't the best 50cc saw around, as some AS members still prefere to believe.......:pumpkin2:

Handling/weight (feels like a brick for anything but bucking), trigger responce, and to a degree the air filtration are the weak points.

There has been lots of reports on premature engine failiures as well, but I still believe that is a dealer issue (lack of readjustment, handing them out with the EPA-imposed factory settings), and not a design issue .....:angel:

That is just your opinion.

I'm not so sure about this. I think that the vast majority of fire wood cutters(not on this site) will have a 50cc saw as their only saw.:popcorn::popcorn:

As some have pointed out If you only need a limbing saw a Poulan NE Wildthing will fit the bill at $80.00 refurbished.......

Or a dolly 420 for a little more!:cheers:
