What's your opinion on the Stihl flippy caps

I just looked at the "yes" and "no" voters. The "no" voters aren't stihl fans, not one of them has "stihl" in their user name. I think that they hate stihl in general.

I voted against the flippy caps and own 3 stihl's, 1 with the old screw style and 2 with the flippy caps. I will state again that I do not like the flippy. I have NEVER had any problem with the screw type caps and have NEVER needed a wrench to loosen one, NEVER had to replace one of the screw syle caps, (2 flippy's have broken so far), and have NEVER run gas or bar oil down my pant leg like I HAVE several times with the flippy's.

I bought 3 new saws this fall, none of them stihl, mainly because of the friggin stinkin lousy flippy caps. It is not a question of if they will break but when. Most likely at an inopertune time. Now if Stihl offered them as an OPTION, maybe there would be new stihl saws with screw style caps in my garage instead of the dolmar and makitas.

Just for reference, I complained to the dealer about the caps the last time I had to buy one. He said he gets LOTS of complaints about the flippy caps.

I've said it before, I'll say it again; If you can't work out the flippy-caps, you have no business running a saw.
I have been running saws professionally for 25 years fatguy but when I see a turd it is in fact a turd.<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&lpver=3&ref=11" target="_blank"><img src="http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/000203F2.gif" border="0" title="Click to get more." ></a>

:agree2::agree2::agree2::agree2: cant tell you how many times they dumped oil and got it in the bucket and on soles of boots caused problems and make you slip cant tell you how many times i had to wait to get one by ordering and spending money on broken caps or lost caps they are stupid because they are only made for dummys who cant open reg caps

Your right Rope, I had a terrible time taking that cap off that saw and putting it back on, why hell it took me a nana second, terrible,LOLOL

Sorry Fatguy, but I and I am sure many others take offense to such a statement. I have owned and been running saws since 1976, bought my first stihl in 1983. I used to work as a field service engineer. I am a pretty fair mechanic and fabricator. The FACT that flippy caps SUCK have absolutely nothing to do with my ability to run a chain saw.

Was surprised to see this come up again as a live thread in my user CP.

Seeing as though a majority of folks here like the caps, I have no choice but to conclude that I was wrong - and that they are awesome and far surpass aspirin, the Panzer, and the Autobahn as the apex of German engineering excellence.

The internet was right and I was wrong. Just another example of all the minds that get changed inside of internet forums.

Couple of observations. Since this discussion is still going on, it must mean that

1) We are so grumpy we will argue about anything.

or

2) Things in this country are sooooo rainbows, lollipops and smiley faces that it's only the little things that can get us all riled up since there are no other gripes to speak of.

...Hey, wait! Wasn't this thread started by a foreigner?! Is this some sort of attempt to foment discontent in an early stage of a 5th column movement.

Just a matter of time until Belgian armor's rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue I 'spect. I hope tham Walloons will make for kind overlords and be generous with the waffles. How do you say 'flippy caps rule' in Flemish?

i'm a "no" vote. stihl is in my sig. it was my first good saw and am still running it 20 years later.

i'll not ever buy one with a flippy cap...i'm no pro and i don't foresee every being "forced" into buying a flipper when there are so many other fine saws out there.

flippers are for home0owners and idiot engineers' egos--who'll probably get a nobel peace prize for the design because they linked it to global warming.:monkey:

And I am the current steward of a goodly number of saws, every single one of them a Stihl.

And I do not like the little flippy caps. It is hard to keep sawdust out of the oil tank, and it can be difficult to get the caps back on correctly, despite THALL's video, because under real sawing conditins, it is easy to forget which direction the little tab was pointed when it was removed, and if the tank is filled to the top, there is not enough room to get the durn thing in there. I do like the fact that once they are correctly installed, they will not loosen on their own.

It takes a teacherman to teach Mr Hall that his little vid is no good....in real life things are a bit different indeed. Now the procedure is my little vid will work all the time in all circumstances...:givebeer:

Stihl dealers these days! I hate to point this out to you but you put fuel in the saw when it on its side (horizontal not vertical). Oh wait, that was an ms361, let me guess, it runs on hot air! Seroiusly, if you want to make a video extolling the virtues of the flippy cap do a timed run on an ms200T mix and oil please. That should show all how great these caps really are. Thank you in advance for your time.

A foreigner....naaaaah, ..."a universal pot stirrer" would be more like it....LOLOL. And it's easy to get them americans on their horse....LOLOL.:hmm3grin2orange:

This thread is not really about the flippy cap, but more about seeing a design that has it obvious flaws, and most of the stihlheads keep dancing around like wild indians and call it the holy grail, while it's not. And I like Stihl saws.

In flemish it would go something like this : "de gereedschapsloze tankdop van Stihl is een nutteloze ontwikkeling " :)

Oh, one more thing....

The little saws have a smaller version of this little mechanical boondoggle. TH MS192T in particular has a really finicky oil cap.

I wish there were some way of cleaning wood debris out of the recess prior to removing the cap, but short of a portable parts washer, or a bag of Q-tips being part of one's woods pack, I dunno.

Olie: "Hey Sven, you got Q-tips in yer pack there, right next to yer scrench and the spare flippy caps. What gives? Gotta fetish about keepin' yer ears clean?"

Sven: "I'm a lumberjack an' I'm OK........." :greenchainsaw:
