Why Chainsaws?

Many Uses

There's just something about feeling the power of a good running saw in you hands. It is truly a simple yet amazing invention. And think about all the applications - tree pruning, tree removal, firewood, lumbermill, timberframing, rescue work, carving, not to mention collecting. Now there's an idea - chainsaw trading cards! I can hear it now, "I got a '56 Mall GP rookie I'll trade for that Landcaster 200 "Nifty".

I got bored at the putty knife forum.

Gasman, you crack me up. That's the best line I've seen in a while!

For me I enjoy chainsaws because cutting a tree down and cutting it up provides instant feedback to accomplished work. I love my day job, but most of my projects take several years to complete. With a chainsaw, a tree is standing up one minute, on the ground the next, and in a pieces in an hour. Then I can enjoy the aftermath through the winter.

Gotta love em... Power, speed and sound! And the best part is that the time spent with em is productive usually.

I've heated with wood for over 20 years now and I've always owned chainsaws but they were just another tool to me. I have a buddy that likes fooling with old saws, he had an old Husky 61 that needed an overhaul and he asked me to help him rebuild it. We found this site and I'm learning a lot!

I've raced hare scrambles & motocross all my life and I've always enjoyed restoring vintage dirt bikes (I'll post some pics sometime) but the cost has gone through the roof and I've sold off all my old vintage bikes. Now my chainsaw addiction has 'kinda replaced my vintage bike addiction, it's a whole lot cheaper but getting vintage saw parts is a very frustrating nightmare to me! It is much easier to find vintage bike parts.

Anyway, I'm here to stay ! ! ! Matt

Cars and trucks to big and expensive.
Riding mowers and tractors still to big and expensive.
Boats are better on water, I am better off water.
Motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters are hard to put on a shelf and still quite expensive. Also, not big into leather or neon.
Guns, well I could collect guns. Are they expensive?
Animals poop.
R/C products might require me to talk to R/C people.
Airplanes involve airplane people, the government, are big and expensive.
That is a quadruple whammy.

Saws are great. They are small, simple, direct machines with a large amount of variety and history.

And that is different from a car how?

well i dont have to attach a car to my self and drag it around a tree or carry it around a wood all day breathing in its crappy fumes from an exaust usually no more 2 foot max away.
I like my pro saws but its a love hate relationship and i love my job but some times after a 9 hour day with no breeze to carry the exaust fumes away it sucks on the other hand doing the job well with a saw that rips and is a pleasure to use ........is good!

Nice comparsions! I couldn't agree more. And don't forget, chainsaws have a very high weight-to-potential-destructive force ratio next to dynamite - and their legal to own.

It's illegal to own dynamite? Aw crap!

I got run out of there after I got a green and purple putty knife at Walmart. They said I should have gotten an orange one at the putty knife dealer, but there aren't any putty knife dealers near me!

Have you tried full synthetic oil like 2T? The difference in stink factor is dramatic. Stihl Ultra seems pretty good too. I could never go back.

Those Walmart putty knives are pure cr@p man. No wonder you got runofft. I'm sorry you wasted your $1.99, you could have spent 4 bucks on the good one and it would have lasted you for a lifetime. Just try to get someone to service that purple and green piece of junk for you.

Said just like a Bikeputtyknife guy. Sheesh,... just because the guy only wants to spend $1.99 on a putty knife doesn't mean people have to run him off. Some guys just don't need or want that high dollar, brand name putty knife. :deadhorse: :deadhorse:

A downed tree can't fall on someones head

cut wood to heat home . Amazing how much wood can be got for free and some good old fasioned labor. And its fun.

Well, I'm not a pro putty knife user although I was tempted to do the blade angle mod. I was also happy with the plastic handle, while those lunatics were bragging about the magnesium handles on theirs. Plus they wanted me to adopt the "three knife plan" to cover all the bases when all I need is a 2" knife as a weekend user. Buncha freaks I tell ya!
