Woods saw / Race Saw, what's the dif

Is it really supposed to be honest? That would spoil it for some people. Take the fun right out of it. Trying to bend the rules takes place in every form of competition. I think that the definition or expectation of what is a woods saw has changed in the last few years at least here on AS. Sometimes you have to set rules or definitions or competition becomes meaningless.
To me a good useable woods saw should be able to have any of its parts, and in any combination, replaced by stock items and still be no less powerful or useable than a stock saw. I have the suspicion that that has gone by the wayside. Still people want to "win" so that drives the process.

It's definately a gray area, but what both have in common is that everyone wants to bring their best saw for the class.
Just being able to enter is where the fun is, and that is where we learn, right at the chopping block.
For example, if Brian beats my stock 066 by 3 secs. with his piped 066, shouldn't that inspire me to pipe my 066 or make a better chain?
It's supposed to be about having fun first and foremost, and if we want to take it real serious, don't we go to Webster or Minden, or Kapuskasing?
Obviously certain rules should apply at these GTG's or there will be no order whatsoever.
I think the main problem is that the amatuers don't want to race against the big guns and the big guns shouldn't want to take unfair advantage of us girl scouts.:chainsaw:
It's an awkward situation, but we need the pro's or we don't learn anything and the pro's need us greenhorns.
It's more about managing the people than it is about managing the saws.
I would like to see more races in the East where one cut is made in big wood like 20 -36" pine or cottonwood. Now that would be fun!
At which point does a worksaw become a racesaw? Well, that's as difficult to answer as which point do you become a pro?
In other words, Helsels Echo bucket saw I built for him is probably considered a racesaw to 99% of the hack and stack crowd that he associates with, and why wouldn't it?:dizzy:

Jeff arnt you going to have a big block of maple that would give gypo the big wood fix he is looking for, think I have a square ground 32" loop I could put on the 066 that I could give it a go with.

For the GTGs, where there's no prize money, then if someone wins with a cheater saw, what are they really gaining when deep down inside they know they cheated and have to suffer with that guilt 24 hours a day, every day, for the rest of their miserable life. Eventually the truth will come out and that person will be shunned, ridiculed and perhaps they won't get any ribs to eat after the event.

T-wolf...A local racer is showing with 2 bike saws,I think 12" won't fit the bill.As for big wood,Ed and I cruised and found 96" circumference sugar maple. My woods is full of big maple. The fence lines contain 20 ish basswood and the swamp has 12/16" red maple.I have access to larger red maple in neighbors property. Also plenty of 12/14" white ash.Pick your poison!!Ed was concerned about the big wood b/c he didn't know who had long bars and big chain. Also smaller wood available. How about 6" ironwood.Or 10" smoothbark hickory.Ed may also bring Hemlock from up north, problem being 3 feet of snow.Ed is going to contact everyone soon.If you want to do the bigwood let him know.

Iron wood, that will test the chain, I cut neary half my fire wood in iron wood, dries quick, lots of heat, and just takes up space in the bush.

Looking forward to it!

Bob, are you suggesting that conscience is any great deterrent to some people?:)

For some it might well manifest it's self as pride in knowing they got away with one.

Almost like the big pro sports the real game is not getting caught using steroids or other PE drugs.

John did I just sense/see a little crack in the shell,a little ***** in the armour, a tennie tiny ray of.......humility.Its next Saturday. Why don't you see if you,WJ,and rik Helsel can get together and make a road tour.PM your intentions.I think it's safe to say, with the goings on in the last month or so, please bring a full quiver of saws and NO excuses.Since their's a possibility of running big wood PLEASE bring all your big west coast gear. The list of wood to cut is above, make your chain accordingly.Any special requests in wood let me know.John I would also love to run the saw you built.Maybe you'll be getting my next 200$.PS.Rik Helsel I saw in my backyard, kftree run his 088 on muffler and on pipe in the same log and the difference is measureable.jeff

I don't know if Ed can cook or not, maybe we can trick him.Dennis,it's kind of Ed's show if you know what I mean.Since I don't race it's all just firewood, big or small.I think it was you Dennis in a now unretrieveable thread that stated "the bigger the wood the better".The big wood show Dennis,is at my request.A couple of bikes are showing up Dennis.Look I said Dennis 6 times.Relax Dennis.(7x).Dennis I'm not trying to discredit west coast guys in any way.The size of the trees you guys fall, and the terrain would make me run .East coast wood may not be as big but way "stiffer". What I am saying Dennis its a different beast.I would also like to point out SOME of the best saws in the world originate from Ontario and Quebec ,give credit where credit is due.Competetions in middle and eastern US has proven that.See Remi Gagnon,Gaston Dupuis(sp) or a fellow by the name of Marcel Vincent.I'll leave the other guy out of it.Proof????,pm district attorney Arden Cogar Jr.Dennis just for kicks and giggles I would love to see your chain in hardwood!!As for being wrong Dennis I'm married,I'm wrong 14x a week which makes me good at it. If you win name your bottle i'll have it delivered.Within reason. Dennis.(12x) Jeff(1x)

Gypo I know nothing about how chainsaw competition races work, but I would think one becomes a pro, If you have ever accepted cash money as a prize for winning any form of competition that you are participating in. In most forms of competion there are pro classes and amateur classes. You are considered an amateur as long as you accept trophies, but once you take money you are considered a pro and then no longer aloud to compete as a amateur.

Hi Jeff, it would be nice if I were in the same place and time as you are now, however, I've been there and done that.
I can't share in your enthusiasm though for your well meaning GTG as it is only one more Ed Heard recruitment for cheerleaders so that he can sell saws.
Ed had a prominent position here on AS and had a monopoly as a saw builder as he built a very good woodsaw. What more could a sponsor want?
Unfortuneately, Ed told too many lies that got him into the bind he is in now.
He wimped out of AS, not because of what anyone said or did to him, he did himself in because he wouldn't and couldn't face up to the BS posts he made.
Where are his chearleaders KF Cull, Joketurd?
They got their azz kicked because they got sucked into Ed's reign of BS. Ed had them convinced they were TimberSports material. Hahaha.Punched out saws and whatever it takes to win a woodsaw race.
Learn what you can Jeff, but don't get led down the garden path by Ed.
Your impressionable and that's the kind of person Ed needs. Just like I once was.
Say what you want, but where is Ed and his cheerleaders? Shat in their own nest big time!
Warning: Don't be a Head Turd cheerleader.
Hahaha

So, I'm the only woodtick that wants to fight tonight?:chainsaw:
