Stopped at a yard sale on the way home from work today and left with a mint condition Stihl 038 Super Pro with a 24" bar.I've never owned a Stihl so I'm hoping someone can tell me if this saw can pull a 24 incher.Would also like to know what size and horse power it might be. Any replies and comments would be welcome. The saw cost me a hundred bucks, hope it wasn't wasted. Thanks, Big Dan.

good saw. heavy, and powerful. will pull a 24" fine. used them for years. actually 1/2 azzed looking for another one for fun, but no big hurry.

038

Keep the chain sharp, and It'll pull a 24 fine. Full skip would probably be better with that saw. But my buddy got one with a 24 and he uses it all the time.:D ;)

038SUPER, one helluva work horse saw there. Built solid, lots of torque and will pull a 24 inch bar with ease. It runs like the saws of yester year, not a screaming high reving saw but a saw that runs strong and cuts damn good. On par with a 044 without all the nosie and screaming. Got to get me one of those for the collection. Great find on your part.

The 038,038 super and 038 mag II are beyond a doubt about the best Stihl ever made. They rate right up there with an 066,in reliabilty ,power per size etc. Many, for example, prefer the 038 mag II to an 044.

I agree nice find at a great price. There are three different 038's in case you wanted to know. The 038 AV, 038 Super, and the 038 mag. Your 038 Super is right in between the AV and Mag in displacement and was the 2nd generation of 038's to come out. Its a lot more desirable then an 038 AV.

Anybody looking for a 038 Mag project saw?

I know a fellow "local" AS member who has a 038 Mag project thats for sale (last I talked to him). He might have it sitting around still. The saw needed a new piston, everything else was good to go.

I picked up a 038 super about a month ago and finally had a chance to really put it work last weekend. Cut about 5 pick-up loads with it. It has a 20" bar on it and it really cut well. I had some 25" cherry to cut and it did not slow down at all. I also had some 20" oak and again it didn't even slow down. I am impressed with this saw. I just bought a 25" bar for it.

Being that this is an older saw, does anyone know if it would benefit from a muffler mod??
