Question about M-D 211

I have been offered a Mercury Disston 211A that looks good, and has been stored properly for 300.00. Has some extra parts, too. The owner won't come off the price, but I've tried negotiating. As y'all know, if it ain't running when you get it, chances are good that you will have to sink a fair amount of unexpected cash into it to make it run. I was impressed with the fairly "new" looking chain that must have been added before the saw was put up. Fuel was emptied prior to storage. I offered a max of 250.00 for it. I already have a 211 that Igpoe is working on for me, but that one isn't quite as nice as this one, at least appearance-wise. Decisions, decisions....:dizzy:

improvement

Swapped bad carb for a good one today and it's much better. Stiil some fine tuning to do with the bar and chain on. I'm hoping it will be strong in the cut but there's no second man here. I find that 2 mans cannot be tuned properly unless they're in the cut. Joe, what you think?
Igpoe:cheers:

Mr IGPOE, I didnt know you could tune any of them at all. Besides the DA-211

:D
But best to have them in the wood, and a good ear that knows what to listen for helps as well.

Considering the almost new chain is worth in excess of a C note and you can always get the money back on the bay...................

I have to agree with you my friend. They sound good sitting on the ground and then when you put it in the wood you got a whole different sound to worry with. We tried to cut some hard wood with ours and I don't know if it was the worn out chain or what but it didn't do to good. I love that DA-211 the sound of it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

I'm being "conservative"....

I'm going to put it to you upfront. If you don't want it pick it up and I'll give you the money back when we come up to your GTG. I'll buy it sight unseen and not think twice about it. The one I got came from Sullfolk VA. and I bought it
form looking at a picture of it and what he told me about it. I'll do it again too.

Thanks, Igpoe!

Glad to hear that you got the 211 running! Looking forward to that...

what is wrong with yours, missing or broken?

Sawbones the whole front part where the bar mounts to is broken. Came from family of travel sawmillers and they made it work and I guess it did but man it looks bad. They put a little Mac bar of some kind on it. I can deal with the bar issue later but we got to have some way to mount it other than the way it is now.

The saw is complete and is in good shape for the age and I'd like to get it back in good condition cause it came from my family.
Thanks,
Joe

I was holding a 6 tranny today and noticed the bevel gear has some rust on it now.

housing looks good though.

the bar mount and helper ends on those saws were a poor design. see alot of broken and repaired ones.

notice the last pic on this current sale. they tightend the plate down to wear it is almost ready to crack it off.

Mercury 2 Man Chainsaw KB7 AY, 1947, NoResv - eBay (item 330537116483 end time Mar-06-11 19:10:55 PST)

many of these are broke off but as long as you keep the broken part as a spacer it will hold but wouldnt want to run a real long bar.

will take some pics of that trans tomarrow.

Nice eye on that Ric. I thought I had pics of this "rig" but guess I dont.

This one has a Mac hardnose bar highly modified to fit the KB6. Tail slot on the helper handle. and 3-4 holes drilled in the nose end on the transmission. Then 3 bolts that holds it on. Ill get some pics up.

For you Disston KB series guru's:

Have you ever successfully removed a fuel filter from the tank? I have the two bolts out but she dosent want to budge. Is there a trick to it?
