Another not so good stihl jug

The best saw on the planet (ps-7900) has a Mahle cylinder.

Brad...was this Mahle cylinder ordered from a dealer as a replacement...or what is the story?

I bought it off eBay, so I don't know. What do you think about it?

maybe the fine folks at stihl think they are helping the pro porters on this site
when the rough ports in these saws are opened and cleaned the gains will be larger and more people will want to have their saws ported
the pro porters get more business and it costs stihl less so everybody is happy right?

I'm not suggesting there is with this one. I was just showing a new Mahle 460 cylinder for comparison.

I'm no expert at all....but the pics are quite obvious....even if I didn't want to mod it,I would expect to see better quality..heck, we're in the 21st century now ain't we?

It's a lot better than the first one. I have seen better though. I wouldn't complain about this one.

Agree, seen some smoother than that Mahle, but at least the edges of the ports are clean without too much dissymetry and there are few significant flaws.

What made you take that 460 apart in the 1st place Timber?

Lots of times saws get pulled down and reworked before I ever run them.

Saw is going to become a racer, really don't care about the bore anyway, going to cut the head off, bore it out and have it replated with Nikasil anyway.

I was under the impression the lighter colored cylinders were nikasil, & the darker grey colored cylinders were chrome plated.

I did a side by side. The nikasil has more of a reddish tint to it.

So to you modders....are you gonna still work with these shotty cylinders? If they can't hold up well, what are you gonna do? I don't want to see you guys get a bad name because the cylinder was the true fault.

These pictures are of a couple proto-types I had at my desk here in Laytonville. 1 is a chrome bore for a Husqvarna 51/55. The other is a BBN 395 with the nikasil bore.
